Everyone loves a good story. When our girls were little, they loved having a storybook read to them – or, even better, for someone to tell them a story as they drifted off to sleep. For us parents, those same stories served as points of lasting connection with our children, especially when we read the books that had worn edges and torn pages -- ones that our own parents had read to us back in the day. Even older adults never stop cherishing the stories that remind them of good things that stand the test of time: heroic deeds, shared values, and the calming satisfaction of a fairy-tale ending. I like to think that this is why Christ did his most powerful and memorable teaching through parables. God knows, as we do, that no matter how old we may be, everybody loves a good story.

This seems to be especially true around Christmastime. When I was a child, one of my favorite holiday stories was the scratch-and-sniff book The Sweet Smell of Christmas. I still have the copy that was given to me when I was just 13 months old. After so many years, even the most intense scratching could not make the green patch on the tree

smell like pine or the faded orange dot smell like the fresh piece of fruit in Little Bear’s stocking. Even so, our daughters loved the story as much as I had. Fortunately for us, I discovered that the book was still in print. It brought me great joy to buy a “fresh” copy for them to cherish… and possibly pass on to their own children someday.

In the coming weeks, Larchmont Avenue Church will be embracing the fact that a good story can bring generations together. No matter our age, shared stories stir our emotions, reinforce valuable lessons, and deepen our connections with the people we love.

Beginning on Sunday, November 30th, and continuing through Christmas Eve, we will dedicate time in each worship service to a beloved story of the season. While children will be invited up to the front of the church to listen, we are confident that there will be something to learn and something to love for people of all ages.

As a bonus, each service will also include an additional story about a beloved yuletide carol. Even if we have sung a tune our entire life, knowing the details of how, when, and why the song was written -- and perhaps a little something about the person or people who originally put the notes and words together – can deepen the way that song speaks to us.

It is our prayer that these “Stories of the Season,” coupled with a “Story Behind the Song,” will help bring the generations of your family together around the enduring messages and feelings of Christmastime.
