GGUSD Invests in AVID Excellence

This week, more than 320 GGUSD teachers and school leaders attended the AVID Strategic Leadership Conference and AVID Summer Institute to collaborate and strengthen AVID strategies that help students thrive.

The energy was electric as AVID teams developed innovative ideas that will continue to elevate teaching and learning across GGUSD classrooms. We are proud of the impact AVID is making across GGUSD elementary, intermediate and high schools.

Last year’s AVID seniors achieved a 90.4% a-g completion rate and 87% were accepted to four-year universities. GGUSD is home to 3 National AVID Demonstration Schools at Alamitos, Doig and Santiago. We can’t wait to continue building on that success in 2026-27.

Here are answers to a few of our most frequently asked questions:

🎒 Still need to enroll? There's still time! Schools reopen on July 27, and school staff are ready to help families complete enrollment before the first day of school on August 10. Questions? Contact the Office of Elementary Education at (714) 663-6333.

🚽 Does my child need to be potty trained? While it is recommended that families potty train their child before TK, we understand that some children may not be fully potty trained, and we have resources in place to support families. Every TK classroom has personnel in place to support students with potty training.

🍎 Will my child receive free meals? Yes! Every GGUSD student receives free breakfast and lunch, regardless of household income.

💙 Visit www.ggusd.us to find information about student transfers, Family Resource Centers, enrollment requirements, and other resources to help your family prepare for a successful start to the school year.

GGUSD CTE Students Complete Their Summer Internships

Congratulations to more than 100 GGUSD Career & Technical Education (CTE) students who successfully completed their six-week summer internships!

Working alongside professionals at more than 40 businesses, organizations and GGUSD departments, these students gained valuable real-world experience in fields including healthcare, engineering, information technology, automotive, education, business, skilled trades and more.

After building a strong foundation through their CTE coursework, students put their skills into action while developing professionalism, communication, teamwork, problem-solving and adaptability—preparing them for success in college, careers and beyond.

This year also marked an exciting expansion of internship opportunities within GGUSD, giving students hands-on experience in district departments and summer school classrooms while showcasing the many career paths that help support student success every day.

GGUSD is proud to partner with local businesses and organizations to provide meaningful learning experiences that empower students to explore their passions, build confidence and prepare for bright futures.

Santiago High Schoolers Are Prepping for Upcoming Season

While school is out, the dedicated student-athletes at Santiago High School are making every practice count. The Drill Team is sharpening routines with precision, teamwork, and determination, while the Girls Flag Football team is building strength, speed, and skills as they prepare for an exciting season ahead.

Their commitment throughout the summer reflects GGUSD's Goal 2 by fostering personal growth, discipline, leadership, and confidence—both on and off the field. Every rep, every routine, and every practice brings them one step closer to success.

GGUSD Offers Online Learning Resources to Keep Students Engaged

We encourage families to help students during the summer months stay engaged and prepared for the 2026–27 school year. As we do each summer, GGUSD has compiled free online resources for students in grades K–12, including access to digital textbooks, learning platforms, and parent support tools. Students may use these tools to preview the next year’s content across subjects so they can be prepared for the academic year to come or to review concepts from the past school year they have yet to master!
