ZECHARIAH THE PROPHET – LESSON 4
THE FOUR HORNS – KINGDOMS
Zechariah’s second night vision showed four horns. Horns represent kingdoms or nations. The prophet asked the angel what they represented.
The angel answered (Zechariah 1:18-19), “…These are the horns (empires) which have scattered Judah. (southern kingdom) Israel, (northern kingdom) and Jerusalem. (God’s holy city).”
Then in verses 20-21 the LORD showed him four “carpenters.” The angel explained that these were kingdoms appointed “to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles which lifted up their horn (nation) over the land of Judah to scatter it.” To “fray” means to fight against. “Carpenter” meant “carver” as to carve up the previous “horn” (empire) and “smith” as to forge a new empire domination over Judah.
Judah’s (and Israel’s) idolatry was punished by allowing a “horn,” a national gentile empire to conquer and rule over them and scatter them across the lands. Each of the four “horns” were deposed by another “carpenter horn” in succession until God’s work was done and Messiah comes on the scene.
Bible scholars almost unanimously agree the four horns represented Babylon (605-538 B.C.), then Persia (c. 538-c.320 B.C.), thirdly Greece (c. 320- c. 160 B.C.) and lastly Rome (c. 160 B.C. -476 A.D.). The “carpenters” would be Persia (fraying Babylon), the Greece (fraying Persia) then Rome (fraying Persia), but the “fourth carpenter” would then be a problem because they were not “frayed” until about 476 A.D. by “barbarians.” Furthermore, Rome did “scatter” them, but Messiah had come (Jesus) and Rome then “pulled together” the church starting about 312 A.D.
I believe the four “horns” were Assyria, Babylon, Persia, and Greece. The four “carpenters” would be, in order, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome.
The Assyrian empire was the largest ever up until their time, and the fiercest. They raided Israel (the northern kingdom) in 732 B.C., taking captives. They then totally conquered Israel in 722 B.C., took most of the remaining Jews captive, and scattered them among various other nations as mentioned in verse 19. They were the only empire to do that to Israel, the ten tribes of the north. The other “horns” that followed only dealt with Judah since Israel had already been scattered. Babylon, Persia, and Grecian empires impacted Judah and Jerusalem only. These three served the dual purpose of a “horn” and a “carpenter.” Rome became the fourth and final “carpenter” as it deposed the fourth “horn” Greece.
Proof of Zechariah’s accuracy as a prophet is seen in the fact that some of these nations (horns and carpenters) had not yet risen to power, yet he “saw” them.
The lesson here for us is that God has a plan for the world. He raises nations and rulers and takes down nations and rulers according to His plan, not ours. We can pray that we will be safe and protected even if our nation were to fall.
We already know from prophecy that most nations will fall to the Antichrist and a New World Order (one-world government, religion, economy, and social order). God has determined it and we cannot stop it. We can pray that it will not be in our lifetime, but God will decide that.
Just as God showed Nehemiah (and Daniel) the kingdoms, so has God also ordained the future kingdom, one evil under Antichrist, and the other one righteous under Jesus. I wish to be part of the last one! How about you?

A FADED ROSE
My husband gave me a dozen red roses on Valentine’s Day, February 14. They lasted longer than any roses that I have had. I love red roses, so it was especially nice that they lasted. One rose in particular, still is alive as I write this. He gave the roses to me three days before Valentine’s day, so they have lasted 13 days which is very unusual.
As I was looking at this beautiful rose, noticing that it has started to fade, and the red isn’t as bright as it had been, it reminds of life. As we become older, or perhaps a better word is “seasoned,” things aren’t working quite like they did when we were younger. We begin to fade in some areas. Unfortunately, many look at the “senior generation” as old, faded roses, and of little practical value anymore, but they are mistaken.
You see, time brings out the sweetest smell in the rose, but time also brings with it wisdom for those that have outlived others, like my beautiful rose. We should look to the ones that made it into their senior years and learn from them their secrets. We need to be like generations ago that treated the elderly with great respect and gleaned from their wisdom.
Don’t look at yourself as an “old-faded rose” my friends. Your life is far more valuable than that. Why not write a journal of the triumphs you have had in your life. Why not tell the story to the younger ones in your family, sharing how your faith brought you through trials and triumphs?
In the Song of Solomon, the rose of Sharon is mentioned. It represents Jesus. He as a rose, was crushed by the crucifixion, but He, through his suffering, brought the sweet aroma of salvation to each of us. Praise God!
Are we faded roses? No. We are the offspring of Jesus, the Rose of Sharon, that lives forever.

What are you breathing in? Are you breathing in righteousness? Are you breathing in love? Are you breathing in victory? Oh, my children what you take into your spirit will determine the mindset of these days. Do not let the distractions of the world cause you to breathe in distractions. Do not let the evil of this world cause you to breathe in evil. I am your breath. I am your life. I am your hope in this hour. Breathe in my word. Breathe in my peace. Breathe in my love and know that your spirit will be calmed. As Peter reached his hand out to me when he was about to sink, my hand is outstretched to you to pull you to safety. Oh, your faith has slipped a little, but I am here. I will calm the waves around you, and together we shall walk to the ship, the safe place, the harbor where you will be at rest. Come to me even though the waves are billowing. Come to me and find your strength.
In the hours ahead you must be closer to me than ever, for there will be much more turbulence, and you must be anchored in me, or you will sink. Yes, there is turbulence, but I am the peace maker. Yes, there are waves, but I am the calm maker. So, look to me and know that my hand is there to save, and not cause you to sink. I love you my child, and I am here with you, so trust that I will take you to the safe place. Trust me today for all your needs. Trust me today for the love that brings you comfort. PROPHETIC EXHORTATION
There’s many really good people growing tired and weary of even trying anymore. But right now I believe God is asking someone to try just one more time. I’m telling you that it’s not time for you to GIVE UP...But it is time for you to GET UP and move on. You can’t continue to remain stuck there in the ashes of yesterday’s broken dreams and broken promises. So come on and give it all you got. You don’t ever want loose faith in yourself or the dreams that are locked up deep inside of you. Why don’t you start now and make the decision to rekindle that small glimmer of hope...And then you go ahead and dare to believe again. You can be assured that God will help you to fully trust Him. In fact, He’s standing close by you on the sidelines of this difficult journey you’re on and He is saying to you, “You can do this”. So stop even thinking about what some folks say you can’t do and start doing what God said you were born to do. Now get yourself up from that place of disappointment and defeat; Then by faith give it another try. You can do this; And when you do just stand back and watch God turn that bad pain into great gain...And that big mess into an even bigger miracle.
