Week 5 of the General Session

With just two weeks left, things at the Capitol are busier than ever. I am honored to serve each member of my district and create policy that will improve the lives of families and individuals. You can follow along with the process at le.utah.gov.

Largest Tax Cut in State History

Over the last two years, the Legislature reduced taxes by nearly $300 million. This session, we are proposing an additional $400 million in tax relief. H.B. 54 Tax Revisions will be heard in the House Revenue and Taxation Committee early next week and provides tax relief to individuals and families in all stages of life by:

  • Cutting the income tax rate from 4.85% to 4.65%.

  • Expanding social security tax credit eligibility to individuals earning between $0 to $75,000 per year.

  • Providing a tax benefit for pregnancy by allowing a double dependent exemption for children the year of their birth.

  • Increasing the earned income tax credit (EITC) from 15% to 20% of the federal credit.

Celebrating Women's Suffrage

On February 14th, 1870 Seraph Young of Utah became the first woman to vote under the equal rights law. In honor of her memory and to celebrate this historic event, our female legislators and staff wore purple. I am grateful to work with each of these amazing women.

The Homeless Coalition

The Homeless Coalition in Utah works to help the homeless in Salt Lake City. I am grateful I was able to meet with some of their team.

Speaker Pro Tempore

This session I am honored to be the Speaker Pro Tem. This means that when the Speaker is absent I preside over the debate and voting of bills in the House Chamber.

Cultural Arts

Recently I received the Cultural Arts Champion award from the State Cultural Arts Alliance. I am so honored!

Visits from Utah's Congressional Delegation

This week, Congressmen Blake Moore and Burgess Owens visited our caucus. I always appreciate hearing from our federal delegation.

Realtor's Association

This week I met with the Realtor's Association in the Rotunda of the Capitol to discuss Utah's housing issues. I'm grateful for all they do to help with this complicated situation.

Town Halls

This month I had two Town Hall meetings in both Taylorsville and West Jordan. Thank you for coming and contributing to the great turnout. I appreciate hearing your questions and input and hope to see you at my next Town Hall.

Outdoor Recreation

Utah is known for its world-class outdoor recreation opportunities. We are blessed with unique landscapes and natural wonders, from the greatest snow on earth to our beautiful red rock canyons. Our natural resources are intertwined with our quality of life, which is why we’re committed to preserving them. Listen to the latest episode of the House podcast to learn what’s being done to protect our quality of life.

Westland Elementary

This week I had the opportunity to speak to a group of fourth-graders from Westland Elementary School at the Capitol. I told them about some current legislation, including my bill concerning Highway Patrol dogs, H.B. 418 Canine Boday Armor. I love meeting students from my district!

Check out the rest of my legislation here.

Unified Fire Officials

This week the Unified Fire Officials of Utah visited the Capitol and I had the privilege of thanking them for their service.

Limiting Government Overreach

HB 281: Social Credit Score Amendments prohibits governmental entities in Utah from using, enforcing, or providing data for a system that discriminates or gives preferential treatment to an individual. Similarly, SB 96: Fiduciary Duty Modifications ensures any state investment is done without regard to political, environmental, or social considerations of companies. Both bills passed committee this week and will be voted on in their perspective bodies.

New Parking at the Capitol Coming Soon

As I shared with you last week, I was recently interviewed for a video about the new parking lot currently being built at the Capitol. This new parking lot will help provide more parking space for our visitors and help traffic decrease in the nearby neighborhoods. We want you to come visit us on Capitol Hill and I hope this new parking will make it easier for you!

Check out the final video here.

As always, please know you are always welcome to visit me at the Capitol and join me on the House Floor.

To schedule a time to visit, contact my intern Gillian Marcucci: (385)-420-3078 or [email protected]

I would love to hear from you!
