Georgia Parent Climate Survey
The Georgia Department of Education has released the Georgia Parent Survey. In order to recieve a CCRPI star rating we must have adequate parent participation.  Schools that have no participation in the survey will receive a 0.00 score towards the CCRPI School Star Climate Rating. CCRPI is Georgia's annual tool for measuring how well its schools, districts, and the state itself are preparing students for the next educational level. It provides a comprehensive roadmap to help educators, parents, and community members promote and improve college and career readiness for all students. Schools with less than 15 parent surveys will be designated as Low Participation (LP) and the results will not be calculated. Either way, no parent or low parent participation will negatively impact a school's School Climate Star Rating. Please remember that schools with no or low participation on the surveys will not be permitted to receive the five (5) additional points on Personalized Climate for research/evidence-based programs/interventions. This also applies to the 0.5 point awarded to the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) "Exceeding the Bar" indicator. Our current star rating is a 4 out of 5!

The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphones or tablet. For parents that do not have access to the internet, please contact the front office to schedule a time to come to Briarlake to complete the survey.

Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online. The URL address for the Georgia Parent Survey is posted below.

Our completion date of the survey is Monday, October 31st. We encourage ALL parents to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of Briarlake's School Climate Star Rating! The link below will be posted on the school website and send out in the Briarlake email blast.

DeKalb County ESPLOST Plan - Community Meetings This Week
DeKalb County School District (DSCD) has released the final proposal for middle and high school feeder patterns, re-clustering attendance areas, additions to schools and new/replacement schools.  This proposal includes a 750 seat addition to Lakeside bringing it to a 2,500 student school. These new plans still include approximately 250 students being moved out of the Lakeside cluster. Therefore redistricting will occur in our cluster unless our community remains vigilant in expressing our desire to keep our cluster boundaries intact.  It has not yet been decided where these 250 students will come from. These future changes will most likely impact students who are currently in 5th grade and below.

Stay tuned for future updates on our Lakeside cluster's unified response to any proposed changes to our cluster's attendance zones. Our Lakeside cluster is committed to staying together and intact and is actively exploring creative solutions, such as exploring a 9th Grade Academy option, to help make that possible. Please contact Debbie Gerstle, Briarlake School Council Chair, with questions or to get involved:

DeKalb County School Board Vote on ESPLOST project, Monday, December 5th

Georgia PTA Opposes Amendment 1 ("Vote No on One")

Early Voting Begins This Monday, 10/16

November 8th
The members of the Georgia PTA do not represent special interest groups; we represent every school, every child, every parent, and every teacher in this state.  We must speak up to advocate for every child, all 1.7 million, who are enrolled in public education.  We speak up for all those who want accountability in how their taxpayer dollars are spent.
Georgia PTA supports existing Georgia law  OCGA 20-14-41 which permits the Georgia Department of Education to provide assistance to struggling schools deemed "focus" or "priority."  Rather than endorsing an amendment which diminishes the power of our votes, eliminates accountability to taxpayers, increases the size of state government, and has failed in every other state where it has been attempted, the State of Georgia should charge and support our elected State Superintendent of Schools to fully leverage existing laws for intervention to aid struggling schools.

Where Amendment 1 goes beyond existing law 20-14-41 is the Governor-appointed Superintendent of OSD Schools and school funding. This political appointee would have the sole power to select the OSD schools from the list of struggling schools and determine the interventions prescribed for these OSD schools - including closure or turning over the school building to a charter school. These powers would come without any oversight, as the Superintendent would report directly to the Governor. Amendment 1 would also change the Constitution of the State of Georgia to allow for local taxpayer money to be used for state charter schools, to transfer locally-funded buildings and equipment to state charter schools, and to allow private management companies to charge a 3% "administration" fee to local districts for the privilege of taking over a school.

Our schools are a reflection of the communities they serve. Every school on the Governor's list has over 80% of its students living in poverty.

Simply put, Amendment 1 takes control away from local communities and places it in the hands of appointed state bureaucrats and private interests. Amendment 1 uses a flawed grading system to justify transferring local funds and buildings to state control. Amendment 1 adds an additional layer of government bureaucracy to our school system.
