Meeting the Need: Spotlight Series on the Maverick Food Pantry

UNMC and UNO are teaming up to promote the Maverick Food Pantry (MFP), a service available to all students. This 7-week awareness campaign will conclude with a campus collection drive and pop-up food pantry at UNMC.

Who experiences food insecurity?
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations created the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES), an experience-based measure of household or individual food security (FAO Statistics, 2018). The survey focuses on self-reported food-related behaviors and experiences associated with increasing difficulties in accessing food due to resource constraints and is as follows:

During the last 12 months, was there a time when, because of lack of money or other resources:

1. You were worried you would not have enough food to eat?
2. You were unable to eat healthy and nutritious food?
3. You ate only a few kinds of foods?
4. You had to skip a meal?
5. You ate less than you thought you should?
6. Your household ran out of food?
7. You were hungry but did not eat?
8. You went without eating for a whole day?

Food insecurity looks different for everyone. No matter where you land on the scale, the Maverick Food Pantry serves those experiencing any level of food insecurity. No need is too big or too small for us to help with!

Food Pantry Knowledge at UNMC

The Division of Student Success would like to capture the awareness and usage of the Maverick Food Pantry by students across the Omaha campus. This is an anonymous survey; emails will not be collected.

By drawing on exemplars of stigmatized issues such as mental illness, obesity, and HIV/AIDS, the class will introduce students to a conceptual and empirical examination of stigma, mediated representations of stigmatized disorders in the United States and globally, the effects of such mediated representations on audiences, and strategies to design communication messages that reduce stigma.

All UNMC Students, Faculty, and Staff must take action to prevent access restrictions to commonly used applications such as Firefly (SAP), NESIS (My Records, PeopleSoft), eShop, EMS Room Scheduling, Concur, Sunapsis and Bridge.
