On these evenings of the Lenten season we use Holden Evening Prayer (Vespers) for our worship. Evening Prayer begins with the Service of Light. We conclude with a sung litany – a prayer which is wide ranging in its subject matter.
The word Lent comes from the middle English
, which means springtime. In the church, Lent is a season of preparation and penitence, but more than that, it is a journey from death to life. As we move toward the holiest week of the year, Lent is a time in which we can live into the reality of God’s promised grace offered into our experience of life’s brokenness. While we make this spiritual journey, we watch as the world around us begins to break into new life.
