Understanding Social Media Risks
Monday, July 30
10 am - Class | 11 am - Learning Lab
You're invited to join Natasha Gilliam for Social Media Safety. Natasha is a doctoral student at Liberty University. As part of her commitment to serving the community, she is excited to offer a class tailored for older adults, focusing on social media safety.
In this class, you’ll learn how to set up and navigate Facebook to connect with friends and stay informed with updates from the Wake Forest Center for Active Aging.
We’ll also cover essential tips for using social media safely and understanding the potential risks involved.
Join instructor Natasha Gilliam to explore the world of social media with confidence!
The class will address the following:
-
Scams: Fake friend requests, messages claiming you won a prize, or links asking for passwords.
- Privacy Issues: Oversharing (e.g., posting your address or vacation plans publicly). • Hacked Accounts: Weak passwords leading to someone taking over your account.
- Discuss real-world consequences: “A scammer might trick you into sending money, or a public post about your vacation could alert burglars.”
- Suspicious messages.
Please note: Classroom instruction begins at 10 a.m. followed by a learning lab at 11 a.m. During the learning lab, instructors provide one-on-one hands-on instruction demonstrating effective safety practices, setting adjustments, and more.
There is no cost for this class.
Please bring your iPhone or tablet to class.

Low Vision Rehab Solutions
Low Vision Rehab Solutions is a company that serves individuals with
vision loss who struggle to safely and independently complete their daily activities.
Our low-vision occupational therapist will meet seniors here in their homes, evaluate them, and carry out interventions to help them with things like reading, writing, identifying dials on their appliances, and assistive technology use. We offer virtual counseling services for seniors with difficulty adjusting to vision loss. Our services are covered by insurance, just like any outpatient OT and PT service.
We also have a foundation that donates equipment recommended by therapists that aren't covered by insurance to those who can't afford them (e.g. iPads and magnifiers).
We have a physical office at 100 Parkway Office Court, Cary, 27518 for administrative purposes, but therapists see clients in their homes to facilitate access to care by removing transportation barriers.
Summary of what we do:
● In-home OT services
● Training on assistive technology
● Lighting & home environment adaptations
● Functional strategies for daily activities

Do you know how much our knitters contribute to the community? Last year alone, they donated over 300 blankets, more than 250 hats and scarves, and over 25 shawls to local churches, Project Linus, Myra's Angels, WakeMed and more.
Please consider donating the following items to continue supporting these groups:
● Worsted weight - acrylic - of all colors and cotton yarn
● Natural cotton batting for quilts
