This afternoon, Governor Phil Murphy announced an additional 223 new positive COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total to 892,983. The rate of transmission is .95 and the positivity rate is 1.49%. An additional 8 deaths were announced, bringing the statewide total to 23,754. 4,940,812 residents are fully vaccinated. The Governor announced that we met our 4.7 million fully vaccinated residents goal 12 days ago!
The Governor announced that Elizabeth, NJ received Lady Liberty's little sister today and that it will be sent to Ellis Island for July 1 - July 7, before being transported to Washington, D.C. to reside at the French Ambassador's residence.
The BPU approved the nation's largest combined offshore wind award bringing the total planned capacity to over 3,700 megawatts! He noted this is a huge step for clean energy, climate action and a strong economy. BPU President, Joe Fiordaliso, added that 1,510 mw was awarded to Atlantic Offshore Wind Company and 1,148mw was awarded to Ocean Wind. This combined energy will supply 1.1million homes in NJ. Also announced today, was the departure of Attorney General Gurbir Grewal as he will join the Biden Administration as the Director of the Division of Enforcement at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The Governor has named Andrew Bruck to serve as Attorney General for the remainder of Grewal's term.
The Department of Health Commissioner, Judy Persichilli, reminded everyone to practice good hygiene this weekend during 4th of July celebrations, and to social distance when necessary. She also advised that hospitals are experiencing a blood shortage, which was greatly effected by the pandemic.
NJ State Police Captain, Pat Callahan, advised of the anticipated high temperature today and strongly encouraged NJ residents to be aware of cooling centers, and especially for those with special needs to register here. As a reminder, please do not leave children or pets in the car, especially during these high temperatures. He also advised to be aware of rip currents, and noted additional State Troopers will be out this weekend to ensure safety of NJ residents.
The Governor will hold his next press briefing on Wednesday, July 7th. Beginning Monday, July 12th, the Governor will hold press briefings on Mondays at 1pm.
