Backpack Blessings &
Back to School Pool Party!

T hanks to everyone who participated in our recent Back to School events : the Backpack Blessings two weeks ago and the Back to School Pool Party this past Sunday. And a special thanks to the Boswells -- Cynthia, William, Liam, and Asher (and their dog, Matilda) -- for hosting the Pool Party again this year! We are glad to have another year of Children's Ministry at Saint Andrew's off to such a great start.

In order to keep this ministry going, however, we need additional volunteers to help with teaching Children's Sunday School and to assist our nursery coordinator, Amanda, in the Nursery. If you are able to do either, please e-mail Father Gary to let him know that you can help us continue to serve the growing number of children in our parish and their parents.
Announcements
Burial Office for Elaine Shamlin
Friday, August 30 | 2:00 PM | At Robinson Funeral Home | Fr. Gary Eichelberger Presiding
We ask your prayers for the departed, and for the consolation of those who mourn.

As noted in a prior e-mail to the parish, our beloved sister in Christ, Elaine Shamlin, died last week. Our prayers for the repose of her soul and for the consolation of all of her family, especially her husband, Gary, and her two adult children, Brett and Jacqueline, continue.

The Burial Office will be said for Elaine at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 30, 2019, at Robinson Funeral Home (1425 Powdersville Road, Easley, SC). Father Gary will preside. A visitation with the family will follow immediately after the service at Robinson Funeral Home. A private family committal will be conducted later that day at Robinson Memorial Gardens.

If you would like to send a note of condolence to Gary, Brett and Jacqueline, their mailing address is: 324 Warrington Drive, Easley, SC 29642.

May her soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. (BCP, p. 502)
Please note:
Parish Office will be closed Monday, September 2,
in observance of Labor Day.
West End Association Meeting | Tuesday, September 3 | 6:30 PM
Saint Andrew’s will be hosting the monthly West End Neighborhood Association meeting. All are invited.
First Wednesdays Men’s Group | September 4 | 7:30 AM | Church
All men are invited for this 20-minute prayer service with Morning Prayer, Rite II. We’ll be using the Book of Common Prayer as our guide rather than a printed program, so “brush up” on the Prayer Book. Afterwards, by special request, we’ll head down to Eggs Up Grill on Augusta Street for breakfast.
Sunday School Kick Off | Sunday, September 8 | 9:30 AM
This year we will continue with our Hearts Alive lectionary-based curriculum for our children’s classes. We are looking for more children's Sunday School volunteers so, if you are interested in serving as Sunday School teacher, please let Father Gary know.
Save the Date: Rebuild Upstate | Saturday, October 19
8 AM - 4 PM
Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church is teaming up with Rebuild Upstate for our second project to create healthy, sustainable home environments for disabled, low-income, and elderly people. Any skill level and all ages are welcome from simply helping with snacks at the site, interviewing workers and families and taking photographs for the Saint Andrew’s newsletter, to helping with the actual construction work. You may work for as long as your schedule permits on the work day. Click on the sign up link below to let us know that you plan to help!
New Offering!
Saint Andrew's Knitting Ministry
We are hoping to form a new ministry at Saint Andrew's to support our Pastoral Care Ministry thanks to the initiative of parishioner Joyce Ford. Joyce is seeking other knitters who are interested in making prayer shawls, lap robes, and Episcopal rosaries which will be blessed and brought to those receiving pastoral visits. Please contact Joyce Ford by e-mail or by phone at 864-901-4446 if you would like to learn more.
Fall Newcomers’ Gathering at Rector’s House
Sunday, September 15 | 5-7 PM | 107 W Earle St
All newcomers, both recent visitors and new members, are invited to a casual get together with the vestry, Father Gary, and leaders of various church ministries. Please RSVP to office@standrewsgreenville.org
Upcoming Safe Church Training Opportunities
Thanks to all of the parishioners who attended Safe Church training at Christ Church School last week! We hope that many more parishioners will take the training in the weeks ahead. Safe Church training is important for anyone volunteering in children's ministries, or doing any lay ministry, such as lay eucharistic visitors, involving potentially one-on-one ministry within the parish. We encourage all parishioners, especially those in positions of leadership - such as vestry members and other ministry area leaders, to get Safe Church certified.

There are several upcoming Safe Church training sessions being offered at Christ Church Episcopal School (245 Cavalier Drive, Greenville) on the following dates:
  • Thursday, September 5, 12 Noon to 3 PM
  • Sunday, September 22, 1:30 to 4 PM

Please make sure to let our parish office know if you sign up for one of these classes. (We are also working to set up a training session at Saint Andrew's in the near future.) More info on Safe Church Training here.
Columbarium Niches Available
Saint Andrew’s has a limited number of spots in our columbarium still available for purchase. The cost is $2200 which may be paid in installments. Please contact the office if you would like more information.
Parking Update
With the opening of the Homewood Suites parking garage (across Markley Street), folks coming to Saint Andrew’s now have another parking option for evening or weekend worship or other church events. Thus, on evenings and weekends, you can now park in the designated "permit parking only" spots in the Homewood Suites parking garage—in addition to parking in spots marked with yellow rectangles or white numbers in the Pendleton Street Baptist parking lot (adjacent to the church). Starting in July, you will need to have a Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church parking sticker on your car in order to use the permit parking (and preferably have it affixed to your rear window). The stickers are available in the Parish Office.

A reminder that you should never park in red-numbered spots in the parking lot adjacent to the church, since Pendleton Street Baptist Church has set those aside for paid hourly parking via a phone app (unless you plan to pay via the app).

Also, if you are visiting the church during weekday business hours, you should try to find street parking or use one of the available yellow rectangle spots in the adjacent parking lot.
Sunday Altar Flower and Presence Candle Dedications
New – Sign up online!
Every Sunday, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers or presence candle in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. The cost to the church for altar flowers is now $100 per Sunday, so we are suggesting that donations for dedicating altar flowers be in the range of $50 to $100 to help us cover those costs. The suggested donation for a presence candle dedication is $10.

If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall or click on the button below. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" or "Presence Candle" noted in the memo.
Service Opportunities
Sing with the Summer Choir
During the summer, music in our Sunday Masses is led by the Saint Andrew's Summer Choir, which is made up of choir members who gather on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM (and not on Wednesday evenings), to prepare the music for each Sunday 10:30 AM Mass. With this limited time commitment the Summer Choir is an excellent opportunity for prospective new members of the choir to "try us out" for a Sunday or two (or more). We always need additional singers--especially altos--to reinforce our sections, so please consider joining the Summer Choir. If you have questions, please contact the Parish Office--or just show up on Sunday morning!
Sunday Coffee Hour Refreshments
We are blessed to be a growing parish, and one of the ways that we offer hospitality to our many visitors is through our coffee hour after the 10:30 AM mass every Sunday. Please consider signing up for a Sunday on one of the sign up sheets hanging on the parish bulletin board.
Nursery During 10:30 AM Mass Every Sunday
Staff member Amanda Abreu oversees our Sunday morning nursery during the 10:30 AM Mass. Each week, we need at least one parish volunteer to serve with Amanda as our second nursery caregiver. If you have gifts for working with infants and young children--and have “Safe Church” training, we could use your help! If you are interested, please e-mail Amanda
Feed Thy Neighbor on Saturday Mornings
Feed Thy Neighbor is a cooperative effort of the Episcopal community in Greenville. Parish volunteers from Saint Andrew’s, Saint Peter’s, Saint James and Christ Church feed the homeless each Saturday from 7:30 to 8:30 AM in the Saint Andrew's Parish House. The Third Saturday of the month is Saint Andrew's particular responsibility. Come and join us! Set-up and cook team start at 6:30 am. Clean up team start at 8:00 am. Individuals interested in this ministry opportunity, please contact the office at 235-5884.
