NATIONAL EMERGENCY NURSE'S DAY
National Emergency Nurse's Day on the second Wednesday in October recognizes the dedication of ER nurses across the nation and it takes place during Emergency Nurses Week. We take this day to say “thank you” to the emergency room nurses for their hard work, dedication, service, and commitment.
Emergency room nurses are the first people we see when we have an accident or a medical emergency. They work hard to put us at ease and eliminate pain and discomfort. As they provide unwavering care to their patients and families, their loyalty to the emergency nursing profession does not go unnoticed. The day encourages us to let them know just how important they are in keeping hospitals running smoothly.
According to the CDC, per 100 persons, 45.8 visits were recorded. Since the ER nurse will be the first to see the patient, their training means the utmost to the patient. Most ER nurses earn a degree as a Registered Nurse. Beyond their degree program, many nurses continue their training, advancing their skills and improving their knowledge of the ever-changing medical field. Some will specialize as well.
Statistics on ER nurses a difficult to find. However, there are over 3 million RNs in the U.S. workforce today.

Abrogate is the word used to describe the act of removing or abolishing something, especially by authority. It comes from the Latin word "abrogare" which means to repeal or annul. Abrogation is the act of officially and formally declaring something no longer valid or in effect. This can be done through a law, a contract, or a decision made by a higher authority. Abrogation can also refer to the complete elimination of something, like a law or a tradition. Abrogation is often done when something is deemed to be outdated or no longer beneficial. Abrogation is a powerful tool and should be used with caution. | | | |

NATIONAL MOLDY CHEESE DAY
National Moldy Cheese Day is a unique holiday that is observed each year on October 9 that celebrates delicious cheeses.
A cheesemonger is a person who specializes in cheeses, butter, and other dairy products. They may take umbrage at the ordinary person's offense of moldy cheese. Well, depending on the type of mold, of course. Some cheese molds, red or brown-tinged molds, for example, are offensive. Toss those bacteria-contaminated moldy cheeses in the garbage quickly and move along to the grey, blue, or green colored moldy cheeses in the fridge instead.
Like a sommelier pairs the best wines with meals, a cheesemonger provides expert advice on artisan cheeses for recipes, banquets, and sources for restaurants. Cheeses such as Maytag blue, Roquefort, bleu, camembert, gorgonzola, and Stilton are a few of the moldy reasons cheese lovers celebrate on this day.
Moldy cheese gets such colorful phrases. For example, the fuzzy mold on a wheel of fresh brie is called cats fur. These bloomy rind cheeses take some careful maintenance. However, the results are satisfying. Isn't the best food is a bit of a science experiment, anyway?
Gorgonzola cheese is made with three different kinds of mold spores. It's like a milder blue cheese, but gorgonzola is creamier and earthier. Toss it with pasta and mushrooms for an outstanding meal. Also, it compliments any cheese plate. Add apples and tart, dried cranberries.

LUNAR LORE
To The Moon And Back: The Stories Behind 10 Sayings Involving The Moon
Published on October 9, 2024
Credit: Mark Tegethoff
Romance, delusions, and time measurements. All of these loom behind the idioms involving the Earth’s natural satellite. The moon has been a source of inspiration for poems, stories, and songs since ancestral times, its image recurring in our language as a symbol of beauty, grandeur, and ambition. Why have we attributed so many different meanings to it? In this article, we’ll explore some well-known and some more obscure idioms involving the moon, shedding light on how they came to be and why they have persisted.
1"Once in a blue Moon"
Credit: Kiel Salazar
We all know that this phrase is used to describe events that happen very rarely. But what is a "Blue Moon"? Nowadays, we use the term to refer to the second full moon that we can see within a calendar month. Since moon cycles last about 29.5 days and months last around 30, it is unusual for a month to include two full moons. According to NASA, this phenomenon occurs once every two to three years.
The line was first used metaphorically in 1821, in Pierce Egan’s play called Real Life in London. However, this first use might have been referring to the more literal phenomenon of the moon appearing visibly blue because of atmospheric events, like fires or volcanic emissions.
2"Being over the Moon"
Credit: Javier Allegue Barros
If some of these idioms sound like they belong in an illustrated nursery book, it’s because they do. Describing someone in a state of delight as being "over the moon" began in the nursery rhyme "Hey Diddle Diddle," which first appeared in records in the 16th century.
The rhyme’s brief lyrics are cryptic, and historians can’t agree on their meaning. But the image it features of a cow jumping over the moon was memorable enough to give birth to the idiom. It became widespread in the 20th century, often used in British English to express giddy happiness or joy.
3"Shoot for the Moon"
Credit: Rakicevic Nenad
It is unclear how or when this expression originated. But we know it gained popularity in the mid-20th century, that is, during the space race era. Some believe that the saying gained momentum after the successful Apollo moon landings, as it served as a motivational slogan. The phrase is used to encourage others to accomplish great things, or to describe someone's ambition of "reaching for the moon."
A sibling expression is "shoot the moon," or "hit the moon," which refers to achieving a challenging feat. In card games, "shooting the moon" describes strategies by which players aim for high or low scores.
4"Promising the Moon"
Credit: spoot
Beware of someone who promises you the moon, be it a partner, a salesman, or a politician. The expression serves as an accusation of a charlatan or a liar pledging to accomplish extravagant or impossible acts. The use of the line dates back to at least the early 20th century, when, again, influenced by the space race, many began fantasizing about reaching the moon, exploring it, and harnessing it. Alternatives to this saying are "promising the Earth," "the world," or "the stars," each one as unattainable as the last one.
5"Love you to the Moon and back"
Credit: Mark Zamora
This one too originated in children’s literature. Born from the habit of competing for hyperbolic measurements to express the size of one’s love. "I love you to (name of a far-off place)" was already a popular construction before Sam McBratney’s book solidified this particular line.
Guess How Much I Love You was published in 1994. In it, a little hare and his parent take turns stretching their arms wider and wider to show their love for each other. Eventually, the distances start measuring from "I love you all the way down the lane as far as the river" to the little hare’s "I love you right up to the moon." After he falls asleep, the parent whispers, "I love you right up to the moon… and back."
6"Many Moons ago"
Credit: Brody Childs
The expression might be old-fashioned or theatrical, but we all understand it. As a synonym for a "long time ago," it can either refer to a daily moon or moon cycles. In either case, the expression is usually chosen to dramatically refer to a time many years in the past.
We know that, for millennia, the appearances of the moon have been used to track time. In fact, the words "moon" and "month" share very similar roots; in Proto-Germanic language, they were menon and menoth, respectively. Tracking a full moon cycle thus came to mark a full month. "Many moons ago" is a reference to an ancient way of counting days and weeks.
7"Asking for the Moon"
Credit: pics4cwolfe
This construction might be the opposite of "promising the moon." When someone is "asking for the moon," they are demanding an unachievable or some unreasonable, high-value goal. It’s used to describe impractical fantasies or whims.
Just like "promising the moon," it is a hyperbolic idiom. It might have been born in the 1800s, with slight variations. Its use can be found in Charles Dickens’ 1852 Bleak House as "crying for the moon" and in William Makepeace Thackeray’s 1860 Lovell the Widower as "wishing for the moon."
8"Hang the Moon"
Credit: Valery Sysoev
Believing that someone "hung the moon" means to see them as impressive or godlike, capable of superhuman feats, like having been the one to hang the moon. This is an expression used to describe great admiration, believing a person can do no wrong. It’s an exaggerated way of expressing high regard.
Unusual or outdated as it is, the idiom caught on in the U.S. during the 20th century. Its origin is unclear, but it was first recorded in Randolph & Wilson’s gallery of folk speech called Down in the Holler. In it, they compare the expression "she thinks he hung the moon" to "she thinks he’s God’s own cousin."
9"The Moon is made of green cheese"
Credit: Elio Santos
The resemblance between a full moon and a cheese wheel is not something that modern cartoonists invented. It’s an image that has lived in the collective unconscious for centuries, at least. The comparison was already mentioned in The Proverbs of John Heywood, dated from 1546. There, Heywood wrote the expression "to make one believe the Moon is made of green cheese." Since then, the saying has been used to accuse blatant lies or deceptions, often said with sarcasm to point out that the truth is far from what was just said.
10"Barking at the Moon"
Credit: Federico Di Dio photography
It’s also known as "howling at the moon." In both cases, it implies that some complaint or discussion is futile. The origin of the phrase is linked to folklore and the belief farmers developed that wolves and dogs tended to bark at the moon. In reality, the reason why a dog might be more likely to howl during a full moon is simply that there is more light outside, which can trigger their excitement. The expression became popular to describe the efforts of someone wasting their energy on attempts to change someone’s mind or revert a situation through words.

October 9th Celebrated History
1855
Joshua C. Stoddard obtains patent No. 13,668 for his invention of the steam calliope. The Worcester, MA inventor equipped the "steam organ" with whistles and when steam was forced through them, they played a note. He later added a keyboard. Officer Marcus Moscowicz is a small town policeman with dreams of making it to detective. One fateful night, shots ring out at the surprise birthday party of Great American Novelist Arthur Whitney and the writer is killed…fatally. With the nearest detective an hour away, Marcus jumps at the chance to prove his sleuthing skills – with the help of his silent partner, Lou. But whodunit? Did Dahlia Whitney, Arthur’s scene-stealing wife, give him a big finish? Is Barrette Lewis, the prima ballerina, the prime suspect? Did Dr. Griff, the overly-friendly psychiatrist, make a frenemy? Marcus only has a short amount of time to find the killer and make his name before the real detective arrives…and the ice cream melts!

Croatia has a rich wine culture that stretches back over 2,500 years, rooted in ancient traditions passed down from the Illyrians, Greeks, and Romans. In recent years, Croatian wines have gained international acclaim for their quality and unique indigenous grape varieties, shaped by the country's diverse geography and climate. The country's wine regions are broadly divided into four key areas: Dalmatia, Istria and Kvarner, Slavonia and the Danube, and the Croatian Uplands. Each region offers its own distinctive characteristics, influenced by their varying climates, soils, and grape varieties.
Croatia is home to more than 130 indigenous grape varieties, many of which are unique to the country. Beyond Plavac Mali, Malvazija Istarska, and Graševina, other notable varieties include Vugava, a rare white grape from the island of Vis that produces full-bodied wines with tropical fruit notes, and Debit, a versatile white grape from Dalmatia used for both dry and sweet wines. Bogdanuša, from the island of Hvar, is another indigenous white variety traditionally associated with religious celebrations.
The styles of Croatian wines are as diverse as the regions themselves, ranging from refreshing dry whites to rustic, robust reds and even unique dessert wines - and recently, orange wines have been gaining popularity. Croatia’s rising reputation as a wine destination is enhanced by its beautiful wine regions, historic vineyards, and small, family-run wineries. Wine tourism, particularly in Istria, is thriving, with visitors exploring wine roads, sampling local food pairings, and visiting ancient vineyards set against breathtaking landscapes. This blend of tradition and innovation is helping Croatian wines make their mark on the global wine stage.
Sara Sparks from Lirette Selections will host this fun and informative tasting. Lirette Selections has made a big commitment to Croatian wines and has the largest portfolio in the state. We hope you'll join us! You can sign up here, Croatia

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street
by: OffBeat Staff
The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.
Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.
Next, on October 13, Mark Braud and His Sunday Night All-Stars will take the stage. Braud, part of the musical Brunious and Santiago families, has been a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene since his youth. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many other notable artists. His band will bring a blend of traditional jazz and contemporary flair to the series.
Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.
The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, September 30
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

This year adds fantastic venues: The Manship Theater in Baton Rouge, and The 100 Men Hall in Bay St. Louis. Guests this year are Gavino Loche from Sardinia, Italy, Adrian Raso from Guelph, Canada, Layla Musselwhite, and The New Orleans Guitar Masters with John Rankin, Jimmy Robinson and Cranston Clements.

Rougarou Fest Queen Embodies Louisiana Fifolet
The Rougarou Fest is proud to announce Mrs. Courtney Bennett will reign as the 2024 Rougarou Queen.
A native of Morgan City, and a resident of Houma since 1984, Courtney has been active and involved in gymnastics, cheering, dancing, and numerous music and art events in our community. She is the mother of two awesome children, Gavin, age 13, and Laurel, age 6. She has been married for 18 years to the love of her life, Garrett Bennett.
Courtney graduated from Nicholls State University with a degree in early childhood education. With that education and her creative passion, she spent many years working with children at the preschool at her church, with events at SOLA – a local children’s theatre, and as a dancer and instructor at Paddy Danos School of Dance. Because of her realization of her love of makeup and theater, she followed her creative dream and enrolled in cosmetology! Today she’s a hairstylist at Ambiance Salon in Houma.
Continuing her dreams of designing hair and make-up and ALWAYS a fan of dress up and costuming, she became involved in Rougarou Fest with Jonathan Foret. She has been a Rougarou witch for many years dancing the streets with her sister, Megan, and her fellow hairstylist and friend, Danae. She admits that the hours they spent doing witch make-up and costumes are just as fun as the parade. The first time she saw the Rougarou parade, she knew she had to be a part of it. It’s with her fellow witchy sisters, that she haunts the streets of Houma with their German witch dance.
She is very excited and appreciative to be able to take on this creative project and represent the festival as the 2024 Rougarou Queen. She looks forward to working with her longtime friend, Jonathan Foret, and his committee and volunteers. She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy everything the festival represents and has to offer!
Her costume is inspired by the story of the fifolet. In Louisiana folklore, the "fifolet" is a supernatural creature closely related to the "will-o'-the-wisp" found in other cultures. The fifolet is believed to be a type of mischievous spirit or fairy that appears as a glowing light, often seen floating over marshes, swamps, or other eerie, dark places.
Much like the will-o'-the-wisp, the fifolet is said to lead people astray, drawing them into dangerous or confusing situations. It’s often described as a trickster that lures travelers off their paths, playing with their sense of direction and perception. In some tales, encountering a fifolet might mean you're about to face some misfortune or get lost. The lore around fifolets reflects the rich tapestry of Cajun and Creole folklore, blending elements of European, African, and Native American traditions to create unique and localized myths.
The queen would like to thank her hair stylist and makeup artist, Dustin McElroy, and all the stylists at Ambiance Salon for helping make this possible. She would also like to thank Kathy Marmillion for creating her "Rougarou Queen" sash and the staff at Chez Lili Bridal for all of their hard work and support. She appreciates Dristy Foret Photography for beautifully capturing all of the hard work and talent that went into creating the fifolet-inspired queen. Most importantly, she would like to thank her husband and kids, along with all of her family and friends, for their love and support during the preparation to be the Rougarou Queen. And lastly, she thanks Jonathan Foret and the Rougarou Fest for the opportunity!
The Rougarou Fest is a family-friendly festival with a spooky flair that celebrates the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of Southeast Louisiana. It showcases live music, cultural activities, children’s activities, Cajun food, the Krewe Ga Rou parade, and so much more. All proceeds go to the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a nonprofit organization that is revolutionizing how we think, teach and learn about Louisiana’s disappearing coast.
Each year a Rougarou Queen is selected to represent the festival at various events throughout the region. The queen is selected from our large team of volunteers by a committee of festival organizers. This ensures that our queen is aware of the details of our festival since she has been a part of bringing our event to life in previous years.
The Rougarou Queen will reign over the parade at 7PM Saturday, October 19, 2024.

Celebrate the Sweetness of Community at FirstLine Schools’ Sweet Potato Fest 2024!
(New Orleans – October 2024) - Get ready for a root-filled celebration like no other at the annual Sweet Potato Fest, hosted by Edible Schoolyard NOLA at Arthur Ashe Charter School! FirstLine Schools invites families, friends, and neighbors to come together for a day of festive fun, delicious food, and hands-on activities that celebrate one of fall's beloved vegetables: the sweet potato!
Event Details:
- Date: Saturday, October 19, 2024
- Time: 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
- Location: Ashe Edible Schoolyard Oak Park, 1456 Gardena Dr., New Orleans, LA 70122
This year’s Sweet Potato Fest is set to be the most exciting yet, offering a variety of fun activities for all ages. Here’s what you can look forward to:
- HARVEST - Roll up your sleeves and help dig up Ashe’s sweet potato bounty. Prizes await for those who find the biggest, smallest, or most uniquely shaped sweet potato!
- FEAST - Sample mouth-watering sweet potato dishes prepared by local chefs, families, and ESYNOLA educators. Festival-goers can vote in the ever-popular Sweet Potato Cook-Off — your taste buds decide the winner!
- CELEBRATE - Enjoy lively music, face painting, arts and crafts with a "tater-twist," interactive games, and more, making this event the perfect outing for the whole family.
- PARADE! – Don’t miss the Ashe Aces Marching Unit as they lead the joyful Sweet Potato Parade around the schoolyard and neighborhood. Join in the festivities as we march, dance, and celebrate the season!
"We're excited to bring the community together for this annual celebration of one of our favorite fall vegetables," said Zach O’Donnell, ESYNOLA Program Manager. "The Sweet Potato Fest is not just about food—it's about fostering community spirit and showcasing the talents of our students and local chefs."
The Sweet Potato Fest gives students and families the chance to connect with nature and the cycle of the seasons by getting hands-on in the garden. It’s a day to honor local farmers, celebrate culinary traditions, and open conversations about sustainable agriculture — all while enjoying a fun, healthy day outdoors. Above all, it’s about the simple joy of digging into the earth, sharing good food, and building a stronger community.
The event is free and open to the public, so gather your friends and family for a day filled with unforgettable memories. Whether you're tasting innovative sweet potato dishes, cheering on parade participants, or simply enjoying the festive atmosphere, Sweet Potato Fest 2024 is not to be missed!

The Project
This collaboration is aligned with our city’s efforts to uplift community voices and utilize our city’s culture to bring positive change to the community. We can bring opportunities for small businesses, local artists, and culture bearers. Most importantly, with community support, the project will create a self-funded long-term impact on our city, helping create positive change and local investment through the arts. The artwork will be both meaningful and representative of the diversity of our city, boosting social cohesion and strengthening community relationships.
The inaugural NOLA Mural Fest will launch in the fall of 2024 at Beanlandia October 25th-27th.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
