AIR FORCE BIRTHDAY

The Air Force Birthday on September 18 commemorates the establishment of The United States Air Force.

Almost from the moment the Wright brothers found a way to soar with the birds, the military incorporated aeronautical pursuits into their missions. However, the Air Force did not become a separate branch of the Armed Forces until September 18, 1947.

The military established the Signal Corps as the first aeronautical force in the United States. During the Civil War, the first missions provided visional communications via flags and torchlight from aerial balloons. Even so, the Signal Corps didn't become an official branch of the Army until 1863. Its creation made way for more aeronautical training and study.

Since then, military air service has gone through many names and commands. A few examples are the Air Service of the US Army, the Air Corps, and the Army Air Force. Finally, in 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act establishing the United States Air Force as a separate branch of the military.

As a result of pursuing advanced technology and superior airmen, the US Air Force emerged as the swiftest tactical force ready to deploy anywhere at a moment's notice. On September 18, celebrate the airmen and women who are on watch every day.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

Giraffes, Zebras and Peafowl, Oh My!

Doesn’t matter whether you’re young or simply young at heart; a fall trip to Global Wildlife’s 900-acre “African savanna in Louisiana” should be high on your list of must-do experiences. From September through December, the wildlife preserve near Folsom, LA, buzzes with excitement during the breeding and birthing season.

As unique as human fingerprints, no two Grant’s zebras have the same striping pattern. A group of zebras is called a dazzle, and with good reason. When they huddle together it’s difficult for predators to pick out an individual zebra to prey upon. Prior to giving birth, mother zebras will separate themselves from the herd. After the foal is born, mom and baby will study each other for hours, memorizing each other’s striping pattern and imprinting vocalizations and scents. This defense mechanism helps mom and foal to reunite quickly if they are separated during a chase. The Grant’s zebra herd has grown by two this autumn, and watching the new foals follow their mom, prancing around on spindly little legs, is sure to bring smiles of delight.

At Global Wildlife’s Visitor Center, a trio of new peachicks religiously follow their mother, Pearl the Indian blue peahen, who is teaching them how to forage for insects and other foods. Pearl faithfully sat on a nest she built on the ground in the Kangaroo Walkabout, and this is her first clutch of chicks to hatch. Pearl communicates with her babies using clucks and calls, encouraging them not to wander far from her protective gaze. Sharp-eyed guests might catch a glimpse of them when they visit!

What is the modern equivalent of the word "erstwhile"?

Hidden

Former

Current

Future

"Former" serves as the contemporary equivalent of the term "erstwhile," both conveying the idea of something that was once in a particular state or role but is no longer so. While "erstwhile" often carries a literary or formal tone, "former" is more commonly used in everyday language, making it accessible to a broader audience. This transition reflects the evolution of language, where simpler terms often replace more archaic ones. Whether referring to a former president, a bygone era, or past relationships, "former" effectively communicates the sense of something that has changed or is no longer in existence.

REMINDER: City of New Orleans Announces Annual Tax Sale

What does "zeitgeber" mean?

Dreamer

Environmental cue

Leader

Painter

zeitgeber

/ˈzaɪtˌɡeɪbər/

Definition: A stimulus, such as light or temperature, that helps to regulate the biological clock of an organism by synchronizing its internal rhythms with the external environment.

Origin: From the German words "Zeit" meaning "time" and "geber" meaning "giver".

Example: Natural light serves as a primary zeitgeber, influencing the sleep-wake cycles of many living organisms.

An environmental cue, or zeitgeber, is a critical factor in regulating biological rhythms in living organisms. These cues, which include natural light, temperature changes, and seasonal variations, help synchronize internal clocks with the external environment. For example, exposure to sunlight in the morning can signal the brain to produce hormones that promote wakefulness, while darkness prompts the release of melatonin to encourage sleep. By responding to these environmental signals, organisms can maintain optimal functioning, ensuring their activities align with the natural cycles of day and night, which is essential for overall health and well-being.

NATIONAL CHEESEBURGER DAY

National Cheeseburger Day on September 18 honors America's favorite sandwich with a slice of cheese. Let's celebrate this delicious food holiday together!

A few days ago, we celebrated National Double Cheeseburger Day. This food holiday is the lighter version. While only a single stack, this tasty burger still earns a celebration!

There are many theories to the beginning of the cheeseburger dating back to the 1920s. One story suggests that Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, The Rite Spot. During an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.

Like numerous iconic foods, many people and restaurants claim the origin story. For example, a restaurant in Los Angeles called O'Dell's placed the cheeseburger on their menu in 1928. It came smothered with chili - all for the price of a quarter. Kaelin's Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky claims they invented the cheeseburger in 1934. One record that gives the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, CO bragging rights is the trademark they received in 1935 for the name "cheeseburger." Another who applied for a trademark of that word was Gus Belt, the founder of Steak n' Shake. Sometime in the 1930s he also applied for the trademark.

Despite all these claims, a couple of things are for sure. The cheeseburger checks all the marks for satisfying a craving, and the cheeseburger isn't going anywhere!

What Does Acknowledging The Corn Mean? 10 Food Expressions Explained

Published on September 18, 2024

Credit: Mae Mu

Food idioms have a way of adding flavor to our speech. From "crying over spilled milk" to being accused of "being a couch potato," we have internalized these phrases and no longer notice their edible main characters. What are the origins of these funny lines? Did their meanings evolve over the centuries? Grab a snack and read on to learn the history of food-related idioms that have seasoned our language since as early as 77 A.D.

1Like nailing jelly to a tree

Credit: Mouse23

You can go ahead and imagine someone trying to staple or nail jelly to the bark. This line applies to tasks that are either challenging or impossible. One of its earliest uses is believed to have been by President Theodore Roosevelt. Legend has it that, over inconclusive talks about the building of the Panama Canal, he said: "Negotiating with those pirates is like trying to nail currant jelly to the wall."

Similar hyperbolic idioms suggest that someone attempting the impossible is trying to "catch the wind" or "herding cats." Also, it may refer to projects that are as difficult as they are useless, just like nailing jelly to a tree.

2Spilling the tea

Credit: Prchi Palwe

Of the list, this is the most modern idiom. It gained popularity in the 2010s via jokes on the internet and social media culture. In a world where tea equals gossip, "spilling the tea", "bringing the tea", or "serving the tea" means to provide juicy, exclusive details about a story. It derives from the shorthand for "Truth": a capital "T". While it’s too soon for the expression to be in every dictionary, the slang is widespread enough to be understood in several countries.

3Being a couch potato

Credit: Liana S

This saying is recent enough to have a known author. In the 1970s, a man called Tom Iacino improvised this term in a phone call to refer to his lazy friend. From then on, Tom and his close ones adopted the words to laugh about their sedentary habits. The expression soon became used in cartoons and TV shows, and eventually caught on. In an interview many years later, Tom said he couldn’t explain why he had come up with that silly image back then.

4Crying over spilled milk

Credit: Noemí Jiménez

Here’s another idiom that stuck because of the humor in the image it paints. Have you ever stopped to picture someone on the floor, crying over spilled milk? Melodramatic, right? The reason the phrase caught on since early mentions in 17th-century English literature is the mockery implied in it. When someone is told not to cry over spilled milk, they are being consoled by the fact that their mishap is rather irrelevant. It also points out that, however minor, their mistake can’t be undone, like putting the milk back in the jar.

5Being in a pickle

Credit: Ray Shrewsberry

To be or not to be in a pickle! It was William Shakespeare himself who first penned this idiom in his play The Tempest. He intended it with a different meaning than simply being in trouble, though. In the play, a shipwreck strands two characters on an island with nothing but a barrel of wine. It is their king who finds them later and asks Trinculo, one of them: "How came’st thou in this pickle?," because, by that point, Trinculo is drunk.

Fifty years after Shakespeare’s play, another writer, Samuel Pepys, used the phrase to describe a messy, bothersome, problematic situation. This is the version that stuck through the centuries.

6A baker’s dozen

Credit: Mae Mu

A baker’s dozen equals 13. Here’s the logic behind that. In medieval England, bakers were subject to strict regulations and often received fines or floggings for shortchanging customers. When you are baking 300 loaves a day in a medieval oven, it is possible that some of them might come out undersized. To avoid conflicts in weighing and counting, bakers adopted the habit of including one or even two extra items in each dozen they sold. This practice was so widespread that by the 16th century, the expression "baker’s dozen" had become a standard term to mean 13.

7Taking it with a grain of salt

Credit: monicore

The suggestion to "take it with a grain of salt" has ancient origins. It is believed to come from a natural medicine bible written around 77 AD, Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia. In it, Pliny recounted a story about the Roman general Pompey, who discovered an antidote for poison that included a grain of salt. This antidote was thought to make one immune to poison if taken regularly. In Classical Latin, Pliny’s words were addito salis grano ("after having added a grain of salt").

Over time, the concept became a metaphor for skepticism. With it, people are advised not to believe everything they hear. Just as a grain of salt could mitigate naïveté.

8The greatest thing since sliced bread

Credit: Young Shih

We can all agree that pre-sliced bread is a major convenience. Back in the 1920s, when the first automatic bread slicer was invented, sliced bread started being sold under the brand name "Wonder Bread". Their ads read: "The greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped." After that, popularly, people started to admire new, helpful, or groundbreaking inventions as "the greatest thing since sliced bread".

9Acknowledging the corn

Credit: engin akyurt

To "confess the corn", to "own the corn", or even to "acknowledge the malt" all refer to the act of admitting to at least part of the guilt of some crime. According to Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrases and Fable, this one originated in a Congressional debate of 1828. The fable goes that one of the states had previously claimed to be a corn exporter. Representatives then admitted that they exported hogs who had eaten corn, which was exported in that way.

A funnier version sustains that it was first said in a court case in the 19th century, in which a man was accused of stealing horses and a large supply of corn. It is said that aiming to be dismissed from the charge and the terrible penalty for horse thieves, he stood and declared: "I acknowledge the corn."

10To have one’s cake and eat it too

The Lake House

An undated stereograph by W.H. Leeson of the Lake House at Lake End. Proprietor Joseph Wharton described in the 1840 Daily Picayune as being “at the end of the New Shell Road.” The listed prices were: $1.00 for fish breakfast, dinner, and supper, wines from $0.50 to $1.50 for claret, $2.00 for champagne per bottle. Transportation was $0.375 per person each way on an omnibus from the Banks Arcade to the Lake House and back.

As W.H. (William H.) Leeson was popular after the Civil War, at that time the Lake House was also known as Hoyt’s New Lake House and/or Colonel Hoyt’s Lake House, but was purchased in 1879 by Theodore Bruning. The business was offered at auction in 1888.

In 1859 Theodore Bruning moved his Carrollton restaurant to Bucktown/West End. There were no levees and roads flooded from September to April so Mr. Bruning opened his doors from Easter Sunday until Labor Day of each year. In 1886 Bruning’s moved to the location it remained in until Hurricane Georges badly damaged it in 1998.

Playmakers Theater been producing terrific shows from Covington’s Sans Souci Forest since 1955. This Saturday we raise the curtain on our 70th season with the uproarious comedy ‘Til Beth Do Us Part, by Jones Hope Wooten, the same team that wrote 2023’s sellout hit, The Savannah Sipping Society. Directed by Derek Thrush, the madcap comedy revolves around an ambitious, conniving assistant who attempts to take over her harried boss’s business and her husband.

‘Til Beth Do Us Part is a side-splitting comic romp about careens around the strained marriage of Gibby and Suzannah, a couple who have allowed their 27-year marriage grow stale. When new assistant Beth steps in the fireworks begin. Whether you’re married, single, rethinking your divorce or currently being controlled by someone up to no good, you’re sure to enjoy this family friendly, laugh-out-loud comedy.

The cast features Joanna Parr, Shawn Patterson, Stephanie Sayles, Jen Patterson, Laura Hayes, Daniel Jenkins, and Nada Elkassouf. Assistant director is Jen Patterson.

There will be some important changes at Playmakers Theater beginning this season. Evening curtain times will be 7:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. to help patrons navigate bridge construction traffic. We will also be adding Friday evening performances. And Playmakers will once again offer reserved seating.

Season tickets are available for $130 and on sale now at BonTempsTix.com at the “Get Your Season Tickets Now” link below. Individual tickets for ‘Til Beth Do Us Part are $20 and also available at the BonTempsTix.com “Get Your Tickets Now” link below. The play opens Saturday, September 7 and runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through September 22. Evening curtain times are 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Also in September, BK House will host the second annual Beautiful Spaces Symposium on Saturday, September 14, focusing on the legacy of gardens in New Orleans.  The inspiring day will explore the rich history, design and cultural significance of the city’s gardens and will feature distinguished experts covering a broad spectrum of landscapes from formal parterre gardens to indigenous wild spaces. The program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, with coffee, a boxed lunch and closing reception.  Visit www.bkhouse.org for details.

Dedicated to maintaining the historical treasure, the annual BK House Soiree in the Vieux Carre’ will take place on Sunday, September 29. The fundraiser will be held from 5-8 pm, featuring John Boutte in the Courtyard and Amber Rachelle & the Sweet Potatoes in the Parterre Garden and a delicious Sunday Supper by 12 Seasons Catering & Events. Co-chaired by Sarah & Marshall Hevron and Carroll Gelderman Zimmer & Emory Zimmer, proceeds from the festive event will support major restorations to interior plaster and masonry, as well as the BK Endowment Fund.  Tickets start at $100, with various levels available for individuals and sponsors, and may be purchased at www.bkhouse.org.

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
