NATIONAL WILDLIFE DAY | SEPTEMBER 4

National Wildlife Day on September 4th encourages improved awareness of the species around us and in the broader world.

This National Day focuses on endangered species, preservation, and conservation efforts around the world. Zoos, aviaries and marine sanctuaries provide a variety of ways to get involved.

No matter where you live, opportunities abound to learn and participate in the day. Wildlife doesn't only exist in the forest or outside the city limits. Look closely. The creatures and animals sharing our world live under our feet and in the sky above us. Our rivers, lakes and oceans are teeming with wildlife of all sizes. It's essential to understand how we impact the habitats that animals need to survive. Their homes supply their food and shelter.

Since wildlife relies on a stable habitat, understanding conservation and preservation is important. Developing strategies helps to maintain existing habitats and repair or replace those that have been destroyed. These strategies are especially important when a decline in a species is detected. For example, each year in August, International Whale Shark Day brings attention to the plight of the world's largest fish. Despite efforts, the gentle giant continues to decline in numbers.

Around the world, facilities and organizations will present seminars and educational programs. Additionally, podcasts and documentaries alert us to the changing conditions for various species around the world. Some may be as close as your own backyard. From the sky to the depths of the ocean, wildlife surrounds us.

NATIONAL SPICE BLEND DAY

If an alluring aroma of spices is tempting your senses on September 4, that is because it is National Spice Blend Day. Home cooks and professional chefs alike know herbs and spices bring our favorite foods alive on our palates. In fact, every recipe, every food blog, and every cook stresses the importance of quality herbs and spices for everything you cook.

National Spice Blend Day celebrates the unique combinations of flavors found in handpicked spice blends worldwide. Does a little smoky paprika, cumin, and rosemary tantalize your senses? Did you know there are four main types of cinnamon, each with different flavor profiles? Depending on where the cinnamon grows, the warmth, sweetness, and color change. When you blend it with nutmeg, ginger, cardamom, and other spices, it brings an extra special touch to your baking and other recipes.

Herbs are also vital to every kitchen, and just like spices, the Earth has created a bountiful variety! Worldwide, so many kinds of Basil grows it would be impossible to list them all, but each one imbues unique characteristics worth exploring. When this herb is combined with curry or Mediterranean blends, you know you're cooking for a celebration.

With only a few examples, we know we have your creative and gastric juices flowing for National Spice Blend Day!

Storm tracker: Hurricane center tracking 3 waves in Atlantic; 2 could become tropical depressions

Gabe Hauari and Doyle Rice

The National Hurricane Center is tracking three tropical waves in the Atlantic Ocean that could become tropical depressions later this week.

The NHC said in an advisory early Tuesday morning that "disorganized showers and thunderstorms" continue in association with a tropical wave currently located over Hispaniola and the central Caribbean Sea.

The westward-moving wave could see conditions conducive to further development when it reaches the western Caribbean Sea and southwestern Gulf of Mexico later this week and into the weekend, the NHC said, at which time a tropical depression could form.

Elsewhere, another tropical wave currently in the far eastern Atlantic is also producing showers and thunderstorms. The NHC says environmental conditions are forecast to become "a little more conducive for development" and that a tropical depression could form in a few days "while the disturbance moves slowly west-northwestward over the eastern tropical Atlantic."

The third system is currently located midway between the west coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles and is also producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms, according to the NHC. The agency says some "slow development" is possible during the next couple of days as the system moves west-northwestward, but that environmental conditions are expected to become "unfavorable" for additional development by the end of the week.

The first two tropical waves have a 40 percent chance of developing over the next seven days while the third has a 10 percent chance, the NHC said.

Busy September for Atlantic hurricane season activity?

Meteorologists say activity in the Atlantic will continue to ramp up as we enter September. The dry, dusty air from Africa that prevents storms from developing in the Atlantic is forecast to wane, AccuWeather hurricane expert Alex DaSilva told USA TODAY last Wednesday.

"The dust will go away, and allow for the Atlantic to wake up," he said.

He added that water temperatures in many parts of the ocean are plenty warm for storms to develop and thrive.

DaSilva said water temperatures in Gulf of Mexico are at record levels. "If anything develops in the Gulf, it could take off very quickly. People have to pay attention: Storms can rapidly evolve and intensify rapidly."

Computer models also show more activity in the Atlantic in September, as previously reported by USA TODAY: "Long-range models are becoming increasingly confident that the deep Atlantic tropics will soon spawn a system worth tracking, and there’s plenty of reason to believe that a busy September and/or October lie ahead," meteorologists Jeff Masters and Bob Henson wrote on their blog Yale Climate Connections.

So far this year, there have been more storms in the Pacific than the Atlantic, and that's a bit of a surprise, forecasters say. In addition, it's been eerily calm in the Atlantic over the past week or so as we approach what's traditionally the busiest time of the season.

New Orleans Guaranteed Income Program for Youth Shows Increased Employment, Improved Financial Well-being and Lower Housing Cost Burden

Researchers find that young people see tangible benefits with $350 monthly guaranteed income.

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell, the Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families (OYF) and Mayors for a Guaranteed Income today announced the release of independent data on the New Orleans Guaranteed Income Program, showcasing higher employment rates, improved financial well-being and better housing security.

The New Orleans Guaranteed Income Program provided $350 a month for 10 months to 125 young people between the ages of 16-24. Initiated by Mayor Cantrell and operated by OYF, the program focused on young people in Orleans Parish who were disconnected from work and school, with the goal of supporting these “opportunity youth” to connect to education and employment opportunities. OYF partnered with nine community-based organizations to refer participants to the program, including ALAS, Collegiate Academies, Healthy Start, New Orleans Public Schools, Youth Empowerment Project, New Orleans Youth Alliance, Louisiana Center for Children's Rights and Educators for Quality Alternatives. In addition, OYF partnered with United Way of Southeast Louisiana to provide benefits counseling to all participants.

"It’s imperative that we recognize how financial instability contributes to some of the most pressing issues facing our communities, including physical and mental health, employment and job security, parenting, substance abuse and more," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "We designed the New Orleans Guaranteed Income Program with the understanding that every person and their families have a different set of needs. This program has given our youth the power and autonomy to make the choices that most benefit them, aligning with my administration's goals to create a more inclusive and equitable city for generations to come."

Key findings include:

  • Increase in employment — The increase in full-time employment was statistically significant, going from 6 percent at the outset to 21 percent after the program. Income volatility decreased by nearly 20 percentage points over the course of the program.
  • Improved financial stability — Shifts in financial well-being over the course of the program indicate a positive trend over time, with fewer individuals falling into the lower well-being categories and more transitioning into higher well-being statuses.
  • Alleviated housing cost burden — Despite general market trends of increasing rents and housing costs, the percentage of participants reporting a housing cost burden exceeding 50 percent of their income declined over the course of the program. Notably, homelessness was only reported during the Baseline evaluation, indicating a potential improvement in housing situation over time.

One guaranteed income recipient explained the benefit, stating, “I went to an actual coding boot camp. I made it to a grade level, and it was at a point in time when my computer had broke. I was really wondering, ‘Wow, how am I going to get another computer?’ Then it just popped. I remembered my GI payment card, and I was able to go get the computer problem solved without any stress. It made me feel great, because if I wouldn’t have had it, it would’ve been totally different.”

“Young people growing up in poverty face an enormous set of obstacles to success, and the results of this program prove that most of them just need a little more financial stability in order to pursue their dreams,” said Founder of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income Michael D. Tubbs. “More than a dozen studies have shown that guaranteed income not only helps people meet their basic needs, it also increases employment rates, improves housing security and gives people a sense of hope and agency. Guaranteed income works, and Mayor Cantrell has shown the kind of forward-thinking leadership that we need across the nation to help the next generation succeed.”

The New Orleans Guaranteed Income Program is affiliated with Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, a coalition of over 160 mayors and growing. The research findings from New Orleans build upon similar results from the mayor-led guaranteed income programs in Stockton, Calif., Saint Paul, Minn., Cambridge, Mass., Paterson, N.J., Richmond, Va. and Baltimore, Md. where researchers found increased employment, greater financial stability, more parent-child time and a better level of overall well-being.

Five new restaurants to try in the Greater New Orleans area

by: Christian Olivier

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Greater New Orleans area is known for many unique cultural aspects, but perhaps the most noteworthy of them is the wide variety of food available to hungry inquirers from around the world.

For those who may be more accustomed to long-standing offerings, however, trying something new may very well be in order for an upcoming weekend out.

To help out prospective foodies, we’ve put together this list of five newly opened restaurants from across the culinary spectrum, hoping to offer something appealing to even the pickiest of eaters.

1. City Market

For a wide variety of foods and flavors, City Market at 1101 Elysian Fields Ave. in New Orleans is an ideal choice.

The market features six distinct eateries offering many items, including hamburgers, baked goods, sushi, bubble tea, Cajun staples and Vietnamese cuisine.

City Market may be a good option for groups of picky eaters, as the numerous options serve to provide something for everyone.

The establishment is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

2. Rascal Blues Chicken and Waffles

Rascal Blues, located at 1801 Rousseau St. in New Orleans, offers sweet and savory Southern foods for a comforting, at-home feeling.

The restaurant, which opened on Aug. 3, is of course known for their chicken and waffles, but also offers many soul-food staples such as greens, corn bread and mac and cheese.

Rascal Blues is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and may be the perfect choice for people looking for an indulgent meal in a family-centric, musical and culturally unique setting.

3. Tacos del Cartel

Back in April, Tacos del Cartel opened a fresh location in New Orleans at 1010 Girod St., and with renovations happening at their older Metairie location as well, now is the perfect time to check out this vibrant spot for street tacos and Tex-Mex cuisine.

The restaurant offers a wide variety of tacos for customers to choose from, including eight specialty options, such as their duck carnitas taco, and eight traditional options, such as the classic tacos de asada, which is made with flank steak.

Tacos Del Cartel also offers many sides, soups, desserts and larger meals for groups. The New Orleans location is open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Tuesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

4. Sushi Takumi

This new Japanese restaurant, located only a block away from the Superdome at 703 Carondelet St. in the Central Business District of New Orleans, was started in part because the owner, Johnny Wang, noticed a lack of affordable sushi restaurants.

Sushi Takumi has also recently gained notoriety from its introduction of a “Taylor Swift Roll” ahead of the singer’s upcoming show in New Orleans.

A walk through Cajun and Creole origins and histories

The restaurant offers many, many varieties of sushi for customers to choose from, including classics like the California and Crunchy Rolls, and specialty rolls like the House Steak Roll, made with shrimp, snow crab and seared beef with avocado inside and scallions, BBQ eel sauce and spicy mayo on top.

Sushi Takumi is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 11:30 a.m. 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. The restaurant is closed on Tuesday.

5. Savvy’s Sliders

Savvy Sliders, the fastest growing slider restaurant in the U.S., has opened a new location at 2565 Metairie Rd. in Metairie, bringing to this list a faster, more everyday kind of cuisine for the those who prefer to keep things simple.

One of Savvy’s main selling points is serving fresh, never frozen sliders in a variety of different configurations in order to meet anyone’s preference.

The fast-food joint offers simple staples on their sliders, such as angus beef, but also offer more unique options, such as the “Boomin’ Chicken” slider, made with fried chicken, pickles, lettuce and Savvy’s “Boom Sauce.”

For those less interested in sliders, the restaurant also features hand-breaded chicken fingers, fries, cheese curds, onion rings and well as nine different flavors of custard shakes.

Savvy’s Sliders is open from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday, and from 10:30 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

A Vanishing Bounty: Louisiana’s Coastal Environment and Culture

Explore the beauty and history of Louisiana's natural environment and the threats to its continued existence posed by human habitation.

As recently reported by Fox 8, the Northshore of Greater New Orleans has become “a hotbed of transformation, experiencing unprecedented growth.”

Two recent announcements typify this growth, with legacy industries doubling down, and entrepreneurship bubbling up:

Chevron - Chevron Corporation, with its Gulf of Mexico headquarters in Covington, announced a technological breakthrough that will allow the company to start pumping oil from the Anchor oilfield, which operates in approximately mile-deep water 140 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Brent Gros, Vice President, Gulf of Mexico Business Unit at Chevron, said this advancement will help secure over 500 Chevron Northshore jobs. The technology developed by Chevron, together with oil services company Transocean and other partners, has made it possible to operate deepwater oil and gas extraction at higher pressure than previous limits. “First oil from Anchor is a major technological milestone in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, culminating from a decadelong effort from operators, service companies and regulators," Wood Mackenzie analyst Mfon Usoro wrote. You can read more about Chevron’s Anchor announcement here.

Palette - To help develop new technologies - and new entrepreneurs - Palette, a workspace & resource community, is opening its first location in St. Tammany at the end of 2024, in the office complex at 201 Holiday Boulevard in Covington. Palette was founded by Louisiana native Catherine Hover, who built two successful Palette locations in New York. Co-founders of Palette Northshore include former President and CEO of Stirling Properties Marty Mayer, estate advisor Bradley Cook and local entrepreneur Rory Gallardo. Palette Northshore’s physical space, designed by Greenleaf Architects, features multiple co-working spaces and private offices, event space, conference rooms, a podcast studio, outdoor workspace, and a connected café. Palette partners include St. Tammany Corporation, STartUP Northshore, Greater New Orleans Inc., The Idea Village, and Southeastern Louisiana University.  You can read more about Palette, and join, here.

Additional recent Northshore good news includes:

  • Beier Integrated Systems unveiled an expansion plan, adding 15,000 square feet to their current facility in Slidell. This will allow the company to retain more than 30 existing jobs and create additional positions, with an average salary of $80,000
  • St. Tammany Corporation has been recognized with two 2024 Excellence in Economic Development Awards from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC):
  • GOLD: NSpire Startup Slam Pitch Competition – Special Event
  • BRONZE: St. Tammany Corporation – Economic Development Organization (EDO) of the Year

Heavy rains, flash flooding possible in New Orleans area after a dry Labor Day

After Labor Day’s dry weather, daily downpours are expected to return with flash flooding possible Wednesday morning, forecasters said.

The heaviest rains are expected Wednesday, which could dump as much as 4 inches of water, per hour, on parts of South Louisiana.

The New Orleans metro area is expected to see about 3-4 inches of rain between Wednesday through Friday, said Megan Williams, a local meteorologist with the National Weather Service, though that could end up being a low estimate.

“There definitely could be local higher amounts possible, each day, depending on where the storm is set up,” Williams said.

Forecasters are expecting scattered flash flooding from around 7 a.m. Wednesday through early Thursday morning.

Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Slidell are at a threat level of two out of four, indicating a “slight” chance of pooling waters in densely populated or low-lying areas, forecasts said.

“It’s more vulnerable,” Williams said about New Orleans, who noted the rainfalls are typical for this time of year. “The water doesn’t drain as quickly.”

The weather for Labor Day, while hot, was expected to be much better, with a minimal chance of rain. Temperatures are likely to be in the low-to-mid 90’s.

What does "insouciance" mean?

Casual lack of concern

Panic

Focus

Fear

insouciance

/ˌɪn.suːˈsi.əns/

Definition: A relaxed and carefree attitude; a lack of concern or anxiety.

Origin: Derived from the French word "insouciance," meaning "carefree," which combines "in-" (not) and "souci" (care or worry).

Example: Despite the impending deadlines, her insouciance allowed her to enjoy the sunny afternoon without a worry in the world.

"Insouciance" refers to a casual lack of concern, embodying a state of being unconcerned or indifferent to obligations and worries. It suggests a lighthearted approach to life, where one chooses to focus on the present moment rather than being bogged down by stress or responsibilities. Individuals exhibiting insouciance may appear carefree, often engaging in activities without worry about the consequences. This quality can be refreshing, allowing for spontaneous enjoyment of life, though it may also lead to criticism for overlooking important matters. Overall, insouciance captures the essence of living in the moment with an easygoing spirit.

20 years of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture GardenThis year, the New Orleans Museum of Art celebrates 20 years of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, one of the city's favorite places for discovery, wonder, and respite. Free and open to all, NOMA's Besthoff Sculpture Garden features world-class artwork from the 19th century to the present day, all set within the unique landscape of South Louisiana.

Open seven days a week, 10 am–6 pm.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

PHRASES WITHOUT BORDERS

What Is The British Phrase For “Third Wheel”? Famous Phrases Translated

Published on September 3, 2024

Credit: Adolfo Félix

To say that the English language is filled to the brim with quirky and baffling idioms is no groundbreaking news: after all, we say that someone has "kicked the bucket" when they pass away, or that a heavy thunderstorm is comparable to "cats and dogs" raining from the sky. However, while we have previously delved into the inherent strangeness of the idioms we use every day, one of the most beautiful aspects of these phrases is how difficult they are to translate: tell a non-native English speaker that you are "head over heels" for them and you might only receive a weird look as a response. Luckily, for every strange English idiom, there’s always an even stranger idiom that conveys the same meaning, though using entirely different images. With that in mind, here are ten of the most unique equivalents of English idioms we could find. Enjoy!

1It's all Greek to me

Credit: Arthur Yeti

We’ll start with one that perfectly describes how baffling some of these idioms are. Whenever someone says "It’s all Greek to me" they are trying to convey how incomprehensible or difficult something is. In a way, this idiom makes perfect sense: English and Greek are extremely dissimilar, from the way both languages sound to the way they are written.

Similarly, the Czech language’s equivalent to this idiom also focuses on a completely dissimilar language to convey this feeling. The expression je to pro mě španělská vesnice literally translates to "It's a Spanish village to me."

2Rekindle an old flame

Credit: PHÚC LONG

To say that someone has "rekindled an old flame" means that they have rediscovered feelings for a former partner. In that sense, these idioms are fairly self-explanatory: the image of lighting up a fire perfectly summarizes the heat and excitement of passion. However, Italy’s answer to this idiom perplexingly focuses on an objectively less romantic image. Let’s put it this way: if you had to associate passion and intimacy with a vegetable, would you honestly pick a cabbage?

The Italian phrase cavolo riscaldato, the equivalent to "rekindling an old flame", literally translates to "reheated cabbage." If this doesn’t speak to you, we have good and bad news. The good news is that some regions of Italy use a variant of this idiom, minestra riscaldata, so you might prefer to use this one the next time you find yourself in "the Boot." The bad news is that this idiom doesn’t fare that much better, since it translates to "reheated soup."

3Third wheel

Credit: Petim latifi

No one wants to be the third wheel, that friend caught in the awkward position of unwillingly chaperoning a date. While tricycles are definitely a thing, this idiom speaks to how useless a third wheel is to a two-wheeled vehicle like a bicycle. Moreover, an argument could be made that it also highlights how troublesome it would be to carry a third and motionless wheel: it is as awkward for the couple as it is for the third party. Like we said, no one wants to be the third wheel.

In that sense, British English has a colorful idiom with the same meaning as "third wheel": being an unwanted companion is known in the United Kingdom as "playing gooseberry." The history behind this idiom is rather interesting: it comes from how chaperones would pretend to pick gooseberries to allow couples some intimacy during a date.

4Having the Blues

Credit: Pasqualino Capobianco

The color blue has been associated with sadness since at least the late 19th century: "Having the blues" is a common idiom that describes not feeling great. There’s a reason why Blues music received this name: its slow chords and melancholic lyrics usually convey an atmosphere of sadness.

While the English language has a primary color to describe sadness, French is not so lucky: the phrase avoir le cafard, the equivalent of "having the blues," literally means "to have the cockroach." While definitively unpleasant, a point could be made that encountering a cockroach produces an unpleasant feeling not completely dissimilar to the blues.

5Call a spade a spade

Credit: Caleb Woods

Quick question: if you had to choose the subject of our next idiom between a spade or a cat, would you even hesitate to choose the kitten? We know you wouldn’t: who in their right mind would pick a boring old spade over an adorable little furry bundle of joy?

Unfortunately for us English speakers, we are stuck with the idiom "to call a spade a spade" whenever we need to speak bluntly and in a straightforward manner. On the other hand, the French equivalent to this idiom is the phrase appeler un chat un chat, which translates to "to call a cat a cat."

6Take the fall

Credit: Andrea Sonda

Any English speaker "taking the fall" is facing responsibility or repercussions for someone else’s actions, whether it is done intentionally or not. While this idiom is rather self-explanatory, the same can’t be said about its Portuguese counterpart: the phrase pagar o pato translates to "pay the duck."

Don’t worry, this idiom doesn’t involve reimbursing any ducks. Its origins can be traced back to an old Portuguese fable in which a dispute concerning the cost of a duck breaks out between a poor family and a duck vendor.

7To have tomatoes on one’s eyes / In the dark

Credit: Rafael Corrêa

When someone is "in the dark," they are completely unaware of something happening in the background. Whether they are kept in the dark by someone or they choose to live in ignorant bliss doesn’t really affect the meaning of this idiom: at the end of the day, someone is "in the dark" just by ignoring something.

In that sense, the imagery of this idiom seems rather obvious: someone whose vision is impaired and can’t see properly. Curiously, the German equivalent of this idiom still manages to convey the same meaning with an entirely different picture: the idiom Tomaten auf den Augen haben means "to have tomatoes on one's eyes."

8To give a darn

Credit: Bovia & Co. Photography

While we mostly use it as a mild and more polite swear word, the term "darn" actually has a definition: it can be used as a verb for mending knitted clothing like a sweater, or as a noun to describe patches and holes in clothes. Funnily, when it comes to the idiom "to give a darn," both meanings of this word can be used. Since this idiom means not caring at all about something, both a meaningless hole and a bland insult can convey this feeling.

On the contrary, some Spanish-speaking countries have an equivalent idiom that makes use of one of the most beloved vegetables in the world. The phrase me importa un pepino roughly translates to "It matters to me as much as a cucumber does." While we can’t be sure if this idiom speaks of how cheap or how disliked cucumbers are in the Spanish-speaking world, we are certain that being told that you matter as much as a vegetable is definitively a hard pill to swallow.

9Speak of the Devil

Credit: Mathew Schwartz

Don’t worry; this idiom doesn’t involve any curses: The devil won’t actually show up if you speak of him, like some sort of Bloody Mary urban legend. This extremely popular idiom is used whenever you are talking about someone, and they suddenly show up at that exact moment.

In the Spanish-speaking world, the devil is replaced with a king. Contrary to what you might think though, the saying does not mention the king of Spain, but rather a fictional king of the capital city of Italy: Spanish speakers use the expression hablando del rey de Roma, which literally translates to "speaking of the King of Rome."

10To Wear a Cat on One’s Head / Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

Credit: Reba Spike

We’ll end this article with the idiom that confused us the most. The expression "a wolf in sheep’s clothing" is used to describe a dangerous person hiding behind an innocent facade. This idiom comes from the New Testament, where Jesus warns his disciples against false prophets who mask their dark intentions with kindness. In any case, this idiom doesn’t require much explanation: a wolf is, after all, a dangerous predator to defenseless sheep.

However, Japan’s take on this idiom uses what’s probably this country’s most beloved pet. Japan’s expression "To wear a cat in your head" means exactly the same thing as "a wolf in sheep’s clothing." We know this is confusing, but trust us, there is a perfectly reasonable explanation. Japan’s very well-documented love for cats means that no one would ever suspect a cat of something nefarious. Thus, hiding behind a cat’s cuteness helps divert prying eyes from someone’s true intentions.

NATIONAL MACADAMIA NUT DAY | SEPTEMBER 4

National Macadamia Nut Day on September 4th recognizes a delicious nut found in many baked goods and desserts.

Delectable macadamia nuts have a creamy buttery taste. These nuts add a subtle richness to everything they grace. Also versatile, macadamia nuts originated in Australia. They were named for the physician and chemist, John Macadam, who discovered them. Macadam also pursued furthering the cultivation of the tree in Australia, making it more abundant.

Similar to large evergreens, the macadamia tree grows between 30 and 40 feet high. Although they are native to Australia, most of today's world supply grows in Hawaii. Growers first began cultivating macadamia trees in Hawaii in 1921. Indonesia, South Africa, and California also grow this delicious nut commercially.

Like many nuts, macadamia may be eaten raw or roasted. Bakers particularly like to use them in baked goods, such as cookies. They pair exceptionally well with chocolate, too.

Since the macadamia is nutrient-rich, they are known for their health benefits. But, of course, being in the nut family has its benefits, too! Macadamias are a valuable energy source, high in dietary fiber, gluten-free, high in mono-unsaturated fat. They also provide an excellent source of minerals and contain many essential B-complex vitamins.

What a Difference a Year Makes...

Vintage variation in wine refers to the differences in the characteristics and quality of wines produced from the same vineyard or region in different years. These variations are primarily influenced by the weather and climate conditions experienced during a particular growing season, including factors such as temperature, rainfall, and sunshine. In years with ideal weather conditions, such as a balanced mix of sun and rain, grapes can ripen perfectly, leading to a vintage with well-structured, flavorful wines. Conversely, a growing season with too much rain, frost, or extreme heat can result in grapes that are under-ripe, overripe, or unevenly developed, leading to wines that may lack balance or complexity. Additionally, the timing of the harvest, influenced by weather patterns, can impact the final wine, as grapes picked too early or too late may not achieve their full potential. As a result, each vintage offers a unique snapshot of that year’s conditions, making wine an ever-changing, dynamic product where no two vintages are exactly alike.

Wine vintages are then rated by a combination of wine critics, publications, and organizations that assess the quality of wines produced in a specific year. These ratings are typically based on factors such as the weather conditions during the growing season, the quality of the grapes harvested, and the overall character and potential longevity of the wines produced.

In this tasting, we'll discuss these variations and how certain growing conditions affect wine, good or bad. We'll be tasting wines from selected, highly rated vintages in their respective regions around the world, and then ask you to rate the wine and see how your ratings correspond to the vintage rating. Join David Sobiesk for this fun, tasting and informative event! For more information and tickets, go to Vintage Variation

Playmakers Theater been producing terrific shows from Covington’s Sans Souci Forest since 1955. This Saturday we raise the curtain on our 70th season with the uproarious comedy ‘Til Beth Do Us Part, by Jones Hope Wooten, the same team that wrote 2023’s sellout hit, The Savannah Sipping Society. ‘Til Beth Do Us Part is a side-splitting comic romp about careens around the strained marriage of Gibby and Suzannah, a couple who have allowed their 27-year marriage grow stale. When new assistant Beth steps in the fireworks begin. Whether you’re married, single, rethinking your divorce or currently being controlled by someone up to no good, you’re sure to enjoy this family friendly, laugh-out-loud comedy.

The cast features Joanna Parr, Shawn Patterson, Stephanie Sayles, Jen Patterson, Laura Hayes, Daniel Jenkins, and Nada Elkassouf. Assistant director is Jen Patterson.

2024 SCHEDULE

LSU Football

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Metairie, Louisiana)—Jefferson Performing Arts’ upcoming production of School of Rock: The Musical will feature 36 local performers, half of whom are local middle and high schoolers. Several cast members will perform with real instruments live onstage at Jefferson Performing Arts Center September 13-22, 2024.

Based on the 2003 movie, School of Rock: The Musical tells the story of Dewey Finn, a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school who turns his class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical features 14 new songs and songs from the original movie.

Adult principals include Nathan Parrish as Dewey Finn, Rachel Looney as Rosalie Mullins, Melissa McKenzie as Patty Di Marco and Daniel Rubio as Ned Schneebly. Youth principals include Andrew Letellier as Zack Mooneyham, Merah Benoit as Katie, Drago Han as Lawrence, August Doussan as Freddie, and Olivia Yi as Summer Hathaway.

Nathan (Dewey) and four youth performers will be playing their instruments live on stage: Merah Benoit (Katie) will play bass guitar, Drago Han (Lawrence) will play keyboards, August Doussan (Freddie) will play drums, and Andrew Letellier (Zack) will play guitar. Some of the youth musicians are making their acting debuts (August Doussan) while others are seasoned performers (such as Merah Benoit) who are learning their instruments for their roles in this show.

Brief Bios of Principal Youth Performers:

Merah Benoit’s (Katie) performance career began as a Lost Boy in the mainstage JPA production of Peter Pan at the age of 5. She went on to perform in other JPA productions including Sound of Music (Marta). She is an emerging film and TV actress with a resumé that includes working with many award-winning artists and directors including Will Smith in “Emancipation”, Renee Zellweger in “The Thing about Pam”, Jon Batiste’s music video “Freedom” and her most recent role as Emma Stone’s daughter in “Kinds of Kindness” by award-winning director Yorgos Lanthimos.

August Doussan (Freddie)  has been learning from local legendary drummers like Johnny Vidacovich and Stanton Moore, from an early age. At age 8, he joined School of Rock Metairie/New Orleans and quickly rose to become a drummer for the prestigious School of Rock House Band. His musical journey has taken him across 38 states on tour with his guitarist dad. This is his JPA debut.

Drago Han (Lawrence) is a freshman at The Willow School. This is his first JPA production. Previous roles have been Calvin in San (Le Petite Theater), Orin Scrivello in Little Shop of Horrors (Willow School), Mike Teavee in Willy Wonka Jr. (Willow School), Ugly in Honk Jr. (Saint Martin’s), and Carlos in Descendants (Saint Martin’s).

Andrew Letellier (Zack) is an 8th grader at the Waldorf School of New Orleans. When he is not rocking out on his guitar, he can be found rock climbing at the New Orleans Boulder Lounge or studying jazz piano at the Heritage School of Music. This is his JPA debut.
