This past week we celebrated the feast day of St. John Paul II, likely the pope during the childhood of most people reading this. In 1987, Pope John Paul II came to Los Angeles and held an event for the youth. Each Catholic school was allowed to select 4 students to attend this event with the Pope. I was blessed to have been selected to attend as the sophomore representative for St. Anthony High School.

Pope John Paul II was the most traveled Pope in history. Certainly not without controversy during his papacy, John Paul did all he could to connect to the “regular” people. I think that is why he was so beloved by the youth. He brought enthusiasm and spirit to our faith.

Much of that day in 1987 was a blur, but I do remember 2 very distinct moments. First, the Pope called us as young people to “Be not afraid” and to embrace Christ in our lives, and to bring Christ to others. He challenged us to find joy in relationships and not material possessions, to always keep Christ in the center of our lives, and to embrace our enthusiasm and energy to be witness to the love of Christ within ourselves and FOR others.

The second moment of the day that was transformational was when a young musician, born without arms, played guitar with his feet and sang to the Pope. Needless to say, the thousands of teenagers in attendance alongside me were inspired and overwhelmed with emotion, especially when the Pope jumped off the stage to embrace the singer. You can check out the video of that song played for the Pope HERE. I was sitting in that audience and I will never forget that moment.

At the morning’s assembly I reminded our students that they too are empowered to keep Christ in the center of their lives, and to be living witnesses to goodness through their actions. I told them to know that this world and our faith is not just for the “adults” but also for young people. And, like Pope John Paul told me many years ago “use your energy and enthusiasm to bring Christ’s love to the world.”
