Week 70: August 22, 2026

In interviews, practice doesn't make perfect -
it makes you prepared

,

"Do not fool yourself into doing anything other than preparing as hard as you can. You want to leave it all out there on the field."

From Taylor, a very successful MBA student, BCG consultant, and friend of the 100 Week Sprint

Yes, it is the end of summer, and you're finishing up or have just finished your internship. You're tired. We understand. However, recruiting will soon ramp up. Even if you have an offer that you're excited about, there is no harm in considering your options.

As you prepare for networking conversations and interviews, you'll want to give it your best shot and consider as many questions, scenarios, and case studies as possible. That's where practice comes in; the best way to be up for whatever that interview throws your way is to do as many mock interviews as you possibly can. Here are some ways that you can put your best foot forward!

To-do's this week

Got 5 minutes? Make sure you've updated your calendar with all mock interview opportunities. If considering consulting, sign up for our case prep (see below)

Got 30 minutes? Brainstorm which fellow classmates or alumni would be willing to help with mock interviews, and reach out asking for time to connect.

Got an hour? Do a 30-minute mock interview on InterviewStream and watch the playback. We think you'll quickly see both what you do well and where you might make some changes.

How to be as prepared as possible

Although it's helpful to prepare for interview scenarios specific to certain industries, it's not enough just to know what kinds of questions and cases you can expect; you need to practice responding to all the hypotheticals that you can imagine coming your way during an interview! Because, we have never seen a client be TOO PREPARED for their interviews!

  • Research your target companies: Before recruiting begins, you should research target companies deeply rather than knowing dozens of companies superficially. For each company you are targeting, you should understand its business model, products, competitive position, recent news, strategy, and culture. Most importantly, you should be able to articulate why you want to work for that particular company in a way that feels personal. Remember, they know you are coming off your summer internship, so they will be wondering why you are back recruiting.
  • Leverage your peers, especially those from industries you're targeting: In addition to the official mock interview options offered by your school's Career Services, make an effort to find additional opportunities to practice your interview skills (including our support, see below). Seek out individuals who know your preferred companies especially well - classmates who interned there and alumni who are current employees will be especially helpful.
  • Use InterviewPrep: this tool allows you to record yourself completing practice interviews with a wide variety of industry specializations. Make no mistake, it is very awkward to watch a recording of yourself - but it is also enormously helpful, especially as you return to use this tool over and over! How much value could YOU create in an hour?

The reality is that career outcomes - responsibilities, compensation, optionality, and leverage - will be shaped by decisions you make and communicate now, not later. Over the years, our clients have found that career success rewards early, intentional planning. As one of our clients recently said, "I needed to talk to you sooner!" - the longer you wait, the harder it is to help.

If you are looking to invest in yourself and take more control of your career conversations, think about investing an hour with us to create a solid plan for your next career steps. This could include:

  • Create an action plan to negotiate your full-time offer, or decide whether you will even take it
  • Plan your outreach for networking to give you a head start on full-time recruiting
  • Finalize your narrative for full-time recruiting in order to optimize your results
  • Optimize your recruiting strategy based on our insights from numerous conversations covering consulting, banking, tech, entrepreneurship, PE, VC and investing banking
  • Strategize how you will get the most out of your 2nd year if taking your full-time offer
  • Decide on your Plan B (and even Plan C)
