Beneficial Ownership Information Reporting became effective January 1, 2024. It is the process of collecting and disclosing information about the individuals who ultimately own, control, or benefit from a company or other legal entity. This reporting is designed to increase transparency and combat illicit activities such as money laundering, terrorist financing, tax evasion, and corruption.
But what does that mean for companies operating in the United States?
Most companies meet the basic qualifications for being a reporting company. However, there are exemptions which may allow your company not to report the information.
If your company is not exempt from reporting requirements, owners and other persons information will need to be reported. When the reporting is due depends on when the company was formed and if there have been changes to company ownership or persons with substantial control.
