ABC Virtually Celebrates 2020 STEP Participants
The ABC Empire State Chapter hosted a virtual celebration for our 43 member companies that participate in our STEP program. For those unfamiliar with STEP, it stands for Safety Training Evaluation Process and helps companies create a world-class safety program.  The data we gather through this program clearly shows participating Empire State Chapter members are more than 400% better than the Bureau of Labor Statistics benchmarks for Total Reportable Incident Rates (TRIR) and Days Away Restricted Time (DART). That’s a commitment to safety!

Planning for Tax Increases

With the election behind us we can plan for what taxes may look like for 2021, and it is not good. We are looking at a rollback of all the tax reductions from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. We will be discussing possible ways to reduce the impact, including recognition of taxable income in 2020, as well as the impact of the SECURE and the CARES Acts.
New York State Department of Labor released proposed regulations further interpreting the New York Paid Sick Leave Law
On December 2, 2020, the New York State Department of Labor (DOL) released proposed regulations further interpreting the New York Paid Sick Leave Law (NY PSL). ABC Empire State Chapter Member Goldberg Segalla put together some key takeaways.

Key Takeaways:
  • The NYS DOL has released proposed final regulations interpreting NY PSL
  • They defined terms and clarify questions around documentation requests, accruals, and other issues
  • The proposed regulations still leave many questions unanswered, giving employers small window in which to contact the state for further clarification

Actions for Employers:
We urge employers to contact the DOL with their comments and concerns relating to the proposed regulations so that the final version of the regulations clearly answer NY PSL’s remaining ambiguities.
ABC Signs onto Business Coalition Letter to Curb Increases in Insurance Premiums & Taxes
The ABC Empire State Chapter along with 42 other business advocacy groups signed onto a letter written to New York State Commissioner of Labor Roberta Reardon regarding efforts to curb increases in unemployment insurance premiums and taxes. In order for businesses to recover from the state-mandated shut downs, they cannot be over burdened with insurance premium and tax increases. To read the full letter, click the button below:
