NATIONAL SENIOR CITIZENS DAY

On August 21, National Senior Citizens Day recognizes the achievements of the more mature representatives of our nation. The day provides an opportunity to show our appreciation for their dedication, accomplishments, and services they give throughout their lives.

According to the 2017 census, 47 million seniors live in the United States. By 2060, that number will nearly double. Their wealth of knowledge, skill, and experience offer so much to the next generation. As technologies advance, these are the people who've experienced each step of change. Not only have they contributed to it, but they understand first hand the benefits and the drawbacks. They know life without the advancements that exist today.

By the time you’re eighty years old you’ve learned everything. You only have to remember it. ~ George Burns

Our senior citizens are pioneers of science, medicine, psychology, civil rights and so much more. Their valuable contributions to our communities create better places to live. They deserve the respect and dignity their achievements earn them. The day encourages supporting senior citizens to live their lives to the fullest and as independently as possible.

NATIONAL SPUMONI DAY

National Spumoni Day on August 21 celebrates a delicious frozen treat which hails from southern Italy.

Traditionally, three molded layers of flavored gelato create a unique dessert. The creamy creation often includes candied fruits and nuts in two layers and with a third chocolate layer.

According to a Chicago Tribune article from July 4, 1979, a "genuine spumoni" recipe was brought to the United States from Nola, Italy in 1905. Salvatore Lezza started a bakery in Chicago along with his wife, Lucia. Their traditional recipe called for three layers of semifreddo - an almond layer, semisweet chocolate, and stracciatella. Stracciatella is a type of gelato with irregular bits of chocolate in it.

I go running when I have to. When the ice cream truck is doing sixty. ~ Wendy Liebman

However, around the United States, most spumoni will include a cherry layer with cherry bits, a layer of pistachio ice cream, and a layer of chocolate. Other varieties include hazelnut, vanilla, strawberry, pineapple, just to name a few.

Serve spumoni sliced and you will highlight its beautiful layers. It's also considered the traditional way to serve the ice cream dessert. However, the ice cream lends itself to being scooped, too. When first seeing spumoni, it looks a lot like Neapolitan. Minus the added fruits and nuts, the two ice creams are very similar. In fact, spumoni inspired the Neapolitan. It also inspired cakes, cookies, and other recipes as well.

What were high heeled shoes originally created for?

High-heeled shoes were first worn in the 10th century as a way to help the Persian cavalry keep their shoes in their stirrups. Since then, men's heels have gone through varied cultural meanings: symbolizing high social stature, military prowess, refined fashionable taste, and the height of 'cool'.

Earl Weber

The Jackson Brewing Company, affectionately known as Jax Brewery, wasn't just another beer maker—it was a cornerstone of New Orleans' vibrant history, shaping the culture and flavor of the South from 1890 to 1974. Nestled in the heart of the French Quarter, this brewery stood as a symbol of resilience and innovation, a testament to the unyielding spirit of its founder, Lawrence Fabacher.

In 1890, Fabacher, a visionary entrepreneur with a knack for brewing and a deep love for his city, established the Jackson Bohemian Brewery. Inspired by the fierce legacy of Andrew Jackson and the historic Jackson Square, the brewery soon adopted the name Jax Beer. Under Fabacher’s bold leadership, Jax Brewery grew into a titan of industry, becoming the largest brewery in the Southern United States at its peak.

As the brewery flourished, it wasn’t without challenges. The dark days of Prohibition loomed over the country, bringing many breweries to their knees. Yet, Jax Brewery stood strong, one of the few to weather the storm alongside its local rival, Dixie Brewery. The post-Prohibition era saw Jax not only surviving but thriving, with a legal skirmish in 1935 marking its territorial ambitions. The battle over the "Jax Beer" trademark with Jacksonville Brewing Company was more than just a legal tussle—it was a clash of brewing titans. The eventual compromise divided the South into brewing strongholds, with Jax Brewery securing its dominance over the western states.

The 1940s brought expansion, fueled by a surging demand that only a brewery of Jax's caliber could meet. By the 1950s, however, the landscape had shifted. The rise of national breweries threatened Jax’s reign. But, true to its innovative roots, the company struck a deal in 1954, acquiring exclusive rights to the Jax trademark from its Florida rival. This bold move propelled Jackson Brewing Company to new heights, solidifying its place as the 10th largest brewery in the nation and the undisputed king of Southern brewing.

Yet, all great empires face their twilight. By 1974, financial pressures mounted, and Jax Brewery was absorbed by Pearl Brewing Company. The iconic Jax Beer continued to flow until 1984, when Pabst Brewing Company took the reins, blending Jax into its portfolio.

The brewery building remains a treasured landmark in New Orleans and since being redeveloped into condominiums is recognized as the crown jewel of the French Quarter. In 1999, visionary developer Earl Weber saw beyond its brick walls and brewing past, transforming the space into the premiere luxury condominiums, upscale retail shops, and fine dining establishments in the French Quarter. Today, the former brewery stands as a symbol of New Orleans' enduring spirit—a place where history meets modern elegance, and where the legacy of Jax Brewery lives on.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

An eclectic group of adults… playing six mid-pubescents, vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. [Rated: PG-13]

New Orleans: The New Orleans Jazz Museum is more than a building; it is a living embodiment of New Orleans Jazz culture and music in New Orleans. This is due to the vision of one person: Greg Lambousy, Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum.

Through Greg Lambousy and his staff’s efforts, the New Orleans Jazz Museum has become the epicenter of the New Orleans Jazz scene. From festivals like the Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival, Satchmo Summerfest, Jazz on the Balcony, Weekly free Jazz performances, and the most significant exhibits relative to New Orleans and early Jazz history presented in the correct cultural context, the City of New Orleans.

To paraphrase the great Professor Longhair, “When you come to New Orleans, be sure to go see the New Orleans Jazz Museum.”.

Presentation, 7:30 PM, August 23 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St, NOLA. Free Admission RSVP preferred to: festguide@gmail

Greg Lambousy is the Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Before accepting this position, Lambousy was Director of Curatorial Services for the National World War II Museum. He began his career at the New Orleans Museum of Art and later moved to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). During his twenty-year tenure at the LSM, Lambousy managed the institution’s collections of more than 500,000 artifacts and other historical items, directed improvements to collections storage at the New Orleans Mint, developed conservation and digitization projects across collections and within the Louisiana Historical Center archives, conducted oral histories and guided the selection and accession of materials related to the State’s history. Since 2016, as Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Lambousy has led the expansion of the Museum in programming, education, exhibitions, international relations, and the development of the Gallatin Street Records label. Visitation has increased fourfold since 2016, and revenues from grants, sponsorships, and events have funded operations, while capital programs have advanced the development of the Museum’s Performance Center and Herb Alpert Education Wing, among other aspects of the Museum’s campus

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

University of Holy Cross to hold Constitutional Carry & Self Defense Class August 29

Public confusion still swirls around Louisiana’s new firearm carry laws

New Orleans – The University of Holy Cross, in conjunction with Pierre Basic Guns, is hosting two gun safety and self-defense workshops on its Algiers campus on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to help Louisiana residents and the greater UHC community better understand the nuances of the new constitutional carry laws in the State of Louisiana and how the new laws impact their rights and responsibilities. Sponsored by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), these workshops are designed to educate the public on the legal aspects of self-defense and carrying firearms.

The workshops will be held on August 29, 2024, with two available sessions: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Both sessions will be conducted at the University of Holy Cross Moreau Center, located at 4123 Woodland Drive in New Orleans.

Each session will last approximately two hours and is open to anyone 18 years and older who wishes to deepen their understanding of this significant legal change regarding the legalities of carrying a firearm in public.

“The need for clear and accurate information is greater than ever,” says University of Holy Cross Police Chief and Director of Public Safety Marshall E. Pierre, Sr. “We are excited to host these informational workshops so our community can feel more educated and empowered about self-defense, especially around the subject of carrying firearms.”

Participants will gain valuable insights into their rights and the best practices for responsible gun ownership and self-defense. These sessions aim to empower attendees with the knowledge needed to navigate the legal landscape confidently and responsibly.

The workshops will cover critical topics such as:

  • The implications of being armed in public
  • Staying safe by avoiding danger
  • Pre-threat indicators
  • De-escalation
  • Using force
  • Seeking further training
  • Differences between carrying with a permit vs. without a permit in Louisiana

"I have conducted several of these events, and I've found that many participants are often unaware of the specifics of the law, including what constitutes a justified act of self-defense," says Pierre Basic, founder of Pierre Basic Guns. "One of the most surprising aspects for attendees is learning about the restriction on carrying within 1,000 feet of a school zone without a permit."

To register for a session or to learn more about the workshop series, please contact Pierre Basic Guns at (555) 123-4567 or visit their website at www.pierrebasicguns.com.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!
