British Raid on Danbury Topic of Tomorrow's Speaker

Ed Hynes

Ed Hynes first became interested in the Danbury Raid as a child when he learned his neighbor’s house was partially burned by the British during the raid. He and his wife are fascinated by history and have visited many important battlefields both here and abroad.

Ed will talk about the British landing at Compo Beach in the spring of 1777, their march through Redding to Danbury, and their return to the shore through Ridgefield and Wilton. He will discuss the main encounters that took place in Danbury and Ridgefield and the roles key historical figures played in the Raid and Battle.

Ed was born and raised in Wilton, attended Wilton High School, and currently lives in Norwalk. He graduated from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. with a BA in political science, and subsequently spent most of his career in financial services.

Our Thursday morning meetings are held in Hoskins Hall with coffee, donuts, bagels and cream cheese from 9:00 am to 10:00 am; business meeting at 10:00 am; and speaker at 10:30 am who finishes no later than 11:30 am. Hoskins Hall is downstairs in the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East in Westport.

GIDG To Focus on Middle East at Monday's Meeting

The Global Issues Discussion Group (GIDG) will meet next Monday, October 21 at 9:00 am in Rooms 203/204 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. There were lively discussions on Africa at the last two meetings but the Group will return to topics in the Middle East on Monday. Because that area is heating up, there should be plenty of key current issues.

The hot topics now are "If, How and What: Should Israel attack Iran." Next: How far will or should Israel progress in attacking Hezbollah. And most recently, the US has sent in about 100 troops to man the THAAD anti-missile launchers to protect Israel from possible Iranian attacks.

There will probably be more hot issues by next Monday.

See you there.

Frank Wood, GIDG Moderator

Y's Men Partner With VFW Post 399 in Blood Drive

One of the most important Y’s Men Community Service initiatives is our partnership with Westport’s VFW Post 399 in sponsoring their monthly American Red Cross Blood Drives at the Joseph J. Clinton VFW Hall on Riverside Avenue.

Our first sponsorship is scheduled for Wednesday, October 23 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

There are two ways to participate:

1. Sign-up to donate blood on-line at redcrossblood.org or through the American Red Cross Blood Donor App.

2. Volunteer to help greet, sign in and serve refreshments to donors.

Please contact Y’s Men Blood Drive Coordinator Jay Dirnberger at jaydirnberger@gmail.com

Donating blood is one of the easiest and most important ways we can support our community.

Please join your fellow Y’s Men in giving the gift of life.

Can You See This?

You may be able to read this but there are many others who need help, and you can give it to them.

Please bring your unused glasses, whether prescription or just readers, and drop them in the donation box at the meeting tomorrow.

The more pairs you bring, the more people you help, so bring those unused glasses with you tomorrow, or you will have to answer to Jon Fox.
