You're bound to see people (even just virtually) in a few weeks that you don't connect with that often - relatives, high school or college friends, parents' friends, neighbors, and more. Do they know that you're in b-school and what sorts of summer internships you're pursuing? The person sitting next to you at the dinner table could help to connect you to a dream job. As you strike up conversation, look out for these details, and don't forget to have your contact info handy.

To-do's this week

Got 5 minutes? Think of at least 3 existing connections (or new contacts you want to make in a specific role/company) who you'd want to meet or get in contact with over the break.

Got 30 minutes? Set up Google Alerts for specific companies so you'll get updates over the break.

Got an hour? Add your relatives / colleagues / classmates on LinkedIn. Do an advanced search for people in your area and start reaching out to them.

Research roles over the break

The ProValues exercise will be particularly valuable as it provides a list of networking questions that you can ask others over the break to learn more about the roles that you're interested in.

As you continue connecting with others and learn new information about potential roles and/or find new and interesting paths, update your ProValues to better gauge the fit of these roles with your specific values.

Learn through LinkedIn location search

Use LinkedIn to remind yourself of who lives nearby or might be back in town over the Thanksgiving holiday. Click here for instructions on how to use LinkedIn Advanced search to find people in your area.

You can also narrow down your search by filtering by industry, firm, or role (tutorial here). Once you find out who's nearby, schedule time with them in advance.

Remember, you could also be a great resource for those around you considering an MBA!

Send a few quick hellos!

If you're connecting with people over the holidays, follow-up with a personalized note and connect on LinkedIn. If you weren't able to catch someone's email over dinner, ask a mutual connection. Consider adding them to your email list for people who will receive updates from you going forward.

Update your LinkedIn profile
