NATIONAL FRIED SCALLOPS DAY

Right at the beginning of National Seafood Month, National Fried Scallops Day serves up a seafood dish enjoyed across the country. October 2nd each year brings scallop fans together to celebrate their favorite dishes.

The word scallop refers to the common name applied to many species of marine bivalve mollusks in the family Pectinidae. Every ocean in the world provides habitat for these mollusks, too.

In fact, many areas of the world prize scallops as a food source. The name scallop applies to the meat of the scallops when it is used as seafood. The tender meat is harvested in a variety of sizes. Larger medallions grill deliciously over an open flame. Smaller scallops pair nicely in soups or pasta. However, this tender and prized meat requires very little season and often takes center stage of a meal.

Like many types of seafood, cooks should be careful not to overcook. The meat becomes tough and rubbery. However, when cooked to just done, the meat is melt-in-your-mouth tender. In the United States, we consume three types of scallops: sea scallops, bay scallops and calico scallops. The flavor and versatility of scallops leads us to celebration!

JEDCO RECEIVES GRANT FUNDING TO BUILD GREATER NEW ORLEANS FOOD & BEVERAGE INCUBATOR IN CHURCHILL PARK

Facility will be the only one of its kind in the Greater New Orleans area

(AVONDALE, La) – The Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) joined federal, state, and local officials in Churchill Technology and Business Park to celebrate the first step in building a Food & Beverage (F&B) Incubator in Jefferson Parish on Wednesday. JEDCO received $4.2 million in grant funding for the design, engineering, and construction of a 15,000 square-foot facility, fulfilling a critical need in Southeast Louisiana.

The United States Economic Development Administration awarded JEDCO $2 million for the project. JEDCO also secured an additional $2.2 million in matching dollars through the Jefferson Parish Council, Louisiana Economic Development, and the JEDCO Development Corporation, JEDCO’s financing arm. Located in Churchill Technology and Business Park, the Greater New Orleans Food & Beverage incubator will include three commercial kitchens, demonstration and training space, offices, and storage space, including cold storage.

Once constructed, entrepreneurs and small business owners in the F&B industry will be able to rent dedicated space for food production. Tenants will have exclusive access to kitchen equipment, storage and loading space as well as technical support in programming, mentorship, and marketing. There will be comprehensive resources and guidance to help entrepreneurs start up and maintain their businesses in the region.

“Businesses within the food & beverage space are major economic drivers for Jefferson Parish. This project further lends to our dynamic economic landscape and directly aligns with our focus on growing the Culinary Products industry, a major targeted cluster in the Parish’s long-term economic development strategic plan,” said JEDCO President and CEO Jerry Bologna. “Many of the area’s most iconic food manufacturers started as small, homegrown companies years ago. A regional food and beverage incubator will solidify Jefferson Parish as a destination for culinary manufacturing and innovation. More importantly, it will keep our best and brightest entrepreneurs operating in our community, creating southern Louisiana food and beverage startup success stories that can elevate Louisiana’s brand on a global scale.”

“The U.S. Economic Development Administration is proud to support JEDCO and the Food & Beverage Incubator,” said EDA Economic Development Representative Robert Peche. “EDA works closely with local communities to support place based economic growth. The Greater New Orleans Food & Beverage Incubator will drive economic growth in the region, create jobs, and support a stronger, more resilient regional economy.”

Food, beverage, and culinary-related businesses make up a billion-dollar industry in Greater New Orleans, creating nearly 7,000 area jobs and generating $578.8 million in earnings. The new food & beverage incubator project is expected to generate approximately 55 new construction and engineering-related jobs and will retain 420 F&B industry-related jobs in the region. Based on industry estimates, the project is expected to bring in more than $66.2 million in private investment.

“Louisiana’s food is the best in the world and this incubator will help keep it that way,” said United States Senator Bill Cassidy. “Chefs and caterers will use its kitchen space to serve new clients. They’ll grow their businesses and add to our culinary legacy.”

“This new facility is a testament to what partnerships at the local, state and federal level can achieve to expand and diversify the state’s economy,” said LED Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois. “The food and beverage incubator leverages one of our state’s most valuable cultural traditions to create opportunities for business innovation. That’s how you position Louisiana to win.”

Through a $25,000 USDA planning subgrant via Greater New Orleans, Inc. (GNO, Inc), JEDCO and the Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) conducted a robust Needs Assessment to determine the demand for an F&B Incubator. The organizations met with dozens of F&B companies, entrepreneurs, supply chain partners, and key industry players. The results were clear: there was a significant and critical need for commercial kitchen space and technical assistance to successfully operate and grow.

“This project will fill a significant void in the region,” said Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng. “Greater New Orleans and Jefferson Parish have long been a hub for food and beverage businesses, ranging from major manufacturers to successful startup companies. The construction of the incubator will allow us to keep serving and supporting the vibrant, innovative industry that drives much of our economic success.”

“This is a substantial win for the West Bank and will serve as a catalyst for future economic growth for the West Bank,” said District 3 Councilman Byron Lee. “On behalf of the entire Parish Council, we are honored to support such a significant economic project aimed at fueling new business and creating countless jobs, investment, and major exporting opportunities for the area in the process.”

“The GNO Food and Beverage Incubator is a foundational investment in the future of our region’s burgeoning food and beverage industry,” said Michael Hecht, President and CEO of Greater New Orleans, Inc. “As the only facility of its kind in Southeast Louisiana, this incubator will provide food entrepreneurs with the resources they need to scale and thrive in Jefferson and Louisiana. The combination of commercial kitchen space, technical support, and mentorship fills a gap in the market and strengthens the ecosystem to power one of the region’s most iconic industries.”

The Food & Beverage Incubator will serve as a key anchor tenant in Churchill Technology and Business Park, a 480-acre site ripe for development on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish. Envisioned to be a vibrant, mixed-use business destination, Churchill Park embraces resilient, sustainable design and complements the area’s recreational amenities. Churchill Park’s current tenants include JEDCO, the JEDCO Conference Center, the top performing Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy, and Delgado Community College River City Campus and Advance Manufacturing Center. At the height of development, the site will serve as a connected campus of corporate offices, research laboratories, higher education and workforce training, hotel, and residential development that blends seamlessly into the area’s natural beauty and offerings.

Construction is expected to begin in 2025.

Louisiana governor plans to call third special session to overhaul the state’s tax system

The Associated Press

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry says that he plans to call the Legislature into a special session in November, marking the third such gathering this year, with the hopes of overhauling the state’s current tax system that the Republican said is failing residents.

Landry detailed his proposed tax plan during a news conference on Tuesday, with a focus on reducing the income tax and charging sales tax for more items and services. Louisiana is the latest state in the Deep South to discuss tax changes, as Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves continues to push for his state to phase out the income tax and as Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed measures earlier this year to significantly cut income taxes.

“We, in this state, have been on the losing end of an economic game that other states are playing and beating us at today,” Landry said. “We offer an opportunity to change that playbook so Louisiana can start winning.”

According to information from the state’s revenue department, Louisiana residents currently pay a 4.25% tax rate on income $50,000 and above, 3.5% on income between $12,500 and $50,000, and 1.85% on income $12,500 and below. Landry’s proposal would eliminate income tax for those making up to $12,500 and would set a flat income tax rate of 3% of those earning above $12,500.

Landry touted the plan, saying it would “provide an immediate increase in take-home pay for every Louisiana taxpayer.” The governor said under that plan, he believes Louisiana will be on “the road to reducing or eliminating the income tax” by 2030, an idea that has been pushed by other Republican officials including State Treasurer John Fleming and Revenue Secretary Richard Nelson.

Currently, there are nine states that do not levy an individual income tax. Among those are the nearby states of Florida, Tennessee and Texas.

Landry said that while his plan does not include increasing the current rate of sales tax, he does believe the tax should be expanded to including other items and services such as lobbying, dog grooming and car washes. Currently, there are 223 sales tax exemptions, Nelson said.

“So your taxation will be driven by more about what you choose to buy, rather than by your labor,” Landry said. “I think that’s fair. I hate the income tax … a man and woman’s labor should never be owned by the government.”

While Landry’s full list of proposals, and additional details, were not immediately available, he said other changes could include repealing the corporate income tax, eliminating the tax on prescription drugs, making the partial business utility exemption permanent and “modernize our constitutional funds and property tax exemptions to give our legislature more flexibility to meet” budget shortfalls and future fiscal issues.

Louisiana faces a looming estimated $700 million budget shortfall because of the expiration of some temporary sales taxes. Officials say the shortfall could result in budget cuts that threaten teacher pay, recent education reforms, higher education and health care infrastructure.

Landry says that his tax plan would close out most of the shortfall. Additionally, he argues that it will make Louisiana more competitive with surrounding states that have seen substantial economic and population growth in recent years.

“This holistic plan is designed not only to address budget shortfalls, but to catapult Louisiana into the future with increased jobs and economic growth for years to come,” he said.

Landry said he plans on calling the GOP-dominated Legislature into a special session in November. If lawmakers pass any bills, final approval will be determined by voters in the March election.

This will be Louisiana’s third special session held this year and since Landry took office in January. The legislature gathered in January to redraw congressional boundaries that included a second majority-Black district and returned to the Capitol again in February to pass tough-on-crime policies.

Also this year, the GOP-dominated Legislature held its regular three-month-long session during which lawmakers pushed conservative priorities. Lawmakers couldn’t vote on tax measures in this year’s regular session.

The last time there were three special sessions in a year was 2018. During that time, the Louisiana Legislature spent more than $1.5 million on the sessions, with those costs including supplies, extra hours for staff, additional employees hired for the sessions and per diem and mileage for lawmakers.

City of New Orleans Announces New Dates to Register to Become Eligible to Participate in Set-Aside Program

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans recently announced the launch of the Set-Aside Program to enhance opportunities for disadvantaged business enterprises (DBEs).  The Set-Aside Program allows the City of New Orleans to allocate up to 25 percent of its contracts for specific procurement of goods, services, and construction work to socially and economically disadvantaged businesses. This initiative ensures that certified DBEs can compete for designated contracts among themselves, rather than against larger or prime contractors.

The Set-Aside Program aims to catalyze long-term growth and energize local businesses through building wealth for minority entrepreneurs and small businesses. The program also levels the playing field for DBE owners who wish to do business with the City of New Orleans, allowing them to have a fair chance.

Currently, there are 2,105 DBEs that have obtained their certification. Information regarding the Set-Aside Program has been disseminated via email to all certified DBEs. However, only a fraction have registered on the City’s BRASS database, the supplier portal that allows vendors to receive solicitations, upload invoices, set up direct deposit, and view and print payment information. The criteria to participate include previous establishment as a certified DBE and BRASS registration through the City's supplier portal.

For assistance with BRASS registration, vendors can call the Bureau of Purchasing at (504) 658-1550. In addition, staff will be on hand to assist City certified DBEs with registering on the BRASS supplier portal on the following dates:

The Continental Drifters followed their own unique odyssey: forming in Los Angeles in 1991; becoming a sort of pop and indie rock supergroup; relocating to New Orleans; and after numerous lineup changes, disbanding after almost a dozen years.

The band is back in the limelight with the release of several projects. A recently released compilation album, "White Noise & Lightning: The Best of the Continental Drifters," features some previously unreleased material. And there's a new tribute album and a book about the band, "White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story" by musician Sean Kelly, both released Sept. 27.

There's a book release event at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Euclid Records. Kelly will sign books there will be an acoustic performance by veteran Drifters Peter Holsapple, Susan Cowsill, Russ Broussard and Robert Mache. There's also a Q&A session.

Early on, the band was known for a roster of members who had established themselves with other groups. Holsapple was part of the dBs and worked with R.E.M. and Hootie and the Blowfish. Cowsill sang with her family band. Vicki Peterson became famous with The Bangles. Mark Walton played with The Dream Syndicate. Carlo Nuccio, who died in 2022, had performed with Tori Amos and Emmylou Harris. Ray Ganucheau went on to work with Tommy Malone of the Subdudes in Bature Boys.

The tribute album, "We Are All Drifters," features 25 songs from musicians including Marshall Crenshaw, George Porter Jr., Steve Wynn, R.E.M. members Peter Buck and Mike Mills, The Bangles' Debbi Peterson, Rosie Flores, The Iguanas, Mark Bryan of Hootie and the Blowfish and more.

Paul Faith originally hails from Virginia, but has been writing and performing in New Orleans for the past 13 years. Growing up listening to 90's grunge/alternative rock, emo music at the turn of the century, and the folk rock of artists like Dylan and Young, Paul aspires to write honest, expressive songs with compelling vocal melodies backed by his guitar and harmonica. Paul and his backing band, the Barstool Prophets, bring these songs to life in a performance rooted in Americana, but with an emotional, rock and roll punch. Paul released his first collection of music, entitled The Smell When it Rains, in March 2024. In addition to regularly gigging around town, Paul runs a twice-a-month songwriter night, called the "The Living Room" at Skeeta Hawk Brewery.

Lyla DiPaul has only ever had one dream; to sing and to play guitar. In 4th grade, when her older brother began to teach her to pick out songs by Taylor Swift and Green Day, Lyla knew she was hooked. Inspired and indulged by the artsy DC suburb of Takoma Park, Maryland, where she grew up, Lyla began performing original music at local festivals by the time she was 11 years old. Although passionate about songwriting, Lyla felt hesitant to pursue a career in music. A mostly self-taught musician, Lyla recalls feeling like she wasn’t good enough to make her dream a reality. It wasn’t until she entered college at Loyola University New Orleans that Lyla found confidence. "When I arrived at school I was all set to study Environmental Science. Very quickly I noticed the number of people around me who were boldly pursuing their dreams.” By her second semester, Lyla had switched her major, recruited a band, and released her first single. Since then, Lyla has been discovering what it means to survive as an independent artist. She knows that community is the only way to make it. Her new EP, Something To Lose, is a perfect example of getting by with a little help from your friends. Recorded entirely at friend and collaborator Riley English’s home studio, each song came together like pieces of a puzzle. One by one, they came to life. Something To Lose features stories from the last 4 years of Lyla’s life that she hopes people can connect with and perhaps even find themselves in.

NATIONAL PUMPKIN SEED DAY

The first Wednesday in October offers up the seasonal delight, National Pumpkin Seed Day! As the temperatures cool and the leaves turn, snack on these delicious tidbits.

Many of us have fond memories of roasting these delicious nuggets after carving the Jack o' lantern. However, we never realized just how good (and good for us) they were. Surprisingly, pumpkin seeds have been valued for their dietary and medicinal properties for thousands of years. In fact, pumpkin seeds have been traced back as far as 7000 BC, according to archeologists excavating a tomb in central Mexico.

Nutritional Powerhouse

Among other civilizations, the Aztecs and Mayans were believed to revere pumpkin seeds as an essential and powerful source of food and nutrition. As it turns out they were on to something - In comparison to other nuts and seeds, Pumpkin Seeds are one of the most nutritious plant-based foods. A quarter-cup serving alone includes an immune-boosting 17% of an adult's daily allowance of zinc and a robust red blood cell-supporting 15% of the iron needed.

This little seed also has a whopping 8.5 grams of complete plant-based protein in just 1 ounce. Ounce for ounce, that’s 2.5 times more protein than a hard-boiled egg. These flavorful bites have much more to offer including a plentiful helping of minerals with over 40% of the RDI of magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese, essential nutrients that aid in overall body function.

Pumpkin seeds without shells, also known as pepitas, provide an even better standalone snack. Pepitas are especially delicious when dry roasted. Try adding savory seasonings, too. They also make great additions to salads, oatmeal, and even ice cream. Mix them into baked goods for added crunch or to granola and bars for extra protein. Don't hesitate to elevate a savory dish to a new level by creating a pesto with pumpkin seeds.

Kodak invented Super Glue? Learn about 10 discoveries made by mistake

Published on October 2, 2024

Credit: Jarritos Mexican Soda

Inventions are often conceived through order and precision. But sometimes they’re not. As history shows, on occasion it’s the chaotic, messy moments that lead to the greatest discoveries. From accidentally boiling tea leaves in their containing silk bag to forgetting a soda outside on a freezing night, these everyday objects owe their existence to observant and creative minds who found silver linings in mishaps. Let’s look into the creation of 10 well-known products that were born on days when things went wrong.

1Teabags

Credit: Skitterphoto

People weren’t supposed to dip the small bundles of tea leaves in hot water. At least, that was not what American trader Thomas Sullivan intended in 1904 when he shipped samples of his tea to Europe in small silk bags to keep the leaves neatly separated. He hoped buyers would open the bags and pour hot water over the leaves using strainers, as was customary back then. However, many customers found that the silk bags were very practical for making tea easily.

This observation led to the development of small bags for marketing tea. Gradually, the industry evolved from silk bags to more sustainable and cheaper options. It was 30 years later that parchment paper dual-chamber bags were invented, leading to the teabags we know today.

2Champagne

Credit: Tristan Gassert

Though wine had been produced in the northern French region of Champagne since Roman times, the Champenois had a long-lasting problem: refermentation. In winter, cold temperatures would halt the fermentation process. Dormant yeast cells would reactivate with the warmth of spring, releasing carbon dioxide gas. This pressure sometimes incorporated bubbles into the drink, and at worst, caused the bottles to explode in the cellars.

Dom Pierre Perignon, a monk in the 17th century, was tasked with finding a solution to refermentation. He experimented with grape varieties and processes for making wine, which led to the erroneous myth that he invented Champagne. While he was indeed the creator of winemaking practices that are relevant today, Champagne, as we know it today, was simply the evolution of that fizzy wine, which Champenois decided, in the end, wasn’t such a bad idea.

3Brandy

Credit: Eva Bronzini

16th-century Dutch traders are credited with the invention of Brandy. Its name derives from the Dutch term for "burnt wine": brandewijn. That alone hints at an interesting story.

When wine needed to be stored to travel on long sea journeys, Dutch traders developed a heating distilling system to preserve it. The idea was to make a very concentrated version that could be rehydrated with water upon arrival. However, eventually, they noticed that this "burnt" version, when stored in wooden casks, developed a unique flavor and aroma that people enjoyed. This discovery led to different regions developing their own variations, giving rise to alternatives such as cognac and Armagnac.

4Popsicles

Credit: Taylor Heery

The creator of Popsicles was an 11-year-old, according to the company. One day in 1905, he forgot a cup of soda with a stirring stick outside on a cold night. By the next morning, he realized that the drink had frozen, but the stick made it easy to handle. Curious, he gave the frozen soda a try and liked it.

His name was Frank Epperson, and he initially called his invention as "Epsicles" and sold them locally. It wasn’t until he was an adult that he decided to patent the invention and commercialize it on a larger scale. Eventually, Epsicles were sold worldwide. The story goes that, because Frank’s children referred to them as "Pop’s sicles," the product was eventually rebranded as "Popsicles."

5Saccharin

Credit: Mathilde Langevin

According to the story, Constantin Fahlberg was enjoying his dinner after a long day working in the lab when he noticed that his bread tasted unusually sweet. He traced this quality back to a compound he had been studying earlier. He was a chemist analyzing coal tar at Johns Hopkins University, and that day in 1879 he had been handling a derivative called benzoic sulfimide.

After this discovery, aided by his mentor Ira Remsen, Fahlberg developed a synthesis of the substance he named "saccharin" (inspired by the Latin word for sugar, saccharon). The artificial sweetener soon became commercially available and was widely used during sugar shortages that occurred in World War I.

6Smoke Detector

Credit: u_rpnz0oibah

Nowadays, smoke detectors come in very compact plastic enclosures, making them easy to install in many homes. But they weren’t always the ceiling disks that we know today.

In the late 1930s, Swiss physicist Walter Jaeger was working on a device that would alert

people of poisonous gas leaks. Legend has it that, while taking a frustration break near one of his failed inventions, he lit a cigarette, and the machine detected it. The device was triggered and Jaeger realized that it could alert people of the presence of smoke. The first versions of the device were only available for industrial use until American businessman Duane Pearsall developed a battery-powered detector in 1965, practical for home use.

7Friction Matches

Credit: Ian Talmacs

In 1826, John Walker, an English chemist, accidentally invented matches while trying to create a new lighting method. He was mixing chemicals with a stick, and when he scraped the stick on the floor to clean it, the chemicals ignited, sparking the idea of lighting chemicals by friction.

He presented this concept in London and inventor Samuel Jones adopted it into the first version of friction matches. These early matches were unpredictable, often igniting with sparks and producing strong fumes. For this reason, as well as for marketing purposes, these early prototypes were known as "Lucifers" for many years.

8Super Glue

Credit: Ksenia Chernaya

In 1942, Harry Coover was an inventor at Eastman Kodak Company, where the team was trying to develop clear plastic guns to supply to Allied soldiers during World War II. They were testing the material cyanoacrylate, a compound that turned out to be incredibly durable but extremely sticky, so it was discarded.

A decade later, while reviewing his notes, Coover remembered cyanoacrylate and returned to its investigation. He quickly realized that it was a powerful substance for holding things together, without the need for pressure or heat. In the 1950s, the Eastman team marketed this product as "Eastman 910," which was later renamed "Super Glue."

9Implantable Pacemaker

Credit: falco

This is another example of life-changing technology born thanks to a machine not doing what it was supposed to. In 1958, engineer Dr. Wilson Greatbatch was trying to design equipment that would record the rhythm of the heart. He installed an incorrect resistor in the circuit and observed that the system produced intermittent pulses.

This discovery led to the design of a small device that could aid the beating of a human heart, though it took time to develop one that could be implanted. By 1958, Greatbatch and his collaborators had created a prototype that was tested on patients. The doctor spent the following decades iterating and perfecting his invention.

10X-rays

Credit: Owen Beard

We conclude with one of the most famous examples: German physics professor Wilhelm Röntgen stumbled on what he called "X-rays" by accident. Imagine experimenting with cathode rays in 1895 and suddenly noticing that a strange glow can pass through several opaque objects in your office.

In preliminary articles, Röntgen referred to this radiation as "X" to signify that its type was unknown. The label stuck even as these rays were further experimented with. Its medical relevance soon became obvious, and the first photographic plate made with X-rays was of his wife’s hand. Records say that upon seeing the image of her bones, she remarked, "I have seen my death."

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street

by: OffBeat Staff

The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.

Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.

On October 6, Nickel-A-Dance will host Duke Heitger and The Crescent City Joymakers. Heitger, a classic jazz trumpeter known for his virtuosity, has performed internationally and is a long-standing performer on the Steamboat Natchez. His band is a staple of Nickel-A-Dance and promises a night of spirited traditional jazz.

Next, on October 13, Mark Braud and His Sunday Night All-Stars will take the stage. Braud, part of the musical Brunious and Santiago families, has been a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene since his youth. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many other notable artists. His band will bring a blend of traditional jazz and contemporary flair to the series.

Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.

The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Join us here at Palmettos on Sundays from

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, September 30

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Rougarou Fest Queen Embodies Louisiana Fifolet

The Rougarou Fest is proud to announce Mrs. Courtney Bennett will reign as the 2024 Rougarou Queen.

A native of Morgan City, and a resident of Houma since 1984, Courtney has been active and involved in gymnastics, cheering, dancing, and numerous music and art events in our community. She is the mother of two awesome children, Gavin, age 13, and Laurel, age 6. She has been married for 18 years to the love of her life, Garrett Bennett.

Courtney graduated from Nicholls State University with a degree in early childhood education. With that education and her creative passion, she spent many years working with children at the preschool at her church, with events at SOLA – a local children’s theatre, and as a dancer and instructor at Paddy Danos School of Dance. Because of her realization of her love of makeup and theater, she followed her creative dream and enrolled in cosmetology! Today she’s a hairstylist at Ambiance Salon in Houma.

Continuing her dreams of designing hair and make-up and ALWAYS a fan of dress up and costuming, she became involved in Rougarou Fest with Jonathan Foret. She has been a Rougarou witch for many years dancing the streets with her sister, Megan, and her fellow hairstylist and friend, Danae. She admits that the hours they spent doing witch make-up and costumes are just as fun as the parade. The first time she saw the Rougarou parade, she knew she had to be a part of it. It’s with her fellow witchy sisters, that she haunts the streets of Houma with their German witch dance.

She is very excited and appreciative to be able to take on this creative project and represent the festival as the 2024 Rougarou Queen. She looks forward to working with her longtime friend, Jonathan Foret, and his committee and volunteers. She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy everything the festival represents and has to offer!

Her costume is inspired by the story of the fifolet. In Louisiana folklore, the "fifolet" is a supernatural creature closely related to the "will-o'-the-wisp" found in other cultures. The fifolet is believed to be a type of mischievous spirit or fairy that appears as a glowing light, often seen floating over marshes, swamps, or other eerie, dark places.

Much like the will-o'-the-wisp, the fifolet is said to lead people astray, drawing them into dangerous or confusing situations. It’s often described as a trickster that lures travelers off their paths, playing with their sense of direction and perception. In some tales, encountering a fifolet might mean you're about to face some misfortune or get lost. The lore around fifolets reflects the rich tapestry of Cajun and Creole folklore, blending elements of European, African, and Native American traditions to create unique and localized myths.

The queen would like to thank her hair stylist and makeup artist, Dustin McElroy, and all the stylists at Ambiance Salon for helping make this possible. She would also like to thank Kathy Marmillion for creating her "Rougarou Queen" sash and the staff at Chez Lili Bridal for all of their hard work and support. She appreciates Dristy Foret Photography for beautifully capturing all of the hard work and talent that went into creating the fifolet-inspired queen. Most importantly, she would like to thank her husband and kids, along with all of her family and friends, for their love and support during the preparation to be the Rougarou Queen. And lastly, she thanks Jonathan Foret and the Rougarou Fest for the opportunity!

The Rougarou Fest is a family-friendly festival with a spooky flair that celebrates the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of Southeast Louisiana. It showcases live music, cultural activities, children’s activities, Cajun food, the Krewe Ga Rou parade, and so much more. All proceeds go to the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a nonprofit organization that is revolutionizing how we think, teach and learn about Louisiana’s disappearing coast.

Each year a Rougarou Queen is selected to represent the festival at various events throughout the region. The queen is selected from our large team of volunteers by a committee of festival organizers. This ensures that our queen is aware of the details of our festival since she has been a part of bringing our event to life in previous years.

The Rougarou Queen will reign over the parade at 7PM Saturday, October 19, 2024.

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
