WEEK SEVEN UPDATE


While Spring Break normally means a break from class for Rebels, some chose to spend their break in Carson City this week. On Monday, Boyd Law students, staff, and faculty celebrated Boyd Law Day, including a reception at the Governor’s Mansion. Tuesday marked the beginning of UNLV Honor Days at the Legislature, with students, staff, and faculty from the Honors College visiting Carson City for three days of engagement with legislators and the legislative process. UNLV BOYD SCHOOL OF LAW DAY AT THE LEGISLATURE


March 17th was UNLV Boyd School of Law Day at the Legislature provided numerous opportunities for students and faculty to engage with legislators and legislative hearings, as well as with UNLV alumni serving in numerous related legislative roles, and more.

UNLV HONORS COLLEGE DAYS AT THE LEGISLATURE

 

UNLV Honors College Days at the Legislature took place March 18th - 20th, taking the classroom up to Carson City. The time spent at the Legislature provides Honors students with opportunities to understand how policy is shaped, engage with lawmakers, and experience civic engagement in action.

3/17/25 – AB337 (Support), Assembly Committee on Health and Human Services, Jacob Ginsburg, UNLV Boyd Law School student and Government and Community Engagement Law Extern, testified in support of AB337, a bill aiming to strengthen Nevada’s infrastructure for early diagnosis, treatment, and research of dementia, emphasizing the important role of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine in training and research 

3/17/25 – SB290 (Support), Senate Committee on Growth and Infrastructure, Le Benavides, UNLV Director of State Government Affairs, testified in support of AB290, detailing UNLV’s commitment to campus safety, involvement in researching pathways towards a safer and more reliable public transit environment, and emphasizing the many students and staff who depend on public transportation

3/19/25 – SB322, Senate Committee on Education, Patricia Charlton, Chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), testified in support of SB 322, a bill requiring increased professional development training standards for the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada, aiming to ensure the highest standards and expectations of accountability, transparency, quality, and trust

3/19/25 – SB322 (Support), Senate Committee on Education, Jose Ibarra Lira, UNLV Political Science student and College of Liberal Arts CSUN representative, testified in support of SB322, emphasizing student dependence on the professional, accountable, and ethical decision-making of the Board of Regents

3/19/25 - UNLV alumnus and Assemblymember Reuben D’Silva and Assemblymember Duy Nguyen (wearing pink in support of Reproductive Rights Day) with UNLV Government and Community Engagement Vice President Constance Brooks

3/20/25 – AB397 (Presentation), Assembly Education Committee, Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Patricia Charlton presented AB397, a bill which would relieve certain fee obligations for person having experienced homelessness, and thereby increasing access to higher education in Nevada

3/20/25 – AB397, Assembly Education Committee, Douglas Unger, UNLV Department of English Professor, testified on the impact AB397 could have on supporting and providing academic opportunities to Nevada’s at-risk populations.

3/20/2025 – AB328, Assembly Committee on Education, Dr. Tyler Parry, Associate Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies, provided testimony related to AB328, a bill establishing the Commission on Racial Equity and Social Justice, emphasizing the academic merits of the establishment of the Commission and of studying the economic, political, social, educational, and historical impacts of slavery, Jim Crow laws, and racial segregation in Nevada.

3/20/25, 1:30pm, AB328, Assembly Education Committee (Opposition) Patricia Charlton, Chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), provided testimony related to AB328, stressing NSHE’s support of the bill’s concept and recognition of its merits, but articulating NSHE’s position that it is not the appropriate entity to administer the Commission due to economic and neutrality concerns
