I’ll never forget my first encounter with Becky shortly after she and Aaron took over the store.

I was the advisor for the Police Explorers, and I nervously approached her about hosting a food drive outside their business. Without hesitation, Becky’s face lit up with enthusiasm.

“Absolutely!” she exclaimed, handing me her business card. “Call me anytime – My husband and I absolutely want to help this this community.” Those were her words. And I think since then, she and her husband have proven very true to their word.

They don’t just contribute with money, they take their hands to the wheel and become involved.

It is not uncommon to see Becky and Aaron organizing toys for the Toys for Tots drive or volunteering their time through another non-profit or organization that they have joined.

Their passion is infectious and they’re a motivator for their employees as well as their customers. Of course, running the Grocery Outlet, for the Weigel’s, is not just about the groceries – it’s about feeding the community in every sense of the word.

From that first “absolutely” to today, Becky and Aaron have proven themselves not only to be entrepreneurs, but community leaders as well. They are so committed to Susanville; they’ve redefined what it means to be a local entrepreneur and know success is not about making money but making a difference in your neighbors’ lives.

Thank you both for having such a heart for service – you both are two of the reasons I love where we live.

Arlan and Wanda Mallery were chosen for the Hall of Fame because of their participation and continued support of the 4-H program for over fifty years. From participating and leading to supporting the 4-H Junior Livestock Auction and being Platinum sponsors.

Arlan was a 4-H member from 1949-1958. He was a member in both the sheep and beef projects. His favorite memory of 4-H was the summer camps. He said he would have to earn $12 to go to camp for an entire five days at Lake Tahoe.

Wanda was not a 4-H member; however, she was the Johnstonville leader for fifteen years as her four kids went through the program. She loved being involved in her kids’ lives and loved doing things with them and their friends. She was the club leader and also led the sheep, sewing, cooking, and arts and crafts projects.

Arlan believes that 4-H is a great way to get involved in your community. It teaches kids how to be responsible and helps kids to make lifelong friendships with other 4-H’ers.

When asked why kids should join 4-H, Arlan said that it is a great way to get involved in the community, it teaches kids to be responsible, and you can make lifelong friendships with fellow 4-Hers.

In 2023 Arlan and Wanda were awarded the honor of being the Lassen County Fair Grand Marshalls and led the fair parade down Main Street Susanville.

Arlan and Wanda are so very deserving of the Hall of Fame recognition. It has been a true honor having their support all these years in our 4-H Program.

It’s an honor, Arlan, to induct you and Wanda as our second members into the Lassen County 4-H Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

The Center for Disease Control recommends that everyone age 6-months and older get the flu vaccine each year. Seasonal flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It spreads between people and can cause mild to severe illness. In some severe cases, the flu can lead to death. In the United States, flu season occurs in the fall and winter and usually peaks in January or February.

Some flu related complications include pneumonia and dehydration. Certain groups are more likely to experience these complications including seniors, children and people with chronic health conditions. Therefore, it is important to take preventative measures to avoid the flu.

You can defeat the flu by getting vaccinated and washing your hands. It is important to stay home if you do become sick to help your body recover and to prevent infecting others.

The First Aid course will train participants in first aid basics for the most common type of emergencies, including how to recognize them, how to call for help and how to perform lifesaving skills.

Students will receive an AHA Heartsaver CPR First Aid card upon successful completion of the class which begins at 8:30a.m. The class, which includes hands-on skills, can take up to four hours depending on class size. The cost of the course is $28 per student.

It is intended for the general public and will not meet professional rescuer requirements.

Archery Meet Held in Susanville

October 9, 1940

The annual meeting of the Archery Division of the Lassen Game Conservation League was held at Susanville Fair grounds in Susanville last Sunday.

A large crowd of archers assembled, and twenty men and ten women entered the contests. There were members of archery clubs from Lakeview, Oregon; Reno, Nevada, besides those from Alturas, Redding, Red Bluff and Susanville.

Three archers attended from Greenville. They were Fred Christie, L. P. Hanley and Mrs. L. P. Hanley. Organization of a club for Greenville is planned as soon as there are enough archers to form an organization.

The Susanville meet was in charge of H. Hill of Susanville.

The contests started at 10 a.m.. with a clout shoot at 100 yards for ladies and 180 yards for men, each shooting 24 arrows. High score of 79 points was made by Mr. Seahorn of Susanville. Mr. Seahorn was using a 35 pound yew wood bow. Mrs. L. Lack of Redding made high score in the ladies division.

The running deer shoot was the next event. A dummy deer was made up of burlap sacks packed with hay and attached to pulleys on a tight wire and pulled back and forth across the field at about the speed of a running deer. Each archer shot as many arrows as he or she should from 50 yards while the imitation deer scampered across the field 12 times.

This was a very difficult undertaking, and the misses were many. High score of three points was made by Mr. Daniels of Redding. Ladies high, Mrs. Lack of Redding.

The third event was the American round, which was commenced immediately after lunch was served by the Susanville archers. In the American round, men were grouped into three different groups, A., B and C. In accordance with their past shooting record. The ladies were entered all in one group. The men started with 30 arrows from 60 yards, 30 arrows from 50 yards, and 30 arrows from 40 yards. Ladies commencing at 50 yards, then 40 yards, and then 30 yards.

The fourth event was 30 arrows at a standard 48 inch target from 100 yards. High score was made by Mr. Seahorn of Susanville.

The fifth and last event was a 24 inch swinging target, everyone shooting 18 arrows from 40 yards.

In order to stimulate interest in the sport of archery and with an aim towards helping those with low scores, a prize for low score was awarded both low man and low lady, consisting of a beautiful book of complete instructions on archery.
