A Message from our Principals...
We are quickly winding down the first half of our school year. The last day of the first semester is January 24th. Please join us in encouraging your middle school student to finish strong! Grades and assignments can be checked online at any time using parent access on Skyward . If you need assistance getting set-up with a password, just give us a call, and we can help you out.

Looking back, December was a busy month for our students. We were honored to attend the concerts performed by our band, choir, and orchestra students. The sixth grade music students put on another wonderful holiday musical. A special thank you to our teaching staff, support staff, and CAL Center staff for your efforts in making these productions so awesome. What a great experience for our students and their families! We have also finished another round of extra-curricular seasons. Over 75 students participated in boys, basketball and wrestling this year. Congratulations to all of those students and parents for their efforts! Thank you to the coaches for your time and dedication to making the lives of our students better. We truly appreciate what you do!

8th Grade Science Fair Quickly Approaching
Near the end of January, students will be starting their Science Fair projects for the 2020 Science Fair. The date for this year’s event will be Friday, March 20th. Right now, students should start focusing on coming up with some different ideas for their projects. Although a large portion of their project will be worked on at school, students will also be working on their experimental portion of the project at home. Keep a look-out for handouts coming home on ways you can help support your student during this process. Please feel free to contact us with questions you may have.

(Information will also be posted to Mrs. Templin’s Website under Science Fair.)

Pioneering Your Future in STEM!
Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade Girls!

Pioneering Your Future in STEM is a day-long workshop offered at UW-Platteville for girls interested in math and science. It is a fun event with hands-on workshops. The mission of this program is to have the participants learn about careers that are not familiar to them and get to know girls from other schools. We want to expose them to topics they might not choose on their own, which is why they are assigned sessions. Interested girls should watch for more information to come. For more information check out: Pioneering Your Future In STEM .

Sixth Grade Students in the Giving Spirit
The 6th graders raised $594.55 for families in need in our community. This money is put toward clothing and gifts for kids in these families, as well as a basket of household supplies. The sixth grade has made this an annual tradition because we feel it is the best way to give back to kids in our own school district and make their holidays to be a little bit brighter. Thank you to all the families who donated to this cause.

Updates From the Sixth Grade Language Classes
Sixth grade students have been busy in their language classes. In December, each class took part in a classroom spelling bee. The students became familiar and comfortable with the format of a spelling bee during practice rounds. All did a spectacular job when the competitions were held. It was great to see classmates encouraging each other and runner-ups congratulating the winners. Class winners were as follows: Mackenzie Cownover, Theron Luetkens, Jonah Williams, Ethan Rego, Brayden Klemp, Jazmyn Labansky, Makayla Romanelli, and Taylor Crowder. Those eight students then competed against each other to determine one finalist for the sixth grade. Congratulations to Ethan! He will participate in a spelling bee with a seventh grade winner and an eighth grade winner this month.

In addition to spelling, sixth graders are also improving their writing skills and studying grammar. Mrs. Baker's students returned to school on January 2nd to learn a new writing technique: Six Word Stories. The challenge was to write a full story in exactly six words. It was exciting to see the students realize whether they are writing multiple paragraphs or only a few words, planning and editing are needed. Students of Mrs. Cantwell will be using stop motion to demonstrate action verbs. Individual students will create a character to show a verb such as jump or eat and then be paired with a classmate. Mrs. Hirst's language classes are also beginning a unit on verbs. What's next for sixth grade writers? They will have the opportunity to prepare an entry for the Young Author's Conference which is held at UW-Baraboo.
