Communion During the Spread of COVID-19 Virus
Dear St. Mary's Family,

The coronavirus COVID-19 is spreading through the U.S., causing anxiety for many of us, particularly as it relates to public gatherings. Here are the precautions we're taking at St. Mary's:

  • You are always free to receive communion only in one kind (e.g. only the bread). The doctrine of concomitance states that since Christ is indivisible, no one part of Christ's substance can be divided. Thus, Christ's body can not be separated from his blood which means that Christ's full presence is in each element fully.
  • From a scientific perspective, the safest way to receive the wine is by sipping from the chalice.
  • The least sanitary way to receive communion is by self-intinction (the practice of the communicant dipping the host into the wine). Please do not dip the host into the chalice. We have very few at St. Mary's who do this, but due to the risks involved with this virus, I have instructed the clergy and chalice bearers to enforce this guideline beginning this Sunday.
  • If you strongly wish to receive both the bread and the wine and do not wish to sip from the cup, keep the host in your hand, and the chalice bearer will intinct for you and place the host on your tongue.
  • The clergy and chalice bearer(s) will wash our hands immediately before the service begins. We will also apply hand sanitizer just before the altar is set up for communion, and again before distributing the elements.
  • Consider exchanging the Peace with your neighbors verbally or with a head nod, rather than with a hand shake or a hug.

Many bishops in affected regions are instructing the clergy to serve communion only in one kind, and are prohibiting touching at the Peace. If the virus arrives in Kansas City, I expect that Bishop Field will follow suit and issue similar guidelines.

In the meantime, wash your hands, stay home if you're sick, and remain calm! See you soon in church!

Peace,
Fr. Charles
