Kostya Kennedy, Author of Book on Jackie Robinson,

Speaks to Y's Men Tomorrow

Kostya Kennedy

Kostya Kennedy is a noted, award-winning writer, TV analyst, and teacher who will speak to the Y's Men this Thursday, September 12, about his book True: The Four Seasons of Jackie Robinson.

Described as an unconventional biography, the book focuses on four transformative years in Robinson’s athletic and public life: 1946, his first year playing in the essentially all-white minor leagues for the Montreal Royals; 1949, when he won the Most Valuable Player Award in his third season as a Brooklyn Dodger; 1956, his final season in major league baseball, when he played valiantly despite his increasing health struggles; and 1972, the year of his untimely death.

Through it all, Robinson remained true to the effort and the mission, true to his convictions and contradictions. Kennedy has also written noted books about Joe DiMaggio and Pete Rose.

Similar to all Thursday morning meetings, we gather in Hoskins Hall downstairs in the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East in Westport. Social hour runs from 9:00 am to 10:00 am; business meeting begins at 10:00 am; speaker starts at 10:30 am and finishes no later than 11:30 am.

Current Events Discussion Group Meets Tuesdays and Fridays

A new Current Events Discussion Group, led by Y's Man Tony Pranzo, is meeting from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Tuesdays and Fridays at The Westport Library. Limited to about five Y's Men each, there are two separate groups. One meets on Tuesdays and the other meets on Fridays.

Tony has compiled a list of nearly two dozen topics for discussion. Each group can select a subject or come up with one on their own. Click here to review topics suggested by Tony.

All Y's Men are invited to attend meetings of the Current Events Discussion Group. For more information, contact Tony Pranzo at tpranzo@yahoo.com or text him at 203-503-7150.

Y's Men Travel Group Meets Monday at Noon

The next meeting of the Y's Men Travel Group will be on Monday, September 16 from Noon to 1:30 pm in Rooms 109-110 at the Church. This is a change in time and room location from our normal meetings.

This will be a special meeting so even if you’re not a card-carrying Travel Group member you are most welcome to join us.

At this meeting several of our Group’s members will be presenting photos of their travels and talking about those images. Should be fun!

If you plan to bring a lunch just be aware that, depending on the numbers attending, we may not have room to set up tables so bring food that you can hold in your lap, or just eat before or after the meeting.

Additions continue to be made to the Y's Men Travel Reference Doc, located here.

For information about the Y’s Men Travel Group, or to be added to the group’s email distribution list, please contact Art Mann, mannart03@gmail.com.

Y's Man Steve Taranko Helps Bring

Ukraine Art Exhibit to Senior Center

Ukraine Art Exhibit at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

The new Ukraine Art Exhibit at the Westport Center for Senior Activities features the unique War Stamps designs of Ukraine and other artifacts. Y's Man Stephan Taranko helped bring the exhibit to the Center. It is located in a display case halfway down the main aisle, and will be in place until the end of September.

In addition, Steve, along with Ross Voytovych and Mark Yurkiw, has spent nearly three years sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine through the generosity of the people of Fairfield County. The exhibit features the now world-famous stamp designs that have also helped Ukraine fund its war expenditures. They hope to continue to send medical equipment, and other needed supplies to Ukraine. The exhibit further explains their humanitarian efforts.
