The Contemporary Woman
Her Perspective
|
|
Once limited to being the inspiration or subject models, women for centuries have taken brush, chisel and camera into their own hands, changing the art world forever and the way we see women.

“Every time I have had a problem, I have confronted it with the ax of art.”

A Moment Ago
As a contemporary figurative painter, Tamara Poff is focused on the expressive quality of the human form, having studied with renowned portrait and figure painters Joseph Lorusso, Seth Haverkamp, and Daniel Bilmes. Her method of Intertwining narrative imagery with the figure raises questions in her work, like, “Who is this person? How did they get here? What are they thinking?” Her subject's attitudes, emotions, placement, or predicaments tell the story.

Protectress
Dreams are a common source of inspiration and here, to better unravel a thread of (often vague, enigmatic) images, I will intuitively bring these into form - to help crystallize their energy and symbolic charge. As well, I often find myself enraptured by nature’s own imagery. If I snap a photo or pick up a paint brush - it’s because I’m moved to commune with the beauty, complexity and apparent consciousness of the natural world - the imperfect perfection of every living thing.

Dreaming
Many years ago I began as a watercolor painter. In 2012 I began rediscovering the beauty of the medium. There is a great difference, however, because I'm bringing 30 years experience in art making - all that I've learned - as I revisit this remarkable medium. It has been an interesting journey adding my earlier collage and gold leaf work and my more recent printmaking work to the beauty of the transparency of watercolor. Further, using the substrate of Yupo has opened a whole new aspect of creating images.

Beauty Parlor
"I am a realist storyteller, I've always been intrigued by human natures intricate details. I find the physical, spiritual and social awareness of the human condition utterly beautiful. It's this complexity of life ordeals combined with the subtleties of life's emotion, struggles and the environment in which humanity occupy that I attempt to capture in my mix media style of painting and drawing.

I am Recycled
Based out of Groton Massachusetts, Dana has been creating art for over 30 years. She recently discovered a love affair with watercolor, a growing fondness for acrylics, and a passion for alcohol inks; the delicate florals and abstract fluidity she creates evoke the beauty of nature, while the silhouettes present in her work represent the human connection to the natural world.

Nightfall
Drenda Duff regards figurative art, composed and arranged in natural surroundings, as a favorite subject for her watercolor and oil paintings. She is also interested in still life and landscape. In all subjects there is significant deliberation on the use of light in order to communicate mood or presence. In addition she considers studying artists and their work, both contemporary and from the past, as pivotal to her own growth and learning process. Her study of art history is employed not only as an instructive tool but also to stimulate her own ideas and creative process.

Watching
My work is an act of storytelling, a gesture of intimacy, a psychological disrobing, an imaginary conversation. The threads that weave my work together are beauty, fantasy, curiosity and imagination. The task is to keep my ego quiet, my mind clear and my heart open, in a process of exploration, experimentation and letting go. I discover tools for problem solving in the quiet, jigsaws for my mind. When successful, I create a place where you can lose yourself for a while, tuck the troubles of the world away and just dream.

Watching My Tether Disappear
As a portrait artist my inspiration is drawn solely from my subjects and their hidden emotional truths. To be able to capture those emotions, I model my work in black and white colored pencil on drafting film. Working with a limited pallet allows me to concentrate on the composition, form, texture, tonal values and lighting.

"You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul"

Kathryn grew up by the sea along the picturesque shore of Belfast Lough. Inspired by the ever-changing sea and sky surrounding her, she began capturing the formations of cloud and differing light effects through the mediums of paint and photography. A school trip to the Ulster Museum in Belfast to view their art collections prompted her to enroll on a variety of art courses where she explored a range of acrylic and oil painting techniques.
|
Whilst quietly developing her artistic talents, she qualified as a teacher and taught art to primary school children. Encouraged by artistic friends and gallery owners, she has exhibited her paintings at a number of local venues and galleries.
|
The dominant themes in her paintings remain Irish seascapes and landscapes and her motivation to paint stems from her love of the natural world, and her frequent trips to the West of Ireland especially Donegal, Mayo and Galway.’
|
"When I sit down to paint I lose myself in colours and textures.
Time slips by and I finish each session feeling refreshed and renewed"
|
|
|
|
Since early childhood in Ireland images of far-flung places have always fascinated me. The albums of pictures taken by my father, a world traveler and accomplished amateur photographer, fascinated me. He worked for a small brewing company in West Cork and often received letters from suppliers overseas and he would give me the stamps for my collection. Stamps became the window to my world.
|
In the 1980s I was definitely engrossed in all things Japanese and was very influenced by the extravagance of Noh costumes. In the 90s, career demands and lots of travel forced me to put my art on hold. But I never stopped collecting images and formulating ideas for that day when “I would get back to painting”! Finally that day arrived in 2012 when I retired – free at last!
|
I’d always wanted to try collage and mixed media. Mixed media allows me to pull images together, re-size or distort them and enhance with paint, pencil, and a variety of different tools. I work on paper, illustration board, canvas and wood panels. I use found and created images.
