FEBRUARY 2024

Principal Message

Dear Webb Middle School Families,

We hope this newsletter finds you well and filled with the warmth of the season. As we step into the month of February, we have exciting updates and important information to share with our wonderful community.

February is a month that brings a sense of togetherness and celebration. Our students have been working hard, and we are proud of their achievements. As we move forward, let's continue to foster a positive learning environment where every student feels valued and supported.

1st Semester Honor Roll:

We are thrilled to announce the 1st Semester Honor Roll. Congratulations to these students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and commitment to their studies. Keep up the excellent work!

HONOR ROLL

New 8th Grade Robotics Class:

We are thrilled to introduce our newest addition to the curriculum – Robotics featuring VEX IQ robot kits. Students will have the opportunity to delve into the world of robotics, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. We can't wait to see the innovative projects they'll create!

We want to express our profound gratitude to the W.R. & Floy A. Sauey Family Foundation for their incredibly generous donation and support of our Webb Robotics class. Their contribution has not only allowed us to purchase essential robotic equipment but has also opened up an extraordinary opportunity for our students.

The Seats engineers will be visiting our student engineers in the classroom and have also extended an invitation for our students to visit their workplace at Seats Inc. headquarters in Reedsburg. This firsthand experience of seeing robotics in action outside of the classroom will undoubtedly inspire our students and demonstrate the real-world applications of the skills they are learning.

Once again, I cannot thank the Sauey Family Foundation enough for their support and investment in our students' future. We are truly fortunate to have partners like them.

We look forward to a month filled with achievements and growth. Thank you for your continued support.

Respectfully,

Matt Delkamp, Principal

The most exciting week of the year at Webb Middle School is here! The 3rd annual Webb PRIDE Week will be an active, competitive, and fun-filled week of extracurricular activities. Contests, talent showcases, and more will kick off on February 5th and culminate in an assembly on February 9th.

While maintaining a fairly regular academic schedule, students and staff engage in tons of school-spirit activities, grade vs grade and teacher vs student competitions, and an end-of-the-week assembly.

While a major goal of PRIDE Week is to energize students and staff during a seemingly endless time of year, it also serves as a reminder of what “PRIDE” means to us at Webb, which is:

P-repared

R-espectful

I-ntegrity

D-edication

E-xcellence

Staff and students alike look forward to this week all year. Rumor has it that the current 8th-grade class is going for a PRIDE Week 3-peat as champions!

Stay tuned next month for an update on how it went!

Hands-On Learning

Ms. Schyvinck's math students recently had an amazing learning experience in the kitchen. They sharpened their skills in fractions and measurements while preparing for the upcoming bake sale.

These talented students not only showcased their culinary abilities but also actively participated in selling the delectable treats during lunch on December 13th. The students thoroughly enjoyed this learning opportunity, and it was a fantastic way to kickstart the holiday season!

Mr. Dregney's

8th Grade Tech Ed

Intarsia is an elaborate form of inlaid work made from small pieces of variously colored wood. For much of 1st semester, the 8th-grade technology education students have been energetically creating their amazing intarsia projects after choosing from more than 85 different patterns.

The projects could range in number of pieces from 20 to over 100. The students have a paper pattern for their project, which gives the students suggestions for wood color/species and grain direction. After selecting a board, the students use a planer to get the board to the correct thickness. Once the piece is traced onto the board, the students use scroll saws to cut out the intarsia piece.

During the process, students will also use a variety of sanders, a band saw, a panel saw, and a radial arm saw. After all the pieces have been cut out and the project glued to a plywood backing, the students make a frame to fit the project where they use machines such as table routers, a miter saw, orbital sanders, and a brad nailer.

The students also had the opportunity to create a name tag for their project and have that engraved with the new laser engraver. The laser engraver was purchased through the Carl Perkins Grant. The Carl Perkins Grant provides federal funding to states to improve both secondary and postsecondary career and technical education programs. This grant originates from the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act, first authorized in 1984 and then again in 1998.

The last step involves applying a spray finish to protect the wood and bring out the different wood colors.

All of the lumber for these projects was generously donated by Reedsburg Hardwoods, which makes this project possible.

Ms. Reynolds's Top 10 Hidden Gems

A few decades ago, about a handful of years into my teaching career, I had the distinct privilege of attending a conference session hosted by teacher/author Elizabeth Bomer. Since this time, I have attended countless classes, inservices, and sessions held by experts in the fields of education, language, reading, and writing. There’s still something oddly mystical about that first session of Betsy’s. It was powerful and delicious, and her words truly shaped the way in which I both view and grade student writing still today. Since that first meeting, I have purchased Bomer’s books and have heard her speak on two other occasions. One of her techniques is simple, yet it is powerful. It is the practice, as a writing teacher, to find and celebrate students’ Hidden Gems or the lovely little nuggets nestled in the stacks of kids’ essays. For me, these are the parts, sentences, phrases, or words that cause me to lift my grading pen, pause, and reread. These are the “Wow!” moments. They are the unique, funny, wistful, and beautiful things students share, and after 27 years of grading papers, they still have the power to move me. From my last batch of 109 seventh-grade language arts essays, here are my Top 10 (in no particular order) Hidden Gems. (*Names are withheld, as the essays are personal essays.)

10. “There is more to this self than just car windows.”

9. “This me would love to have a rooftop I could climb onto just to sit there and basically do nothing.”

8. “There is never something I don’t like to do, whether it’s lying down or performing death-defying stunts.”

7. “When the leaves fall and a chilly wind blows, I know it’s time for some pancakes at midnight.”

6. “I am as sharp as broken glass and just as fragile.”

5. Much like the seasons of the year, my personality ‘climate’ changes every once in a while.”

4. “This self is the one who loves to escape from the reality of the world and uses her imagination to think the unimaginable.”

3. “To continue, I don’t like to be bothered… I’d rather sit in my bed with my blankie and listen to music until my ears fall off.”

2. “In this mode, I am sassy and stubborn, which aren’t always great traits because they get me grounded a lot, but hey, at least I don’t have the personality of a beige wall!”

1. “The last room in my house of selves is very strange; in this room, there are a lot of squirrels, and no one knows why.”

The Tutor Club

Our WLC is organizing a Tutor Club for students by students. 7th and 8th-grade students are creating a system for their peers to ask for help during their study halls. Grade level bins will be available in the counselor's office to request assistance. The Tutor Club committee will assign a member to help that student complete and understand their school work. The goal is to create a positive relationship between grade levels by supporting students' academic needs. Other members are organizing time to work with students in Ms. Mittelstaedt's classroom. We are looking forward to beginning the Tutor Club.

Attention all book enthusiasts and trivia masters! The highly anticipated Battle of the Books is just around the corner, and students are buzzing with excitement. Our newly established Battle of the Books club has ignited a passion for reading and friendly competition among our avid readers.

With the battle set to take place at the end of February, our teams of dedicated readers have been diving into the pages of 20 captivating books.

Each team member has embraced the challenge by immersing themselves in 5 of these literary treasures, preparing to showcase their knowledge and love for literature.

The excitement is building as our school gets ready to host its very own exciting schoolwide battle. Teams will face off, testing their book smarts in an epic showdown.

Who will come out on top and have the honor of representing our school in the statewide Battle of the Books competition?

Get ready to see the love for reading and the fun of friendly competition as our teams compete for the chance to shine on the statewide stage. The battle is about to begin, and the excitement is real! Keep an eye out for more updates as we dive into this thrilling literary adventure.

Dear Families,

We have partnered with CharacterStrong – an organization that provides training for educators and curricula for students. Their work focuses on three main outcomes: increasing a sense of belonging for all students, improving skills that support student well-being, and deepening student engagement in their academics, in their school, and in their community.

This curriculum was created to support school communities as they engage in the work of preparing young people to thrive in the 21st century. The lessons focus on developing skills and mindsets around building positive habits, understanding our emotions, improving teamwork, and increasing empathy.

One key part of nearly every lesson is the “Character Dare.” These are invitations near the end of most lessons to put the content that students are learning into action in the real world. Ask your student about the most recent Character Dare.

We will also be inviting families to try the “Family Dare” each month.

__________________________

This month’s FAMILY DARE is

Hour by Hour:

Plan a family night or day together. Have each member of the family plan 30 minutes to 1 hour of the event!

Each person plans his or her own portion, and then you can all work together to figure out how to fit all the pieces into one agenda for the night.

Forward Exam Testing

The Forward Exam is a standardized assessment mandated by the state of Wisconsin in grades 3-8 and in 10th-grade social studies. For middle schools, it includes tests in the areas of English language arts (ELA) and mathematics for grades 6 and 7, and ELA, mathematics, science, and social studies for grade 8. The testing window is from March 18 - April 26 this year. A more detailed schedule will be sent out in the near future, but please try to avoid scheduling any appointments or planned absences on school days during this time. One or more subtests may be administered on any given day during the testing window.

Freshman Scheduling

Our 8th graders are filling out course selection sheets for high school, which are due to the Counseling Office on January 24th. If you haven’t seen this sheet, feel free to inquire with your child to discuss what classes they are interested in for their Freshman year of high school. Please direct any questions to either of us in the Counseling Office. Time goes by fast - be sure to make the most of it with your children and build a relationship with them that will last and carry into adulthood.
