Cancer Advocacy Group’s Fundraising Golf Tournament Big Success
A SusanvilleStuff Photofeature
by Mikalah Gray
The 12th annual Northern California Cancer Advocates golf tournament is being called a big success by organizers who held their annual fundraiser at the Diamond Mountain Golf Course August 31st, raising money for Cancer Fighters in Lassen and Plumas counties.
With 144 golfers and a whole host of folks who came out to the clubhouse for lunch and the raffle, the NCCA raised an impressive $38,800 during the one-day event.
“We have a great team of volunteers (about 20) who made this day happen by gathering donations and raffle items, grilling brats and chorizos, selling raffle tickets, brewing bloody Mary’s and mimosas, designing flags and memorial signs, advertising, accounting for our funds, and many other tasks. It’s incredible to watch it all come together,” says Shelley Bennett, one of the event organizers.
“We want to thank the Lassen College softball team for helping set up that morning. We also had help from the Lassen High School drill team, ASB student volunteers, and Miss Lassen County and court and Kolby Loflin who is our power driver on hole twelve.”
The group also thanked all the golfers and their team sponsors, the people who donated amazing prizes to the raffle and the businesses that have continued to support us over the years
The NCCA is a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating out of Lassen and Plumas Counties with the intent to provide people suffering from cancer with support and guidance during their time of need.

Placing wreaths at last year’s ceremony.
Lassen Family Services’ Wreath Laying Ceremony Set for October 10th
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and Lassen Family Services, the sole provider of abuse focused prevention, intervention treatment and victim support services in Lassen County, will hold a special wreath laying ceremony on the morning of October 10th to honor the memory of Deputy Larry Griffith, Officer Robert McElrath, Deputy Jack Hopkins and all law enforcement personnel who put their lives on the line to protect victims of crime and their commitment to ending domestic violence in our community.
Again this year the annual ceremony will be held at the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office on Sheriff Cady Lane beginning at 10:00a.m., and the public is welcome to attend.
The Honor Guard will present the colors and refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
According to Lassen Family Services 40% of California women will experience physical intimate partner violence in their lifetime. In 2012 LFS provided services to 1 out of 48 residents in Lassen County, over 208 of those helped were victims of domestic violence.
Several events are held by the organization during the month of October including the annual Dancing for a Brand New Me fundraiser. Purple ribbons were displayed at local businesses and community agencies to commemorate, acknowledge and bring awareness to the problem of domestic violence.

The show, on the steps of the historic Lassen County Courthouse, is always awesome.
Win Tickets to the Susanville Symphony’s Concert on the Green!
The Susanville Symphony’s 21st season kicks off September 28th, with the always-awesome outdoor Concert on the Green on the lawn at the historic courthouse!
The first concert of the season is one of the most unique outdoor performances you will ever experience. Playing on the steps of Lassen County’s 105-year-old, historic Courthouse, the Concert on the Green features an eclectic mix of music – classical, pop, rock, funk, big band – in what has become the most well-attended concert of each season.
“The concert season is upon us! We are holding our membership drive at the moment, trying to get new members, and some of the previous members.,” explains Symphony Artistic Director and Conductor Ben Wade.
“The biggest advantages to having season tickets are saving money and making sure you have a reserved middle seat in the United Methodist Church.”
Or, as Wade puts it simply, “Plan ahead, get season tickets, and sit pretty.”
There will be a raffle and prizes for those who sign up for season tickets at the Concert on the Green, as well as a prize for the best “dressed” table.
Beyond the Concert on the Green, this season’s concert themes include ‘Legends of the Fall’ in October at the famous Satica Barn owned by Larry and Donna Smith, the ever-popular Christmas Concert at the United Methodist Church, the Spring Fling Big Band and the Pops Concert in May featuring the Wonderful World of Disney.
If you buy a season ticket now you will get a discounted price on the five-concert season. General admission to each concert is $35, so if you plan to see them all the $150 season ticket makes sense. Tickets at the door will be $40 each.
Would you like to win a pair of tickets? Of course you would!
You can enter once per day, per email address, from now until midnight September 26th, to win a pair of tickets to the concert on the green performance. We will announce the name of our ticket winners on September 27th. Click here to head over to SusanvilleStuff for details and an entry form.
