Camp Season is Just Around the Corner
Message from
Director of Montessori Enrichment Tracey Gable

Tracey Gable
Despite the recent snow days and cold temperatures, summer camp is only three months away! That means that registration for Camp Montessori is in full swing. And if you register for five or more weeks by March 31, you will receive 10% off.

While many of the Camp Montessori traditions will remain the same, we will be traveling to new places on our field trips, and offering academic tutoring during the camp day for children who might benefit from it.

Also making a comeback is our Counselor-In-Training Program. We are excited to announce that we are accepting applications for 15- and 16-year-old students to participate in an intensive two-week course, followed by a summer-long internship here at WMS.

I encourage you to visit the Camp Montessori web page or contact me directly with any questions you may have regarding our programming.

Summer camp is a time to lay the worries of the school year aside and take the opportunity to experience, explore and grow outside of the classroom. We hope that you will join us this summer as we forge new and exciting adventures.

Anxiously awaiting summer...

Secure Your Spot for 2019-20: Re-enroll Today

If you plan to re-enroll your child for the 2019-20 school year, please do so as soon as possible. The re-enrollment deadline has passed and we are now in the process of offering spots to new applicants. Some programs fill up quickly, and we would like to give priority to our current students. Please email [email protected] if you have questions about the re-enrollment process (or if your family does NOT plan to return to WMS), or  contact the business office  if you have financial questions.

After-School Enrichment Addition: Irish Dancing

For the last 32 years, the McHugh School of Irish Dance has provided instruction to hundreds of children throughout the Delaware Valley. We're pleased to add McHugh to our spring after-school enrichment lineup to provide  beginner Irish dance instruction.

Classes will run on Tuesdays for eight weeks starting March 12. Register today!  Please contact Tracey Gable with any questions.

Register for Spring Break Camp

With spring break less than four weeks away, our spring break camp staff is preparing all sorts of fun for the children who will spend their week at WMS. If you plan  to take advantage of our spring break camp, please register today.
WMS Math League Team in State Finals

Congratulations to our seventh-grade Math League team, which has advanced to the state finals! The meet will take place April 11 in Dover. Congratulations also to  Jack Allen and Logan Ranji, who will receive individual awards for placing second and third in the region.
Eco-Student Council Update

In November, we introduced you to the Eco-Student Council, which is leading WMS's commitment to sustainability, reducing energy costs and protecting the environment. Since they first met in November, they have been focused on raising awareness about energy use and recycling. Additionally, this week, WMS received a grant from  Pathways to Green Schools that will support purchasing new light fixtures and LED lighting.

In the 6-9 classroom, the Eco-Student Council's work has led to a new "energy saver" job. Each day, the student assigned to this role monitors when lights are needed and is responsible for turning lights off when the classroom is not in use. The 9-12 council representatives have been busy preparing slides about the benefits of LED lighting and our school's commitment to converting to LED lighting  to share with the WMS community via the digital display screens around the school.

Meanwhile our middle school representatives are working to promote recycling around the school through song. Council representatives Addie Laster and Lydia Snyder have composed a song that they plan to share with younger students to bring awareness to what can be recycled.

Reinforcing Spanish Language Through the Senses

If your child has come home singing and clapping to "bate, bate, chocolate," it's a sign Spanish lessons are rubbing off on him or her.  In Spanish class, WMS students across almost all levels are engaging a variety of senses to help them commit various Spanish words, phrases and verbs to memory.

Bate Bate Chocolate - Spanish song

  • At the 6-9 level, students have been learning authentic Spanish songs and games to reinforce new vocabulary words. "Bate, bate, chocolate," which translates to "beat, beat chocolate," is a great way to prepare students for an upcoming Spanish class activity: making hot chocolate (chocolate caliente)! All the ingredients will be presented in Spanish and students will repeat the steps involved in making the hot chocolate using their Spanish vocabulary.
  • In Primary, students have been learning their shapes (figuras geométricas) in Spanish. For Valentine's Day, students made shape necklaces to share with their parents. They have also been practicing their shapes in Spanish by creating them with their bodies, and will explore shape bingo and hopscotch to reinforce Spanish shape names. "Activities that encourage creating shapes with hands and bodies help [students] to understand shapes in a concrete way," said Spanish teacher Ana Brown.
