By Melissa Beck Wells, EdD, BCASE, BCISE

Director of Teaching, Learning and Faculty Development, State of New York, Empire State University

This issue of NASET’s Practical Teacher was written by Melissa Beck Wells, EdD, BCASE, BCISE. The transition from high school to college presents unique challenges for students with disabilities due to the differences in support services between PK-12 and post-secondary education. This article explores how educators can support these students by incorporating self-advocacy skills into transition planning. This paper outlines strategies for empowering students to advocate for themselves, ensuring they receive the accommodations necessary for academic success.

Trivia Question of the Week

Congratulations to

Autumn Matthews, Pamela Earwood, Rebekah Budziszews, Ellen Kay, Karen Frantz-Fry, Olga Stavro, BetsyMandel, Jane Tilleman, Debbie Alford, Patsy Ray, Madielyn Batallones, Katrina Snider, and Lauro Esquliona III who all knew the answer to last week's trivia question:

Recently, this children’s restaurant/entertainment pizza chain has expanded its ongoing partnership with the American Society of Deaf Children (ASDC), the oldest national organization governed by parents of deaf children. The partners have produced a new “Sign-Along” video series in American Sign Language (ASL). Now deaf or hard of hearing children can enjoy this chain’s animated characters’ content just for them in their own home. The new videos will launch throughout September in honor of National Deaf Awareness Month on this chain’s YouTube channel, which has nearly 500K subscribers. Additionally, throughout September, this restaurant’s locations nationwide will encourage customers to round up their change on their bill, benefiting the ASDC. What is the name of this restaurant/children’s entertainment pizza chain?

Answer: CHUCK E. CHEESE

This week's trivia question:

According to a new survey by the National Center for Education Statistics called the “School Pulse Panel”, many public school students were behind their grade level at the end of the school year in June. The findings demonstrate how grade school students are still grappling with pandemic-era learning disruptions. Based on the finding of the School Pulse Panel’s research, what percentage of Kindergarten through 12th grade students in the U.S. are performing behind their grade level?

If you know the answer to this week's trivia questions, email it to us at contactus@naset.org by September 24, 2024. If you are correct, you will be acknowledged in next week's NASET's Week in Review
