As part of the rollout of our new how-to book, we are spotlighting the magical moments that non-profits of all different sizes, missions and parts of the country achieved their first $1 million gifts. The proud story of Holyoke Community College's (HCC) in Massachusetts goes back to 1946. It was a fledgling institution that lacked many of the resources traditionally associated with community colleges. Fortunately, alumni stepped up to change that. One of their most distinguished alumni, the late Michael Kittredge (’73), was Founder of Yankee Candle Company, a global retailing giant. Kittredge proudly pointed out that without HCC he would have never enjoyed success in the business world. Leveraged by the close relationship of a favorite faculty member, he joyfully donated $1 million to jump start a successful $4 million capital campaign. At the time this represented the largest individual alumni gift to any community college in Massachusetts. Today HCC continues to grow as a vibrant educator and workforce development engine for the region. This brief video provides an insider’s view of how this historic gift moved from dream to reality. Our new book empowers professional and volunteer non-profit leaders to achieve their own transformational first or next $1 million gifts.
