This and That for the Week...Important Information Follows
From the Treasurer:
Hurricane Ian has caused widespread destruction in our community. Many families have suffered significant financial hardship in dealing with the cleanup and restoration of their homes. Members of our congregation have already responded with monetary donations to help provide support for these families. Other donations have been made to fund the restoration of our Church buildings and we have also received funds to answer the Synod’s appeal for money.
The Treasurer’s office makes every effort to properly allocate your donations. When you donate to support the Synod appeal please note: “Synod - Hurricane Ian,” to support local families in need please note: “Local Families - Hurricane Ian” and to help restore our church buildings note: “Restore our Church.”
Thank you to those who have already given and to future donors.

Muscle strain is a common cause of back pain. Like from raking up and lifting debris, using a chain saw, etc. A good way to prevent that pain is to keep those muscles in good working order.
Exercise is the most effective way to improve strength, mobility, and tissue resilience. Here are some ways to protect your back:
- STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE with exercises to tone muscles surrounding the back to better support the spine and reduce lower back pressure.
- STRETCH DAILY to promote spinal health and relieve tight muscles that can lead to back pain. Mimic your cat or dog who ALWAYS stretch when waking up!
- WALK regularly as a safe form of exercise for all fitness levels. (Even mine whose level is basement – which means I don’t do any!)
- SLEEP on a quality mattress and place a pillow under your knees to reduce spinal pressure when sleeping on your back, and between the knees for side sleeping.
- MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT to reduce back strain and keep the spine from possibly developing an unnatural curvature. So here’s the old healthy eating and exercise routine…the answer to every problem!
- SIT PROPERLY so incorrect posture doesn’t put extra pressure on the discs or lower spine.
- LIFT CORRECTLY with your legs to prevent muscle spasm, pain, or even serious back injuries.
Nearly 65 million Americans have reported a recent case of back pain (hurricane survivors?) and about 16 million - 8% of all adults- have chronic back pain! Don’t forget about intermittent ice packs, rest, and pain relievers! Ah-h-h.

Welcome our new Staff Member
Please extend a warm Emmanuel welcome to John Favere, our new custodian. John joined the staff at Emmanuel just in time for Hurricane Ian.
John lives in North Port with his wife of 20 years, Dena. They moved to Florida from Pennsylvania in 2012. He and his family run a family business that was started in 1962.
John likes to kayak, go antiquing and just be in the outdoors.

Stewardship and Outreach Emphasis
Each year volunteers donate nearly 14,000 hours of their time to Venice Area Mobile Meals, Inc. By giving 2 hours per week, the drivers alone total over 8,700 hours of meal delivery. Office managers provide almost 2,000 hours of in-office coordination. Additional volunteers provide over 200 hours of data entry service. Transportation and route directors, financial management, public relations, information management and Board of Directors provide over 3,000 hours. Every little bit adds up! These individuals all feel a strong calling to help in any way they can. Many other area residents, groups, and organizations donate their time or financial resources to enable Venice Area Mobile Meals, Inc. to provide meal service to those in need.
