Ernest Shaw Awarded 2022 MICA Fellowship

As the latest recipient of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) Fellowship, Baltimore artist and educator Ernest Shaw attended a two-week residency at Mt. San Angelo this summer.

“My time at VCCA was both peaceful and inspiring,” says Shaw. “Being in company with so many talented creatives, in such a calm environment, is a recipe for creative success.”

Leslie Roberts
"Material Investment," curated by Leslie Roberts, The Bank, Newark, Ohio, Sept. 9- Oct. 16. This exhibition in a former Art Deco bank presents 11 artists dedicated to using materials in unconventional ways. Included are fellows Amanda Love, Ruth Jeyaveeran, Jeff Wallace, and Mandy Cano Villalobos, as well as artists Alex Paik, Alisa Sikelianos-Carter, Lisha Bai, Sean Desiree, Tracey Goodman, and Vadis Turner. This project was conceived at VCCA in January 2022.
Lauren Hilger
In Morality Play, Lauren Hilger forges a restless path between the impressionable folly of youth and the boundlessness of individual becoming. A motley bildungsroman of fierce imagination, Morality Play reveals, and revels in, the paradox inherent in its title, angling for a tender virtue in the sensuousness of words.

Carol Mitchell
"I attended VCCA in August, 2021. My residency was a great success and instrumental in my acquiring an agent and subsequently, a publisher for my debut novel which will be released in Fall 2023. Stay tuned!"

Elizabeth Winthrop Alsop
"Thrilled to announce the publication of my memoir, DAUGHTER OF SPIES: Wartime Secrets, Family Lies, Regal House, October 25, 2022"

Andrea Carter Brown
"Andrea Carter Brown's poetry collection September 12, written largely at VCCA and published for the 20th anniversary of 9/11, was recently awarded the 2022 IPPY Silver Medal in Poetry from the Independent Publishers Group. Last spring she did a reading tour of the Midwest, where she read in Des Moines with Debra Marquart, a VCCA Wachtmeister Award recipient. This September, she will be reading in NYC on 9/10 at 3 pm at the Jefferson Market Library with KC Trommer and Scott Hightower and on 9/11 in the series "A Persistence of Cormorants" on the Brooklyn waterfront with Dennis Nurkse, Sarah Arvio, and Carol Rosenstock. She would be thrilled to see friends from her many happy and productive residencies at VCCA - in Virginia and France."
