Elevating the Paraprofessional: Designing a Scaffolded Teacher Assistant Certificate Program for Career Advancement and Impact

Faculty, Director of Teaching, Learning, and Faculty Development

This issue of NASET’s Working with Paraprofessional Series was written by Melissa Wells, EdD., BCASE, BCISE. It explores the design and implementation of a Teacher Assistant (TA) Certificate program that supports the professional growth and upward mobility of paraprofessionals in New York State. The program is structured to provide a scaffolded educational experience, emphasizing the importance of specific coursework designed to equip teaching assistants with the essential knowledge and skills required for their roles. The rationale for course selection and design is rooted in the need to build a strong foundation in key areas such as child development, culturally responsive teaching, and special education. The paper discusses how these courses collectively enhance the effectiveness of paraprofessionals, preparing them for more advanced roles and contributing to a more qualified and diverse teaching workforce.

“The Miracle Worker” is a 1962 American biographical film about Anne Sullivan, blind tutor to a specific person with a severe visual and hearing impairment. The screenplay by William Gibson is based on his 1959 play of the same title. Gibson's secondary source material was “The Story of My Life”, the 1903 autobiography of this person with a severe visual and hearing impairment. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, and won two awards, Best Actress for Anne Bancroft and Best Supporting Actress for Patty Duke. Who was the famous individual with a severe visual and hearing impairment (that Anne Sullivan tutored) that the movie “The Miracle Worker” was based on?

Answer: HELEN KELLER

This week's trivia question:

Recent research from the UC Davis MIND Institute and the Baby Siblings Research Consortium found that siblings of children with autism have a significantly higher chance of being diagnosed with autism compared to the general population. The study, published in Pediatrics, determined that about 20% of later-born siblings in families with a child with autism are diagnosed with autism themselves, a rate roughly how many times higher than that of children without siblings with autism?
