Make a Start to Love Your Heart
This week's theme: Celebrate Heart Health Month & Be Kind to your Heart

You know that you have hundreds of different muscles in your body that enable you to perform vital functions such as moving, seeing and eating. Your heart is SO special that it is composed of a unique type of muscle known as “Cardiac muscle.”

Cardiac muscle is what makes our hearts beat. It acts as a pump to circulate oxygen and nutrients in your blood to the rest of your body. Like other muscles, it needs oxygen and nutrients, too. But when the arteries in your heart become diseased, the heart can't get the blood it needs to pump efficiently. (Kaiser Permanente)

We need to take actions to keep this important muscle healthy so it continues beating strong. Check out Kaiser Permanente’s advice on Healthy Heart Choices.

Action Item: Love your Heart and Get Moving!
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) recommends at least 2½ hours of physical activity each week, ideally just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. In addition, do muscle strengthening exercises 2 days a week.

Moving Through the Week:
The most accessible activity available is simply walking. It can be performed indoors or outdoors and in most any kind of weather. All the equipment you need is an appropriate pair of walking shoes with good support, especially at the arch and a flat sole . Here are some more tips from Healthline on power walking for health .
