HARD TIMES

Upon reading Jack Nuzum's devotion, MAGNIFICENT METAPHORS: meditation in the Disciple July 3rd, it moved something in me. I'm glad I read the metaphor composition to the end. The very last statement stuck in my mind "Even dead trees live on in the products of their wood". An example might be, the deader the tree the better the violin carefully crafted from it. Not sure that applies but it is true and sounds good.

One of my guitars I named Hard Times, I procured the wood for that guitar from the discard pile of defective guitar parts while visiting the Martin Guitar Company in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. After modifying my original design and carefully working around small cracks and blemished areas, I crafted the dead-discarded-wood into a live decent-sounding and good looking guitar. (I say so myself.)

The long laborious process of shaping, gluing, and varnishing provided me time to reflect. I concluded that what I have done in a small way for these defective guitar parts God continues to do for us in grand and glorious ways. God works with our cracked blemished bodies, mind, and spirit. He smooths over our hard times and thankfully brings our dead-wood back to life.

I sold the guitar, Hard Times, to a dear Christian friend in Richmond, Virginia and mailed with it the following verse which I wrote to the tune of Stephen Foster's song, Hard Times.
Broken sides backs and pieces, lives in disarray.
With tired hearts better days are or'
God mends broken spirits and brings a better day.
Oh Hard Times, come again no more.

Lord I hate buttermilk, Lord I hate lard, but Oh Lord I love biscuits. Lord show me how the bitter ingredients of this pandemic might produce "biscuits". (Dr. David Palmer)
Amen

VIRTUAL TAI CHI WITH KATHY
JULY SPECIAL OFFERING: ZUNI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
For many years St. John's has had a special relationship with our neighbor, Zuni Elementary School. For example, over the years, we have provided school supplies, backpacks, after school programs, and a Back to School Luncheon for the staff.

This year, as you can imagine, Zuni's needs are a bit different. Hand Sanitizers and wipes, kleenex and pump soap top the list! You can donate in kind on Saturday nights. (See separate article for details) Or, of course, you may send monetary donations to the church any time.

Finally, please keep the students and staff of Zuni ( and all the schools in town) in your prayers. Starting up again will be different and stressful for everyone.
ST. JOHN'S FACILITY IS CLOSED UNTIL AUGUST 2
In accordance with the New Mexico Department of Health order, our facility will be closed until August 2! We will keep you apprised as things develop.

Your St. John's pastors and staff are still very much on the job, and are available to you during this time. Please reach out to us if we can help you in any way!
