Giving Dominican Furniture to a Good Home |
|
Housing Forward, a nonprofit serving people experiencing housing instability, was happy to pick up 24 wheeled chairs from Dominican’s furniture give-away. The chairs will be used in the agency’s conference room. We’re happy to see the chairs go to a good cause!

Travel Advisory Reinstated
Given a surge in COVID-19 cases, the Chicago Department of Public Health has added three states--Florida, Louisiana and Nevada--as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands--to its Travel Advisory list, which includes Missouri and Arkansas. Unvaccinated individuals traveling to these states are advised, but not required, to obtain a negative COVID-19 test result no more than 72 hours prior to arrival in Chicago or quarantine for a 10-day period upon arrival.
Vaccinated individuals are exempt from the Travel Advisory, which is updated weekly.

Vaccination Rates
We’re still trying to boost reporting on our community’s vaccination rates. If you have not responded to the vaccination survey, you will be receiving an email from the Wellness Center today--please respond quickly. If you need help accessing the survey, contact [email protected]. As of July 13, the following groups have responded to the survey:
- 42% of undergraduates
- 47% of graduate students
- 78% of full-time faculty and staff
- 55% of all employees (including part-time and adjuncts)

Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Clinics
Dominican is partnering with the Cook County Public Health Department to host several single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine clinics on campus.
The free vaccines will be offered on Thursday, August 5; Tuesday, August 17; and Saturday, August 28 in Parmer Hall 107 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
These J & J vaccines are available to your families and friends who are at least 18 years old. Anyone who registers for a clinic must bring a photo ID and insurance card if they have one.

Glena Temple is inviting Dominican faculty and staff to her home, 1326 Park Avenue, River Forest, for an informal open house on either Wednesday, August 4 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. or on Thursday, August 5 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Cultural Center for Liberation Dialogue
The last of the CCL’s Summer Dialogue Series will be offered on Wednesday, August 11 at 2:30 p.m. Sara Furlette-Koski, director of TRIO Support Services, and Jenissa Nino, Student Success and Engagement coordinator, will share best practices and culturally engaging advising techniques for serving Non-Hispanic students at Dominican, an HSI.

Dominican Receives Diversity in Business Award
Dominican is a recipient of the Daily Herald Business Ledger’s inaugural Diversity in Business Awards. The university is the only educational institution to be included among 18 Chicago and suburban award recipients, including Bank of America, Comcast, and Zurich NA.
Honorees will be celebrated during a virtual reception on August 12.

Juneteenth Holiday
Dominican will commemorate Juneteenth by making it an official paid holiday, starting next year. Because June 19 falls on a Sunday in 2022, the university will recognize the holiday on Monday, June 20.
Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the U.S. by commemorating the day in 1865 (June 19) when federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX to ensure the freedom of all enslaved people—2 ½ years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The day became a federal holiday this year.

Student Writes Editorial on International Relief Aid
Natalia Prato, Class of 2023, wrote an editorial in the Wednesday Journal urging Illinois Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth to push for increasing international relief funding in the 2022 fiscal year. A psychology and Spanish major and an intern in University Ministry, Natalia is a member of Catholic Relief Services.
In her editorial, Natalia insists that robust funding for international assistance will demonstrate dedication to justice and reestablish the U.S. as an influential global leader. Read Natalia’s editorial on DU Connect.

Hugh McElwain: Why the Sudden Interest in Critical Race Theory?
Hugh McElwain, emeritus professor of theology, writes in an essay about the current interest in Critical Race Theory and the effect of the New York Times’ “Project 1619,” both of which examine how racial oppression has shaped the fabric of the U.S. He commends Dominican for accepting the challenge of “wrestling with the demanding triad of diversity, equity and inclusion.” You can read Hugh’s essay on DU Connect.

DU Network Community
University Advancement invites all faculty and staff to join the DU Network, the official platform for the Alumnae/i Association. Since launching earlier this month, more than 490 people have joined the network to gain access to the opt-in alumnae/i directory, job board and more.

Physician Assistants Raising Funds for School Supplies
Cohort 5 of the physician assistant program is raising funds to buy new school supplies for the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago. The cohort’s goal is to purchase 24 backpacks, 100 notebooks and three Amazon Fire 7s. Donations accepted until August 26. Contact Kailey Hoel at [email protected] for information.

Arts & Minds Podcast: “Why do we Forget: Using Sea Slugs to Understand Memory”
Irina Calin-Jageman, professor of biosciences, and Bob Calin-Jageman, professor of psychology and director of Dominican’s neuroscience program, shared the results of their research with sea slugs as part of University Advancement's “At Home with Dominican” series presented via Zoom last fall. The Calin-Jagemans discussed how they use Aplysia californica (sea slugs) to help determine why neural connections are lost and, in some cases, regained.

Ramiro Atristain-Carrión Receives International Award of Merit |
Ramiro Atristain-Carrión, adjunct instructor in finance and executive-in-residence, received the International Award of Merit from Illinois Institute of Technology, where he earned his MBA. Ramiro was commended for his international humanitarian work with CLESF, an organization he founded in 2006 to provide surgery to correct lower extremity deformities on children and adults in impoverished countries.

Alumna Scores $60,000
on Jeopardy
Jen Jazwinski, MLIS '08, youth services librarian at Algonquin Public Library District, won almost $60,000 in her recent stint on Jeopardy. Because of COVID-19, she filmed her episodes without a studio audience found it difficult to keep secret the results of her rounds
Although she didn't get as far as she had hoped, Jazwinski referred to her experience on the game show as "so stinking fun." You can read more about her competition on DU Connect.

New TV Series “Stars” Dominican
Dominican has a “starring” role in the upcoming NBC-TV series, “Ordinary Joe.”
In the promotional trailer, which is being shown during NBC’s Olympic coverage, the Cloister Walk and Quad are obvious in several scenes involving the main character. The scenes were filmed on campus last November.
The series premieres on September 20 and runs on Mondays this fall.

Daniel Born Pens Detective Story
It’s not too late for a good beach read! Daniel Born, adjunct instructor, English, has published a hardboiled detective story, Unpardonable Sins, featuring a Chicago Mennonite preacher who is trying to solve the grisly murder of a bike messenger—before the killer catches up to him. Sounds perfect!
Published under the pen name “David Saul Bergman,” the book has received good reviews and comparisons to Sara Peretsky on Amazon.

Ali Woitovich ’18, MBA ’19, and Dominick Romito ’17 made their own fireworks when they got engaged over the July 4 weekend. The two met as fellow Dominican Stars. Ali played softball all four years and Dominick played baseball. Ali, whose degrees are in marketing, is a category management analyst at Bosch Automotive Aftermarket Division. Dominick majored in biology and minored in chemistry and is currently a chemist at Nalco Chemical. They are planning a wedding in fall 2022. Congrats to the happy couple! |
