Planning a wedding coming out of a pandemic


If you haven't heard, it's hard to come by wedding venues right now! That's because so many weddings were put on hold over the past two years, and now there's a lot of competition for space. We researched 23 places before finding one that was available and within our budget. We signed a contract in March - giving us four months to pull this off.


One our way to this decision, we considered all our options: a local wedding, a destination wedding, and an elopement (well, one of us considered elopement). Ultimately we decided on a wedding in Austin, and then a family event in Long Beach.



Our venue: Mattie's at Green Pastures


The farmhouse was built in 1894 and sold to Henry Faulk in 1916, a local attorney known for his pro-union and anti-racist positions. He wanted a farmhouse to have a place "outside of town" with room for more chickens and cows, and he dubbed the property Green Pastures. During the Great Depression he gave eggs and milk to those in the surrounding neighborhood and those living along the creek.


The property is two blocks away from the A-frame house that Ed lived in when he first moved to Austin. It was purchased by a restaurant group in 2015 and modernized as Mattie's restaurant, named after Faulk's wife. You can see photos here.



The Peacocks


The peacocks were gifted to the family more than half a century ago, and they have roamed the property - and the neighborhood - ever since. There are more than two dozen, including some chicks that hatched a few summers ago.
