WEEK ELEVEN UPDATE

Nevada survived the First House Committee Passage Deadline of April 11th!

While 280 bills did not make the deadline, there are still over 700 bills remaining to meet the First House Passage Deadline on April 22nd. Unlike previous weeks of this Legislative Session, there were no committee hearings in Week Eleven, as committee meetings focused on budget closings, not bills. Similar activity is expected throughout Week Twelve.

Legislative budget committees have been working at a fast pace to close budgets ahead of the May 1st Economic Forum. The Governor recommended over $16 million in funding each year for the biennium for the Nevada Knowledge Account which supports economic development related research for UNLV, UNR and DRI. However, in Monday's budget closing, the Legislature recommended only $2.5 million be allocated each year. These disparities were a common theme throughout the week as the Legislature strives to be conservative with budget allocations.

REBELS IN ACTION

4/14-18/25 - While there was very little hearing testimony this week due to the Legislature’s focus on the First House Committee Passage Deadline, Rebels are always in action.

One example of this can be found in our economic impact.

Southern Nevada’s economy generates nearly three-quarters of the state’s gross domestic product and a similar share of tax revenues that support communities statewide.

Nevada’s continued prosperity depends upon a pipeline of talented, industrious, and innovative professionals – the type of graduates produced by UNLV.

First Graduates of Midwifery Program Ready to Address Maternal Health Needs

According to the American Midwifery Certification Board, fewer than 70 certified nurse midwives are available in Nevada for obstetric and gynecological care.
