Four ways to get a head start on fall recruiting

,

As you jump back into school, it is helpful to take some time to think about what you want!

If you got a full-time offer, should you take it? If you didn't, how should you determine what to pursue next? How can you use what you've learned this summer to get there?

This is the perfect time to revisit your ProValues exercise. Not only can you identify how your values and preferences may have changed since the beginning of the summer, but you can also identify what you want to pursue when fall recruiting starts up. If you want to bounce some ideas off our team, we're happy to offer a complimentary 30-minute session to our 100 Week Sprint subscribers. Contact us to set up time.

To-do's this week
Got 5 minutes? Look over your previous ProValues results and make a quick hypothesis about whether your feelings - both about this job, and about your overall career values - have changed since summer began.
Got 30 minutes? Update your ProValues information and test your summer internship and new roles you're considering.
Got an hour? Use your ProValues results to clarify whether your current position is one you'd like to pursue further, as well as what you'd like to negotiate for when your offer comes through.
Four ways to get a head start on fall recruiting

1. Revisit your ProValues Exercise: A little over a month ago, we asked you to set expectations for when you had just begun your internship. Now that you have finished, this is the perfect time to revisit the exercise; you can identify whether your initial impressions about your internship were correct, along with whether your own thoughts about what you value in a work environment has changed.

But how can you use this information? Whether you have an offer or not, this is the time to stress-test what makes you happy to decide if you want to take the offer. Start testing other options too - are there new things you have thought about exploring? This is a low risk way to achieve that.

You can start leveraging your profile right now as you conduct informational interviews over the summer, and then use it further to narrow down which recruiters you want to talk to come fall. Click here for a reminder of how ProValues works, and get started on identifying what you value in a job - as well as what you don't like so much.

What do you want to negotiate for?

When the time comes that you do get a full-time offer, whether this summer or later in the year, you want to be ready to negotiate. We'll soon discuss how to negotiate your offer - but in the short term, take the time to identify what you want to negotiate for!

As you complete the exercise now and continue clarifying what is important to you in a job, pay close attention to those factors that you might be able to have influence over.

1. Location: if you've always wanted to work internationally, consider trying to negotiate an assignment overseas, or even the opportunity to be abroad indefinitely.

Read on for more thoughts on specific areas where you might want to negotiate your offer - whether it's from your internship firm, or from another company down the road.
