Lights, Camera, Action! The first month of the Legislative Session closed with the busiest week yet. From multiple Rebels visiting Carson City, to concerns about Medicaid cuts, to one of the film bills getting its first hearing - there’s a lot to unpack this week...(more)

2/24/25 – Presentation, Senate Committee on Education, NSHE Chancellor Patricia Charlton, University Police Southern Command Chief Arnold Vasquez, and University Police Northern Command Chief Eric James, presented best practices developed by the Chancellor’s ad hoc Committee on Public Safety related to campus safety measures at NSHE’s eight institutions

2/24/25 – University Police Southern Command Chief Arnold Vazquez and University Police Northern Command Chief Eric James visit with each other after their joint presentation to the Senate Committee on Education 

2/25/25 – Presentation, Assembly Committee on Education, NSHE Chancellor Patricia Charlton presented the State of the System, highlighting progress made, strategies in place for continued improvement, and areas targeted for growth across each of NSHE's eight institutions

2/25/25 – Behavioral Health Day, Assemblyman Reuben D’Silva visited with BeHERE NV Executive Director Sara Hunt and Associate Director of Technical Assistance and Policy Ashley Noel Pruitt at the Nevada State Legislature building

2/25/25 – Presentation, Assembly Committee on Education, NSHE Chancellor Patricia Charlton, University Police Southern Command Chief Arnold Vasquez, and University Police Northern Command Chief Eric James, presented best practices developed by the Chancellor’s ad hoc Committee on Public Safety related to campus safety measures at NSHE’s eight institutions to this committee, similar to the presentation made to the Senate Committee on Education earlier in the week

2/25/25 – Presentation, Assembly Committee on Education, Leonardo Benavides, UNLV Director of State Government Affairs, and Dr. Lawrence Weekly, Chief of Staff of College of Southern Nevada, highlighted strategies for continuing to build and strengthen relationships between Nevada’s higher education institutions and the state’s primary and secondary education communities during the NSHE State of the System presentation

2/25/25 – AB217 (Support), Assembly Committee on Education, Boyd Law School Emerita Professor Sylvia Lazos testified in support of AB217 which would restrict federal immigration officials’ access to certain Nevada school district facilities and data

2/26/25 – AB149 (Presentation), Assembly Committee on Judiciary, Riana Durrett, Executive Director of the UNLV Cannabis Policy Institute, presented information relative to securing financial support for developing and promoting research relative to medical and recreational cannabis legalization, regulation, and administration

2/26/25 – AB149 (Presentation), Assembly Committee on Judiciary, Dr. Marla Stafford, Director of Research of the UNLV Cannabis Policy Institute, detailed the wide range of important public health, medical, economic, and administrative research projects the Institute supports and would like to support

2/26/25 – AB149 (Support), Assembly Committee on Judiciary, Michelle Tomasino, Director of the UNLV Office of Clinical Trials, shared important public health benefits the Institute seeks to illuminate through continued research

2/26/25 – AB149 (Support), Assembly Committee on Judiciary, Dr. Jacob Erickson, UNLV Professor of Sociology, testified in support of the bill which would secure financial support for the Cannabis Policy Institute, and emphasized the economic and commercial benefits of continued research

2/26/25 – SB85 (Presentation), Senate Growth and Infrastructure Committee, UNLV Public Health Professor Max Gakh, Statistical Transparency of Policing (STOP) Project Manager Dr. Bertille Mavegam, and Acute Care Surgery Chief for the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, Dr. Deborah Kuhls, made a presentation to the Committee highlighting the benefits of making certain recording, retention, and reporting requirements related to traffic stops permanent for law enforcement agencies

2/26/25 – SB165 (Presentation), Senate Committee on Commerce and Labor, Dr. Tara Raines, Professor with the UNLV Department of Educational Psychology & Higher Education, and Dr. Michelle Paul, Assistant Vice President of Mental & Behavioral Health Training at UNLV, helped present SB 165, a bill aimed at building a more robust Nevada mental health workforce and better serving the state’s unique mental health needs

2/26/25 – SB165 (Support), Senate Committee on Commerce and Labor, Leonardo Benavides, UNLV Director of State Government Affairs, testified in support of SB 165, emphasizing the important role Nevada’s institutions of higher education hold in helping to prepare mental health professionals

2/27/25 – AB238 (Support), Committee on Revenue, Vice President Constance Brooks, UNLV Office of Government and Community Engagement, testified in support of the Nevada Studio Infrastructure Jobs and Workforce Training Act, and was joined by NSHE Chancellor Patty Charlton and College of Southern Nevada Vice President Clarissa Cota

 

The Nevada Legislature celebrated UNLV Student Government Day on February 27th, with a variety of programming and networking opportunities throughout the day. Members of CSUN and GPSA were in Carson City to advocate for UNLV students and to demonstrate just exactly how #RebelsMakeItHappen!

  • 3/4/25, 8am, Assembly Government Affairs Committee, AB191 - A bill that authorizes collective bargaining between NSHE and professional employees.


  • 3/4/25, 4pm, Assembly Revenue Committee, AB28 - A bill that extends the sunset to allow RTC to ask a ballot question regarding taxes from 2024 to 2028 to fund transit services.
