NATIONAL ABSURDITY DAY
On November 20th, National Absurdity Day reigns supreme. Oddness and weirdness take over. We're not sure why, but it does.
Throughout history, bizarre occurrences mark the calendar. It may seem absurd today to send your child cross country by airplane, but people do. There's a process, attendants, an adult on the other side waiting to retrieve the precious package. When the postal service first launched in 1913, children falling within the shipping weights were sent cross country by parcel service. Mailed babies were shipped off to Grandma's house, some for as low as 15 cents plus insurance.
This day was created as a day to recall and note some of the entirely off-the-wall and ridiculous things in history, in our country, and in our lives.
Absurdity Day is also a day to have fun and do crazy, zany, and absurd things. Use the day as an excuse to let out the silly antics hidden inside them. You can do things you have wanted to do that make absolutely no sense at all, and it will be okay because you will be celebrating this National Day.

What Is A Yellow Submarine, Anyway? 10 Colorful Songs Explained
Published on November 17, 2024
Credit: Icons8 Team
Music is a powerful tool that explicitly evokes all kinds of emotions. Colors, on the other hand, have a more subtle way of arousing feelings. Various theories have been developed to study the psychology behind colors and they all agree that they can be as powerful as music. So imagine what happens when you put those two things together. "Back to black" takes you right to the dark, low moments of life, while "Yellow Submarine" can already make you feel cheerful, doesn’t it?
Join us as we explore ten songs that have used colors to further express their messages.
1Purple Rain
Credit: Alexander A.
The first item in our list not only blends colors and music but also combines multiple music styles: rock, R&B, gospel, and orchestral music. Only Prince could have done it!
Purple Rain is a song from 1984, part of the album of the same name, written and performed by Prince with his backing band, The Revolution.
Now, what does it mean? Prince himself explained that it is a reference to the sky and it represents letting your faith guide you to be with the one you love, even when it seems impossible. Quite a profound start, isn’t it?
2Yellow Submarine
Credit: 2H Media
Songs, lyrics, and music are filled with individual interpretations which can vary greatly. Yellow Submarine by The Beatles is quite representative of that. The song, written by the English band as part of their album Revolver in 1966 was subject to opinions and interpretations from the very beginning.
Some deemed it empty of meaning, while teenagers of the time embraced it to create their own chants of protest. And some even take it as a metaphor for how The Beatles perceived themselves as prisoners of their own fame. Whatever we take as the truth, nobody can deny it is a great song.
3Back To Black
Credit: Volkan Olmez
Back to Black was written by English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse in 2006 and instantly became an international success. Considering how short and troubled Winehouse’s life was, critics consider this song the purest expression of her complex mind.
It is her signature song and describes the difficult time she was going through at the time. Black is the color that best reflects how lonely life can get and how devoid of hope a person can get. Even in the most tragic ending, Winehouse still resonates with our society through this iconic song.
4Brown Eyed Girl
Credit: Ernesto Norman
Just another song that belongs in the greater leagues as it’s in the Grammy Hall of Fame, among other achievements.
Released in 1967,Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison describes, naturally, a romance of the past in the most nostalgic way. Innocence, youth, and happy memories are all implied in the lyrics and the upbeat rhythm completes the picture it paints.
5Blue Hawaii
Credit: Lo Sarno
Many songs, like this one, are written specifically for film productions. Blue Hawaii for example, was written in 1937 by Leo Robin and Ralph Rainger for a film called Waikiki Wedding.
However, that is not the only film featuring it, as it was so successful, that it received several covers in the following years. Probably, the most famous one was performed by Elvis Presley in the namesake film of 1961.
The color of the ocean and that dreamy location set the scene in a rather straightforward way and it makes us wish we were there, right?
6Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Credit: Victor Li
It is not uncommon to see hints of autobiographical notes in songs. Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road by Elton John and Bernie Taupin is said to contain elements from the latter’s childhood on the farm in Lincolnshire.
Whatever the truth is, this ballad reflects on the hardship behind fame and how the author longed for a simpler, more genuine life, away from the glamour.
Regarding Elton’s career, many critics go as far as saying this is one of his best songs, and the records it broke prove it!
7Red Red Wine
Credit: Kym Ellis
You may know Red Red Wine by UB40, but Neil Diamond originally wrote and performed this song in 1967.
Part of his second studio album, Just for You, the lyrics are easily relatable: Haven’t we all gone through a time when we thought a cup of red wine was somehow a way to forget about our troubles? Neil Diamond surely felt that when he wrote this song.
UB40 might have found it appealing as they re-recorded it 20 years later, which ultimately led to an overwhelming success for them.
8Paint It, Black
Credit: Kilian Seiler
We don’t need to describe The Rolling Stones success, an over-40-years career speaks for itself. Among its many hits, Paint It, Black is the one that belongs in our article.
Originally writtenby Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the song explores themes of grief and despair. It is narrated from the point of view of a person who lost their loved one and wants everything in black to match their mood. It is worth mentioning that, as with most iconic songs, it has received different interpretations. In any case, the topics are universal and the song is a hit still today!
9Pink Cadillac
Credit: Clem Onojeghuo
Musicians don’t always have to resort to black to express intense feelings. When the experience needs to be energetic and powerful, other colors get to play. That was what Bruce Springsteen was thinking when he wrote Pink Cadillac in 1984.
Romantic attraction, desire, escapism, and more topics of the sort have raised some controversy around the meaning, but that wasn’t enough to keep it from the Billboard chart for 14 weeks straight.
10Yellow
Credit: Alexey Lin
The new millennium brought amazing things and Coldplay the British band was one of them. Included as the second single of their debut album Parachute, the song gave the band its first top-five hit in the United Kingdom.
But that wasn’t it, thanks to this song, Coldplay reached international fame and popularity which only kept growing and growing. More than two decades later, Yellow and the topic of love and devotion still resonate with the crowds.

Tommy's Cuisine, NOSH will close. 2 new restaurants to replace them in Warehouse District
Owners of nearby restaurant expanding with two concepts.
BY IAN MCNULTY
Last year two new restaurateurs took a big step by opening a large restaurant built around small plates. Now, they’re preparing to open a pair of connected restaurants, taking over a well-known name in the Warehouse District dining scene.
Tommy’s Cuisine and the related New Orleans Social House, or N.O.S.H., will close in about a week.
Tommy’s will become a modern French bistro while N.O.S.H. will become an oyster bar and wine bar, both from chef Farrell Harrison and manager Brian Weisnicht.
They weren’t yet ready to announce the names for the two concepts. The oyster bar is slated to open first, likely in January, with a focus on natural wines and Gulf seafood. The bistro will follow in February.
Brian Weisnicht (left) and chef Farrell Harrison developed New Orleans restaurant plates, where tapas style dishes are the focus. (Staff photo by Ian McNulty, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune)
The two run plates, the restaurant a few blocks away in the Cotton Mill building.
“We’re excited, it’ll give us a chance to bring on a lot of talented people we wouldn’t be able to otherwise,” said Weisnicht.
Tommy’s (746 Tchoupitoulas St.) was first opened in 2003 by namesake Tommy Andrade, serving a combination of Italian and French Creole cuisine. He later opened Tommy’s Wine Bar (752 Tchoupitoulas St.) next door, and the two businesses are connected by a passage. You could start your evening at the bar or return after dinner.
In 2016, Andrade sold both the restaurant and wine bar to Creole Cuisine Restaurant Concepts, along with a third restaurant, Tomas Bistro, just across Tchoupitoulas Street (that is now an event space called the Gallery, which is not part of this new deal). The wine bar changed to N.O.S.H., an upscale lounge, in 2017.
Marv Ammari, CEO of Creole Cuisine Restaurant Concepts, said he’s been impressed by the management style and vision he’s seen from Harrison and Weisnicht.
“They came to us as young, strong restaurateurs, they’re business smart and they want to grow,” Ammari said. “The Tommy’s era is over, it’s about passing the torch to a younger generation.”
He said his company is focused on growing concepts that can expand, namely the Boulevard American Bistro brand, which recently opened its fourth location nearby.

City of New Orleans and Downtown Development District Receive Dual Safe Streets and Roads for All Awards to Advance Comprehensive and Supplemental Traffic Safety Planning
NEW ORLEANS —The City of New Orleans announces today that the Downtown Development District and the City, through the Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Office of Resilience & Sustainability (ORS), have each been awarded grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Planning Program. Funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act/Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (IIJA/BIL), these two grants represent a collaborative step forward in addressing traffic safety challenges and creating safer streets for all New Orleanians.
“These two grants exemplify our commitment to creating safer, more sustainable streets while advancing New Orleans’ Climate Action Plan,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “By addressing critical safety issues, like nighttime visibility and multimodal access in our downtown core, we’re reducing emissions and building a city where everyone can move safely and efficiently. This is a crucial step toward a resilient and equitable future for all New Orleanians.”
“These awards represent a significant step for safer, more equitable transportation in New Orleans,” said Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (LA-02). “Totaling over half a million dollars in awards, this funding will create safer traffic in the Central Business District and enhance roadway lighting across the city. These awards, and the millions of additional funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, will decrease the traffic fatalities that disproportionately impact our most vulnerable communities. I’m proud to have championed the laws that made these projects possible and will build a safer, more accessible, and more sustainable New Orleans for everyone.”
The $360,000 New Orleans Roadway Lighting Safety Supplemental Plan grant will allow the City to focus on the significant safety challenges posed by inadequate nighttime roadway lighting. With two-thirds of traffic fatalities occurring between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., the plan aims to identify priority areas for lighting improvements, recommend best practices, and outline actionable policies to reduce nighttime crashes and fatalities. This work will build on the City’s Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and will target historically disadvantaged communities that are disproportionately impacted by traffic safety issues.
"The safety of our residents on city streets is a top priority," said Rick Hathaway, Director, The Department of Public Works. "With the support of this $360,000 Safe Streets and Roads for All grant, we are taking a deliberate step toward reducing nighttime fatal crashes by identifying where street lighting infrastructure can be improved and how much funding will be needed to implement upgrades. The Department of Public Works is committed to overseeing the successful implementation of this grant, ensuring the residents of New Orleans have the visibility they need to stay safe.”
Currently, the City is engaging in pilot deployments of roadway lighting equipment with multiple vendors to test innovative products in the field. This includes integration of smart technologies and alternative energy sources with the aim of improving operations while reducing maintenance costs, allowing the roadway lighting system to more effectively deliver roadway safety benefits.
Simultaneously, the $150,000 DDD’s Supplemental Planning Grant focuses on the unique needs of the Central Business District (CBD). This project will analyze downtown-specific safety concerns, such as conflicts between pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic. The plan will aim to identify capital projects and policies to improve safety for all road users, particularly pedestrians and those with mobility impairments, while improving safe access for businesses, and addressing conflicts between curbside transit, freight, passenger, and parking zones that negatively impact that safety.
“Transportation safety is a key component to a thriving downtown,” said Davon Barbour, President & CEO of the Downtown Development District. “DDD is thrilled to receive this grant and plan for improvements that will benefit the tens of thousands of citizens who travel our streets daily.”
Together, these complementary initiatives reflect a holistic approach to addressing traffic safety across New Orleans, ensuring the benefits are felt from the heart of downtown to neighborhoods citywide. The collaborative efforts between the City and DDD demonstrate how targeted, data-driven approaches to safety planning can address citywide and localized challenges simultaneously.
These initiatives are guided by extensive community engagement and represent a significant step toward achieving New Orleans’ Climate Action Plan and Comprehensive Safety Action Plan goals. Since 2022, ORS has secured over $131 million in federal awards to implement the City’s Climate Action Plan goals.

NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE DAY
Peanut butter lovers and fudge lovers come together on November 20th to celebrate National Peanut Butter Fudge Day.
On June 16th, people across the United States celebrated National Fudge Day. Just by adding creamy or crunchy peanut butter, the celebration continues. They will have the yummy taste of peanut butter as the fudge flavor and star of the show.
Fudge originated in the United States, possibly by a happy accident. In 1886, a letter written by Emelyn Bettersby Hartridge was discovered. Ms. Hartridge attended Vassar College as a student in Poughkeepsie, New York, and the letter referred to a fudge her cousin had made. Her cousin, in Baltimore Maryland, was selling the fudge for 40 cents per pound. Ms. Hartridge obtained the recipe, and in 1888, she made 30 pounds of fudge for the Vassar College Senior Auction.
In the late 19th century, some shops on Mackinac Island, Michigan, began to produce products similar to that of the Vassar College fudge and sold it to summer vacationers. Fudge is still made in some of the original shops there today.
Two other fudge holidays on the calendar areNational Nutty Fudge Day on May 12th andNational Penuche Fudge Dayon July 22nd.

#ThrowbackThursday
to the Calutron Girls of the Manhattan Project
This photograph features one of the “Calutron Girls,” who operated complex machines called calutrons at the Y-12 Electromagnetic Isotope Separation Plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, during the Manhattan Project. The calutrons, or racetracks, used electromagnetic fields to separate isotopes of uranium, a key process in the enrichment of uranium and necessary for producing fissile material for nuclear reactions.
The Calutron Girls were largely young women, many fresh out of high school, and were recruited for this highly specialized work due to their attention to detail and manual agility. What makes this moment significant is that these women, despite having no formal scientific training, could efficiently manage the sophisticated machines.
However, even though they had a central role in operating the machinery, they were unaware of the full significance of their work. They were unknowingly enriching uranium for use in the world’s first atomic weapons.

In 1928, General Electric (GE) introduced one of its groundbreaking electric motors, a piece of technology that helped propel the industrial age forward. By this time, electric motors were already becoming an essential component in factories, mills, and other industrial settings, offering a more reliable and efficient alternative to steam engines. GE's innovations in motor design were particularly significant, as they enabled the automation of many processes, reducing the need for manual labor and making mass production more feasible. The electric motor’s ability to deliver consistent power was a game changer, helping to boost productivity across numerous industries.
The 1928 GE motor was part of the company’s broader push to lead the way in electrical innovation. As a major player in the emerging electric industry, General Electric was instrumental in shaping the future of technology and energy. With its rugged construction and long-lasting durability, the motor was built to withstand the demands of continuous operation in harsh industrial environments. Over time, GE’s electric motors became standard equipment in countless applications, from factory machinery to transportation systems, marking a major shift in the way power was harnessed and used in the modern world.
By the late 1920s, electric motors had already begun replacing earlier technologies, such as steam engines and internal combustion engines, in many sectors. The introduction of GE's 1928 motor not only demonstrated the increasing sophistication of electric technology but also highlighted the company’s pivotal role in the industrial revolution. GE’s innovations contributed to the growth of modern infrastructure, laying the foundation for the electric-powered world that would define much of the 20th century.

Hundreds of events throughout France will be held with fireworks, music, and, of course, tastings, as “tout le monde” vie to sample the current batch of Beaujolais Nouveau - light, fruit-driven wines made with barely fermented Gamay grapes that are best consumed as soon as possible - literally. But, never fear, there are 3 different quality levels of Beaujolais above Nouveau and these are the ones we get excited about!
The entry-level wines that are simply labeled Beaujolais, are made from grapes grown throughout the Beaujolais region, mainly in the south. These also tend to be on the fruit-forward side and are meant to be enjoyed in the first year or two after the vintage. Beaujolais-Villages wines are based on Gamay grapes that were grown in the northern part of the Beaujolais region, specifically 38 permitted villages. And Cru Beaujolais are grown in any of ten specific northern locales whose typically granitic soils (though they are far from uniform in composition and character) can produce the most age-worthy and complex of all red wines from Beaujolais. So, needless to say, the least expensive wines generally come from the south, and the more expensive and age-worthy wines come from the north. And if this was all you learned about Beaujolais, you’d know enough to dive in and start learning by tasting - but as always goes with wine, a lot of the fun is in the details.
We are here to help with those details as we taste different wines from the 3 categories and talk about the terroir that makes them special. What is Beaujolais Blanc? What is the difference between a village-level wine and a cru? What's the stylistic difference between one Cru and another?? David Sobiesk will present as we learn about one of our favorite regions and pick out some of the best wines ever to pair with your holiday meals! The event is sold out but you can join our waitlist here, Gamay
Learn a little, drink a little, and have some fun with us!

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 25
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
