FEBRUARY 2024

Principal Message

Dear Webb Middle School Community,

As we navigate through the academic year and roll into March, it's essential to reflect on the environment we cultivate within our school walls. At Webb Middle School, we are committed to fostering not only academic growth but also a positive climate where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Building a Positive Climate

Creating a positive climate starts with building strong relationships among students, staff, and families. We believe in the power of kindness, respect, and inclusivity. Whether it's a smile in the hallway, a word of encouragement in the classroom, or a supportive gesture during extracurricular activities, every interaction contributes to the fabric of our school culture.

Promoting Respect and Understanding

Respect is at the core of our interactions. We encourage students to embrace diversity, celebrate differences, and cultivate empathy. We strive to promote understanding and acceptance among our diverse student body.

Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment

Ensuring the physical and emotional safety of our students is paramount. We have implemented various procedural measures and the Character Strong programming to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and seeking help when needed.

Empowering Student Voice and Leadership

We value the voices of our students and recognize them as active participants in shaping our school community. Through the Student Leadership Cooperative, newly forming clubs, and various leadership opportunities, we empower students to take ownership of their learning experiences, advocate for positive change, and contribute to the betterment of our school.

Looking Ahead

As we continue our journey at Webb Middle School, let us reaffirm our commitment to cultivating a positive climate where every student feels valued, respected, and inspired to learn. Together, we can create an environment where academic excellence thrives and every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the success of our students.

Respectfully,

Matt Delkamp, Principal

2024 PRIDE Week at Webb was Again a Great Success!

Webb PRIDE Week was held February 5th-9th. There were tons of fun activities throughout the week that culminated in a lively assembly on the 9th. Students were offered a wide array of activities and competitions to choose from. Some staples, such as the grand prize game and an art contest, were big hits again. There were some new activities, such as the school-wide game of "Clue" and a lunchtime rock-paper-scissors competition that had students active and engaged all week.

At the end of the assembly on Friday, the results showed that the lively and rambunctious 6th-grade class had pulled off the upset and won 2024 PRIDE Week glory!

It is a great week for staff and students alike, and many lifelong memories are made along the way. The kind competitiveness, many talents on display, and class camaraderie are something that we all look forward to every year!

From the Classroom

Exciting news from our Life Skills class. Students are currently learning about real-world finance and developing important skills in responsible money management. In class, students are engaged through hands-on activities and interactive online simulations. These resources allow them to explore essential expenses they may encounter when living on their own. They gain valuable insights and practical knowledge by immersing themselves in realistic scenarios.

Webb Leadership Group In Action

Isabelle Eberle, Lily Simonson, and Gwen Krolikowski from the Leadership Group are helping students out in Ms. Mittelstaedt's classroom.

Dear Families,

We have partnered with CharacterStrong – an organization that provides training for educators and curricula for students. Their work focuses on three main outcomes: increasing a sense of belonging for all students, improving skills that support student well-being, and deepening student engagement in their academics, in their school, and in their community.

This curriculum was created to support school communities as they engage in the work of preparing young people to thrive in the 21st century. The lessons focus on developing skills and mindsets around building positive habits, understanding our emotions, improving teamwork, and increasing empathy.

One key part of nearly every lesson is the “Character Dare.” These are invitations near the end of most lessons to put the content that students are learning into action in the real world. Ask your student about the most recent Character Dare.

We will also be inviting families to try the “Family Dare” each month.

This month’s FAMILY DARE is

Quality Catch Up:

Invest 10 minutes each day this week right when everyone gets home to sit together and share about your day. No distractions, just full attention to what matters: each other.

Use intentional questions like; What was a high and a low today? From 1-10, how was the day, and how will tomorrow be better? What’s a snapshot from today that you want to remember? If you had to describe your day as a type of weather, how would you describe it?

Forward Testing is here!

Wisconsin requires schools to complete an assessment called the Wisconsin Forward Exam. The Exam is designed to gauge how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. These standards outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be college and career-ready. The Forward Exam is administered in the spring of each school year at:

  • grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics,
  • grades 4 and 8 in Science and,
  • grades 4, 8, and 10 in Social Studies.

Below are the dates our students will be testing. Please do your best to have your student in attendance on these days. We would also appreciate your help in ensuring your child has their charged Chromebook each day.

All grades:

  • Thursday, April 4, 8:00-10:30
  • Thursday, April 11, 8:00-10:30

Additional testing for 8th graders:

  • Tuesday, April 9, 8:30-10:45
  • Tuesday, April 16, 8:30-10:00

Mid-Year BARK Reminder

By this time of year, we find that many forget about our online monitoring program, BARK. BARK monitors all school-owned student accounts, including Google Drive, email, searches, and chats for concerning content. These accounts are monitored whether the student is accessing it at school or another location.

While we bring notifications to the attention of students and parents, we felt it would be helpful to share some technology tips with families. It is helpful to have set guidelines around technology, such as limits on time, spaces appropriate for technology use, and where devices should be put when it is time to sleep. We have heard that some households even keep devices in a common space to charge overnight so there are no temptations to use them if someone cannot sleep.

If you have any questions about these suggestions, please contact the school counselors.

The School District of Reedsburg Board of Education seeks input on a potential phase one project. In early March, a community-wide survey will be distributed to gather input to help the board determine its next steps in the process.

The community's feedback will aid in deciding whether to proceed with the current project scope, make necessary adjustments, or temporarily halt facilities planning. Implementing the long-term facility plan in phases will help to distribute costs over time, making it more affordable for taxpayers. It's crucial to receive input and direction from the survey about the potential first phase, so please take the time to complete it.
