Technical Fridays

Forever Chemical - Chemistry and Regulations

Time: May 12, 12 - 1:15 p.m. EST

Virtual on Zoom

Part 1 of 2

Free* | Suggested Donation: $10

PFOA, PFAS, PFNA, and others, better known as Forever Chemicals, have received lots of attention recently. They are prevalent in everyday products like nonstick cookware, stain resistant carpets, and clothing. As a result, we are finding them more and more in our surface water, groundwater, soil, and even in our bodies. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has linked these chemicals to certain cancers and other health concerns.

Join us for part one of a two-part Technical Friday webinar about substances deemed Forever Chemicals and what is being done to regulate them in the environment, treat them in our drinking water and remediate them in our soil and groundwater.

We are applying to the NJ Continuing Legal Education Board for approval of credits.

There is a fee ($25) if you are joining to receive CLE credits. Hardship waivers are available for the CLE credit cost.

Mapping Workshop with DEP

May 18, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. EST

In-Person (31 Titus Mill Road, Pennington, NJ)

Free

This workshop is for community members, municipal staff, and local advocates.

Together, we can all contribute to the health of our waterways by understanding our stormwater systems, mapping them, and participating in the development of future Watershed Improvement Plans required by the MS4 permit. The workshop will show how community members can help their municipalities with the MS4 mapping requirements by learning how to use tools provided by the NJDEP.

Staff from NJDEP will teach how to use Department provided tools to meet the mapping and inventory requirements of the 2023 Tier A MS4 permit. There will be discussion on how local watershed groups and interested community members can contribute to the work of their municipalities and counties to assist in meeting their mapping requirements.

NJDEP staff will also give guidance on steps that can be taken in a watershed after the mapping has been completed to help improve water quality such as inspecting outfalls for illicit discharges and stream scouring, ensuring the maintenance of stormwater management facilities, and developing the Watershed Improvement Plan (WIP).

Time will be provided after the classroom training session for attendees to try out the mapping tools in person on their own devices. NJDEP staff will be present to answer questions and provide assistance.
