Supporting LGBTQ Black Communities: Philanthropy's Role in Intersectional Movements

In partnership with Funders for LGBTQ Issues, this webinar will offer an overview of the current state of philanthropic support for Black LGBTQ communities and consider philanthropy’s role in the past, present, and future of Black LGBTQ movements.

An article in the Bay Area Reporter entitled LGBTQ Agenda: Study shows Black LGBTQs receive 5% of philanthropic funds, reports that while Black Americans make up 12% of the country's LGBTQ population, they receive only 5% of the country's LGBTQ grant dollars, according to a recently published study.

"Philanthropy OUTlook: LGBTQ Black Communities" was released October 21 and paints a bleak portrait of how overall LGBTQ philanthropy interacts with the Black LGBTQ community.

All told, foundation funding for Black LGBTQ communities in the United States totaled $7.4 million in 2018, according to the study, up from $5.4 million the previous year. According to a report from the same organization released earlier this year, the total of all 2018 LGBTQ grantmaking was $209.2 million.

The study was produced by the nonprofit organization Funders for LGBTQ Issues in partnership with ABFE: A Philanthropic Partnership for Black Communities.

The study also found that Black trans and gender-nonconforming people received less than 1% of all the funding for LGBTQ issues that year.
