Hi there!
It's time for Week 12 of your Summer Share. Below you'll find the bag contents for this week, for both the Large and Small shares, as well as the Small Vegetarian Share.
This week is the BLT Bag! All the Omnivore shares will get a pound of nitrate-free bacon. If you're not going to cook it all up at once but prefer to use a strip or two for cooking, check out this awesome tip:
The Kitchn's A Better Way to Freeze Bacon
.
In the rest of the bag you'll see lettuce, slicing tomatoes, a bulb of kohlrabi, two green peppers, three Hot Hungarian Peppers, a pair of zucchini (or other summer squash), six apples (a mix of Zestar, Ginger Gold, Paula Red and Early Gold varieties). We're still waiting to hear from the orchards about the harvest planned for tomorrow-- you'll be getting either either plums, peaches or a cantaloupe, so you'll get a little surprise once you arrive to get your bag!
Instead of bacon, the Vegetarian Shares will get some Roma tomatoes, an onion and four ears of sweet corn. The Large Shares will have a big upgrade: corn, cherry tomatoes, carrots, eggplant, basil and chorizo.
Great trick to use up lots of tomatoes:
slow roast them
. Once you've done that, you can whip it up into a rich tomato sauce for pasta, or pour into labeled containers for the freezer. If you have just plain ole too many tomatoes, check out
Fresh Fork Market's Tomato Guide
, with lots of tricks, recipes and storage tips.

Clockwise from top left: Ginger Gold, Zestar, Paula Red & Early Gold.
GINGER GOLD—
bright yellow-green with a little peach splash. Keeps shape when cooked, so good for pies and tarts. Also does not easily brown, so good for slices in lunch boxes or salads.
ZESTAR—
Equal parts red and bright yellow, larger and rounder than Paula Red. Named for zesty crunch— best for eating raw. Keeps well in refrigeration (for lunches/salads), and good on a cheeseboard.
PAULA RED—
squat, shiny, red and yellow to mostly red. Tart. Very good for applesauce (doesn’t need any extra sugar), or eating right away. White flesh becomes mealy with long term storage/bruises, so use soon.
EARLY GOLD—
bright yellow-green. A little brown around stem. Good for eating raw, but ripens quickly, so use for sauce if it gets soft.
