Student Holiday Concerts at Briarlake: 12/9 and 12/13
Two opportunities are coming up soon to see our Briarlake students show off what they have been learning in music!
1) On this Friday, December 9th at 9 a.m., our 4th and 5th grade Band and Orchestra will be performing at a school assembly in the cafetorium! Parents are welcome and highly encouraged to attend!
2) The Briarlake Holiday Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 13th at 6pm in the cafeteria.  It will only include Pre-K, K, 1st and 2nd grade, as the 3rd-5th graders will be performing in February in a separate performance.
We look forward to seeing you at these two great musical events!
As We Near the Holidays...Opportunities to Give
Holiday Giving at Briarlake...

The holiday season is here! Soon your room parents will be reaching out to you to collect donations for gifts for your homeroom teachers and paraprofessionals. Please follow your room parent's instructions regarding how and when to contribute to your class gift.
In addition, if you are interested and able, please also consider donating to any of these additional Briarlake holiday gift funds. Collection bins for these gift funds will be in the front office at the PTA info station by the front door and will be checked daily until Friday, December 16th. Many, many thanks in advance for your generosity and support!

Briarlake Elementary School Staff Holiday Gift Fund: This holiday gift fund shows our appreciation to all of the Briarlake staff who work outside of our classrooms or who serve the entire student body. These individuals dedicate themselves to making Briarlake the best and often miss out on the appreciation our homeroom teachers receive.

Briarlake Child-in-Need Holiday Collection: There are children and families within our own Briarlake community who are struggling financially and could use our help during this season of giving. Our Briarlake counseling team will use these funds to help purchase items for these children during the holidays. At Briarlake, we strive to be a loving and caring community.

Gift Cards for Holiday Staff Party: Every year our Briarlake staff gets together for a holiday event and gift cards are given away as raffle and door prizes. Gift cards to area stores and restaurants are always appreciated if you would like to contribute to this fun event for our staff.

U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots - This week only

Girl Scout Troop 12580 is collaborating with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to conduct a toy drive at Briarlake Elementary this holiday season.  Please help by donating a new, unwrapped toy for a child in need.  A collection bin will be set up outside the front office and donations will be accepted through  December 9th . Thank you very much for your generosity!
Please note that this is a separate effort than the collection for Briarlake students in need described in the previous section of the blast.

Toys Needed
  • We need new and unwrapped toys appropriate for boys and girls from newborn to 12 years old.
  • We always run short of toys for ages 0 to 2 and 10 and older.  Suggested toys for the older children include makeup kits, hair dryers, watches, colognes, perfumes, basketballs, footballs and other sporting equipment.
  • Bicycles are always in very high demand and our supplies never meet this demand. Please keep in mind that we cannot distribute a bicycle without a helmet.

Marcus Autism Center Study
Children between 8 and 12 years without Autism needed
Researchers from the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at the Marcus Autism Center are reaching out for help with their brain development study.   By the end of December, in order to complete their control group sample, they need additional 15 boys without autism spectrum disorder, age 8-12.
Kids who already participated in their study enjoyed it.  It was like a science project for them - experiencing the MRI and learning about how their brain pictures were taken by the MRI machine.  Also, they were happy to receive a diploma with photos of their brain, and a thank you gift of $65!
If you are interested in helping the Marcus Autism Center researchers, please email
"Today, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects 1 in 68 children in Georgia.  At Marcus Autism Center, we are dedicated not only providing exceptional clinical care to kids with ASD, but also to transforming the future of ASD through research.
We are looking for children between 8 and 12 years of age without ASD to participate in simple and safe research studies.  Children without ASD provide an important comparison group that helps researchers understand how ASD affects social behavior and brain development.  During the studies, we will use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the parts of the brain that are active when kids process information about what other people are doing, thinking or feeling.
There is no cost to take part in a study.  Families who participate will receive compensation for their involvement and help change the future for kids with ASD.
Email or call 404-785-7600 for more information."
