The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

Homecoming week at Lassen High School will be celebrated the week of September 22-27. Our ASB class has been working since summer to come up with a theme, dress up days, and other activities.

Here are some of the details: The Game of Lassen will be played during this week as students compete in spirit days, lunchtime contests, and the annual Powder Puff game, culminating with the Homecoming float and skit battle.

Monday’s theme is “Guess Who”, the childhood matching card game. Students are encouraged to dress alike and take a picture for proof.

The theme for Tuesday 9/24 is “White Lies”, where students are encouraged to wear a plain white t-shirt with a white lie written on it. White lies are those little things you say when you’re not telling the whole truth, like “No, that dress doesn’t look bad on you” or “We love mandatory training on blood borne pathogens”.

On Wednesdays, students will embrace The Game of Life and come as their future selves. Careers like law enforcement, nurses, teachers, and doctors are bound to be popular. Pilots, bakers, engineers, plumbers, chefs, and construction workers are also good choices. You might also envision your future as a BBQ dad or Soccer Mom.

Juniors and Sophomores will battle Seniors and Freshmen at the Powder Puff game on Wednesday evening at 7:00. We are working on getting food trucks there so you can purchase dinner or snacks.

Thursday is a class color day centered around the popular card game UNO. Freshmen wear green, Sophomores are yellow, Juniors have red, and Seniors are blue. Students should wear as much as the color as possible.

Since Friday is a county-wide In-Service day for educators, the assembly and parade will take place that afternoon on the track. Our royalty will be introduced, as well as the prestigious Alumni of the Year, and classes will present their floats.

We’ll do that all again on Friday when the Grizzlies take on the Foothill Cougars with game times at 3:30, 5:30, and 7:30. The student section theme is inspired by Monopoly and students should plan on collecting the “Go Directly to Jail” card and dress in orange or stripes.

Saturday night is the Homecoming dance hosted by the Sophomore Class. It will be held at the Vets Hall.

The ASB students want to add events that would encourage alumni to attend the festivities on Friday night. If you have any ideas, please drop me an email.

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

An Important Message from the

Lassen County Animal Shelter

by Jamie Proia, Kennel Technician

It’s been nearly two years since we at the Lassen County Animal Shelter made our last public announcement detailing the heavy burden placed on staff to make decisions regarding euthanizing for space.

Unfortunately, we must once again reach out in an effort to educate and inform Lassen County residents about this practice and why it is sadly very much still in effect.

animalshelterdog-620x525 image

Owner surrenders are still skyrocketing. We receive many calls every day from members of the public who wish to surrender dogs, cats, or even litters of puppies and kittens to the shelter. In 2023, the Lassen County Animal Shelter took in 245 owner surrenders. As of the end of August 2024, there have already been 208 owner surrenders and we are on track to surpass the previous year’s numbers without difficulty.

A waiting list to surrender pets to the shelter has been in use, which consists of a person providing information about their animals and leaving their number so that staff can call in their pets at a later date when space is available. This is done to give animals already in the shelter a chance at adoption or transfer to a rescue partner, rather than simply euthanizing them to make immediate space available.

Additionally, dumping these poor family pets at our doorstep in boxes/crates or tying them to poles at night so that by the time staff returns to work the next morning they are panicked and tangled is heartbreaking to witness. This type of dumping after hours puts a major strain on the shelter and its staff, further forcing our hands to euthanize for space in order to fit the new arrivals into the shelter, while also pushing people patiently waiting on the list further back. We can understand someone’s frustration about not being able to surrender a pet right away, but that inconvenience is keeping one of the animals already housed in our shelter alive that much longer. Please understand that we are doing all we can to save as many animals as possible.

Furthermore, once you’ve been called back and surrender your pet to the shelter, be aware that if we cannot find a new home or a rescue to pull your pet from our facility in a reasonable amount of time, it may be euthanized in order to make room for the next animal in need; we can no longer house animals indefinitely while they wait for the perfect family to adopt them. This is not a localized issue but a worldwide one. It’s something we share in common with our many rescue and shelter partners who are also all full and are no longer able to pull from our facility with the regularity of previous years.

Should you find yourself in a position that requires you to rehome a family pet, please attempt to find a new suitable home for your furry family member on your own first. There are currently over 100 people waiting to surrender dogs and 40 waiting to surrender cats to the shelter.

Here are a few options staff recommends you use before surrendering your animal to the shelter:

Advertise your pet on Swap Shop, a wonderful local radio program that runs Monday – Saturday, 8:00 to 9:00a.m. at 1.530.257.8255.

Utilize social media to get your pet’s photos and bio out for many people to see. There are quite a few local FB groups that would be perfect to advertise your pet on.

The Lassen Humane Society offers rehoming assistance. Simply email a picture/bio of your pet, along with your contact information to lassenhumanesociety@yahoo.com. They will do a courtesy posting of your pet on Petfinder.com.

Despite the dire situation we’ve found ourselves in, the Lassen County Animal Shelter closed out the 2023 year with an 85 percent save rate. ‘Save rate’ is the percentage of animals that leave the shelter through adoption, return to owner, or transfers to rescue partners. We hope 2024 yields similar or even better numbers as we push through difficult times.

Staff is available to answer questions/concerns during normal business hours. Monday through Friday from 9:00a.m. until 3:00p.m. at 1.530.257.9200. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

You’ve Been Ghosted! Lassen Family Services Holding Annual Fundraiser

If you see some haunted front lawns around town in October, don’t be frighted! Lassen Family Services, all next month, will be placing little ghosts into Susanville yards as part of their “Ghosted” fundraiser.

Money raised by the fun, community event allows LFS to continue providing services to survivors of violence in our community.

Here’s how it works – if ghosts are placed in your yard, you will receive a form taped to your door explaining how you can ‘ghost’ another lawn.

ghosted image

You can place your ghosting order after September 16th and little ghosts will start appearing around town October 1st.

The flyer from LFS points out that ghosting is “done in good spirits and is not meant to be offensive in any way.”

“These ghosts will rest in peace on a lawn for twenty-four hours until the mysteriously cross over to another person’s lawn.”

If you wake up to find that you have been ghosted, and you would like to pick where the ghosts will haunt next, LFS asks for a small donation of $20.

Even if you haven’t been ghosted yet, you can ghost someone else for just $20. For more information call 1.530.257.4599.

At the Lucky Land of Lassen Harvest Festival in uptown Susanville, 1914

Susanville to have Big Harvest Festival

September 10, 1914

A Harvest Festival will be held in Susanville, commencing on September 9th and covering a period of four days, in which Lassen County will take part. Plans are extensive and every form of entertainment will be in action to please the public.

It has just been decided that a Queen of the Harvest Festival to preside over the affairs of the week will be chosen by votes. This has proved to be an interesting decision and will add much interest to the Festival, as the four girls named to contest for queen are popular and pretty.

The contestants are Miss Bernys Martin, Miss Winnie Enhorning, Miss Katherine Bradley of Susanville and Miss Bertha Johnson of Westwood.
