Lassen Municipal Utility District’s Annual Customer Appreciation Celebration

Lassen Municipal Utility District’s big annual Customer Appreciation Celebration will be held today, September 3rd, in the big parking lot at the corner of North Gay and Main Streets.

LMUD’s first customer appreciation celebration took place in June of 2008.

“That year, LMUD staff, management, and board members started a tradition that has grown into a much-loved celebration of community-owned power,” explains LMUD Public Relations Manager Theresa Phillips.

The expanded event, which has been held at its new location for three years now, features a giant tent for plenty of shaded seating, cool giveaways – including $100 LMUD energy gift cards – and the famous 1/4 lbs. all-beef hot dogs.

“There’s seating for up to 100 people, so we encourage folks to sit and relax and enjoy lunch with family and friends.”

Lunch at the event will be served from 11a.m. until 1:30p.m., and you can spin the Wheel of Fortune for a chance to win a Jackery Portable Generator or other great prizes.

You can also pick up a swag bag with lots of goodies.

“LMUD is proud to serve our friends, neighbors and family with reliable, affordable electricity,” said Phillips.

“Events like our customer appreciation celebration give you an opportunity to meet with LMUD board members, management and staff, allowing you to ask questions and voice your comments on how your utility is operating.”

Summer Porches Boutique Closing and Hours Change

Summer Porches Boutique on Hall Street will be closing by the end of December. Stacey Burton, owner of the business says, “I want to thank everyone for their support through these past few years, it’s been a pleasure serving you. I appreciate every single one of you. Hopefully we will see you all during this time until December.”

If Burton can find a new building in a good location with parking she hopes to reopen in 2027, so don’t give up hope.

Prior to closing, Summer Porches Boutique will have new hours until the end of the year. The current hours are Thursdays from 11:00a.m. to 3:00p.m., and Fridays 11:00a.m. to 6:00p.m., and Saturday 11:30a.m. to 6:00p.m.

Summer Porches is located at 60 Hall Street, suite 4, inside the Sierra Suites Building. Tuesday and Wednesday you can call 1.661.346.4640 for an appointment.

Keep an eye on Summer Porches Boutique’s Facebook page for sales between now and the end of the year.

Lassen Crime Stoppers Launches Annual
Fall Fundraisers: Tickets Available at Wheels West

“Crime Doesn’t Pay… But We Do!” Lassen County Crime Stoppers is making our community safer, one tip at a time. The volunteer-run organization, which works in close partnership with local law enforcement, has put together an exceptionally successful year, with community tips directly leading to multiple arrests and the recovery of stolen property and funds.

Now, local residents have an opportunity to give back and support the mission during Crime Stoppers’ annual Fall Fundraiser.

This year alone, the group received 42 tips—37 by phone and 5 via social media—which has resulted in 6 arrests. In turn, tipsters received a total of $850 in anonymous cash rewards. Lassen Crime Stoppers also approved special $1,000 rewards for several high-profile investigations, including spearheading the search for information regarding the homicide of Janesville veterinarian Richard Meinert.

Every single dollar contributed goes straight toward community outreach and funding cash rewards to combat crime throughout Lassen County. Since forming in 2016, the organization has awarded nearly $10,000 to more than 100 tipsters—though many civic-minded citizens decline a reward altogether, simply wanting to help keep their neighborhoods safe.

This fall, Crime Stoppers has rolled out two big raffles alongside a community roundup program with Susanville Ace Hardware.

Celebrate Local Agriculture at the 2nd Annual Harvest Hootenanny October 3rd

The Local Area Revitalization Project Co-Op, in collaboration with the California Open Farm Passport program, will host the 2nd Annual Lassen County Grown Harvest Hootenanny on Saturday, October 3rd, from 2:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. at Wemple’s Pumpkin Patch, located at 450-525 Wemple Lane in Milford.

Billed as a celebration of Lassen County’s local food, local folks, and the land that feeds us, this family-friendly gathering is completely free to attend.

larplogo image

Throughout the afternoon and evening, visitors can wander through a local producer market, check out the farmer and agricultural resource fair, take host farm tours, and participate in demonstrations and educational workshops. There will also be plenty of activities for kids alongside live local music.

A farm-to-table dinner will be served at 5:30p.m., highlighting farm-to-fork pulled pork sandwiches and sides prepared by chef Dustin Kelly of Side Iron BBQ and the Sacred Heart Men’s Church group using ingredients produced by area farmers and ranchers. Lassen Ale Works will be on hand serving craft beer, and Thompson Peak Lavender will offer their signature lavender lemonade.

Proceeds from the celebration directly benefit the LARP Co-Op Youth Agriculture Scholarships Program, which supports local agribusinesses as well as agricultural training and education for local youth.

Because dinner tickets sold out last year, community members are encouraged to plan ahead. While a limited number of meals may be available the day of the event, tickets will open for advance purchase soon, and an email list is available on the event website for first notification.

To learn more, sign up for dinner ticket updates, or register to participate as a vendor, sponsor, or resource fair presenter, click here and visit lassencogrown.com.

Freshmen, Sophs Set for Fight

September 3, 1934

Fresh and Sophomores of Lassen Union high school are today engaged in their first interclass clash of the new term, the annual “tie-up”, staged on the high school athletic field.

The classes will be lined up on opposite ends of the field and on the signal of the referee will charge. The class having the most opponents effectively trussed will be declared the winner.

The “tie-up” generally establishes the status of Frosh and Sophs. The victory for the former will mean that the Sophs will not have as easy a time this year with their traditional enemies while a victory for the Sophomores will mean the Frosh are to be the underdogs for the balance of the term.
